Chapter 9 - Chapter 8 : Paranoia

At the quietest, darkest time of the night, only those white eyes show light. However, that light is not welcoming nor friendly, it's dreadful, terrifying and dangerous.

And only the thin glass of the window seperates that creature and Hayel.

It seems like time has stopped, and nothing else matters in this moment. Only Hayel's fast heartbeat can be heard in his ears. Only his fear can be felt.

There is nowhere to run to, the creature can surely come in and if Hayel goes outside, the creature is still there. It knows where he lives and it can come inside the village with no problem whatsoever. It's no wonder though, they do not have powerful guards here because they are all inside the city.

Well, why would they protect the uneducated villagers more than their own perfect people?

The night is somber, the street is still. No moon, no stars, only darkness envelops everything in this moment.

The wind doesn't blow, the leaves don't rustle.

Only a terrifying dark, tall silhouette can be slightly seen in the dark, bending over like looming death, it's head turned towards a window of an old wooden small house.

Everyone is sleeping but only one soul is wide awake.

Hayel slowly takes a one step back, the feeling of nausea overwhelms his fear. His head spins and it seems like time does not flow. The creature doesn't move even a bit, It's still like the street it's in.

And it just stares at him, doing absolutely nothing like it's waiting for him to run, to do something. However, Hayel is scared stiff, he feels on the verge of passing out so how could he do anything?

And in that moment, everything goes black.

Inside a spacious room, candels on a beautiful chandelier flicker. A gorgeous vase sits on a table, with blue flowers inside it. The curtains are long and heavy, slightly parted so the light can come in once morning comes.

A tall, well-dressed person sitting on a luxurious couch suddenly stops reading.

The air starts feeling heavy, and the person slowly looks towards a window.

The person squints slighty, and his eyebrows furrow.

Perhaps there is a weird energy in that direction, one that is not felt often.

Maybe even never before.

How does if feel to be dead? Is it peacful or painful?

Because if it's peaceful, Hayel is surely not dead.

A familiar pain can be felt again, and of course, it's his eyes. They burn.

In fact, his whole body actually hurts. It feels like his bones hurt, his head feels like it's going to split open and his eyes feel like they have been dug out.

'No way!'

Through pain Hayel slaps his face accidentally and starts feeling his face to make sure his eyes are still here.

They are still here, he was just paranoid.

'That's another good thing at least, if we count that I'm not actually dead.'

But alas, maybe it would have been better to be dead. The pain is seriously excruciating to the point it's hard to even think straight.

So Hayel gives up and just layes there on the cold floor, waiting for the pain to settle.

Time passes and the pain doesn't completely go away but at least it does get a bit better. He doesn't feel very greatful that he is alive anymore, however it's still better than being dead.

Everything up until this point has been too much for him. Hayel is extremely afraid of death and these events just made him more and more fearful.

He feels vulnerable and the fact that he has not yet died doesn't mean he won't.

That creature just chose not to do it yet, as if it's toying with him, trying to break him.

Sadly for Hayel, it's working.

It's working so well in fact, to the point where Hayel's heart stops at every little sound.

The birds chirping, the wind that picks up from time to time, the faraway sound of people on the street, everything, just everything.

Nothing comforts him, being inside the house is dangerous, being outside the house is even worse.

It knows where he lives, it can come whenever and however it likes. Not to mention that other little creature that is here every so often to give him a good scare.

No one can help him, especially not after the death of that girl. That little creature is the one that brought him her head. What if something like that happens again while he is being watched by The Order? Surely they will kill him to calm down the people, and then investigate things in secret.

And oh well, if people figure out that he was not responsible for it, it's not like enough people will do something about the fact that he was wrongfully killed.

Even though people know that The Order is cruel and does things like that, no one would be alive without them.

Because they are the ones fighting most of the monsters.

Hayel is aware that he is blind again, which also makes matters worse. Will his sight even come back this time? He is not sure.

With gritted teeth, he slowly sits up. His body feels stiff and uncomfortable. Pain comes and goes from time to time but it's not too bad, however the pain in his eyes has yet to settle even a bit.

He is still in his bedroom, everything is in place as if nothing has happened.

And it seems he hit his back on the edge of the bed when he passed out. The pain there is a lot worse compared to other parts of his body except his eyes.

But something is wrong.

Not with the house or anything around him. His body feels different.

'It's as if like there is something missing…Something is missing definitely… What is it?'

Hayel cannot think clearly, paranoia is something that just doesn't leave him it seems.

He barely pushes himself onto the bed, he feels extremely weak, like his body will give out the moment he stands up.

He layes down on the bed on his side, his arms close to his chest.

And after some time, he feels something.

More precisely, he realizes he doesn't feel something crucial every human should have.

A heartbeat.

Like he has been poured with cold water, he instantly opens his eyes like he can see, which he cannot.

He starts frantically feeling his chest, his neck and his wrists for a sign of a heartbeat.

'Please… please no…'

But nothing.

Nothing can be felt except loneliness and fear.
