Dear Diary,
Today was a good day. During lunch break, I sat down with Maya. Two girls walked over, apparently two of Maya's friends. She introduced me to Lily and Sophie, two friendly girls. Apparently, the three of them worked together on a project last year and became friends from there. As the four of us sat there together, it felt like this was exactly what I was there for; for a moment, it felt like everything was right.
Maya also gets along surprisingly quickly with our class, despite being sick at home for the first few days. She's kind and very understanding of others. We had a nice chat at lunch and walked to biology class together. Just then, there was a brief moment of chaos in the hallway. I was stuck, wedged between a group of children and the wall. For a brief moment, my fear returned. Fortunately, the hallway quickly emptied, and we were able to continue to go to class. When a boy walked by, made eye contact with me, and smiled briefly. I wanted to smile back, but reflexively looked away. Maya later mentioned that the boy's name was Jake, apparently an old classmate of hers.
During biology class, we have a lab. I quickly notice I'm still a bit shaky from the commotion in the hallway, and Ms. Chen notices it too. She calmly asked me if everything was okay, but I quickly and curtly replied that I was fine. I could see in her eyes that she didn't believe me, but I couldn't help it. It was just a moment, right? I just need a little more time. Just a little longer and I'll feel completely at home here.
When I get home, my dad is in the kitchen. He's making my favorite meal; I can smell it the moment I walk in. During dinner, he asks a lot of questions, trying to start a conversation. But it's too much for me; my head is full, I answer curtly, and after dinner I go upstairs.
