Maya was heading to class the next morning when Agent Torres intercepted her outside the academic building.
"Change of plans. Dean Thorne needs you in her office. Now."
"What happened?"
"You'll see."
That doesn't sound good.
Dean Thorne's office was crowded when Maya arrived. The dean sat behind her desk looking exhausted. Agent Chen stood by the window. Coach Santos leaned against the wall. And a woman Maya didn't recognize sat in one of the chairs, tablet in hand.
"Maya, sit." Dean Thorne gestured to the empty chair. "This is Rebecca Martinez from our PR department. She has some news."
The PR woman smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. "We have a situation. The local news picked up your story."
Maya's stomach dropped. "What?"
"Channel 7 ran a piece this morning. 'Witness Protection Student Plays Boys' Soccer.' It's already getting traction online." Rebecca pulled up her tablet, showed Maya a video.
