The girls' dorm felt wrong.
Maya stood outside South Hall with her duffel bag and a box of belongings, staring up at the Mediterranean-style building. Agent Torres waited beside her, along with two campus security guards who'd helped move her things.
This is supposed to be safer. More appropriate. The right thing to do.
So why did it feel like another loss?
"Ready?" Torres asked.
Maya nodded, even though she wasn't.
The lobby was busy with afternoon traffic. Girls coming back from classes, heading to activities, just hanging out. Conversations died as Maya walked in. Every head turned. Stares followed her across the room to the elevators.
They all know. Of course they know. The whole school knows.
A group of cheerleaders whispered near the mailboxes. Maya caught Madison's name in the murmur. Brittany's high-pitched giggle. They weren't even trying to be subtle.
