....
They finally burst out from Laboon blowhole. Everyone gasped for air, they were drenched and dizzy.
"W-we're out!" shouted Usopp, clinging to the mast.
"Man, that was wild," said Sanji, shaking water from his hair.
But their relief didn't last long.
"Oi! Look!" yelled Nami, pointing toward the Red Line ahead.
There, Laboon was swimming full speed toward the massive red wall. He was about to slam his head into it again.
"Is he crazy?! He's gonna kill himself!" cried Zoro.
Before anyone could react, Crocus's voice boomed from the cliffs.
"Laboon! Stop it!"
The old man stood high above the sea, waving his hands and shouting with all his might.
"That's enough, Laboon! They're not coming back that way!"
The giant whale let out a mournful, echoing call. He slowed down but still trembled with frustration. A few seconds later, he slammed his head into the Red Line again.
The Straw Hats anchored the Merry and looked up at Crocus as he sighed heavily.
"Why's he doing that, old man?" asked Luffy, wiping his hat.
Crocus's expression softened as he looked at the whale.
"Laboon's been waiting for a crew. Decades ago, a group of pirates from the West Blue came through Reverse Mountain. They made a promise to this whale that they'd return after sailing the Grand Line. But they never did."
"So he's been… ramming his head against the Red Line all this time?" said Sanji quietly.
Crocus nodded. "He refuses to believe they're gone. That's why he waits here, trying to break through, hoping to meet them again."
Nojiko clenched her fists, her jaw tightening. "That's stupid."
"I'll knock some sense into him," said Luffy.
Everyone turned to him in surprise.
"Luffy!" Nami snapped. "Don't say that—"
But Luffy had already grabbed the broken ship mast.
"What are you doing, idiot?!" yelled Usopp.
Without answering, Luffy leapt onto Laboon's head and impaled the mast right into the whale's forehead.
"LUFFY!" screamed Nami.
Laboon roared in confusion, thrashing around as Luffy stood there, face-to-face with the massive creature. The whale felt pain where Luffy had struck him and grew angry, slamming his tail toward the boy.
Everyone saw it but didn't move. Even Dragon just watched his son, wondering what he was trying to do.
Luffy was thrown against the wall, but thanks to his rubber body, he didn't feel pain. He bounced back, activated his vibranium suit, and punched Laboon again.
The whale groaned, stunned by the impact, then paused as Luffy shouted,
"Listen up, you big Laboon! You've got a new promise now, with me!"
Laboon blinked, his one massive eye staring at the small boy standing on his head.
"You wanna fight, right?! Then let's fight!"
Luffy grinned and threw another punch at Laboon's forehead. The whale flinched not from pain, but surprise then let out a deep, challenging roar and fight back Luffy with his head.
They went back and forth punch, headbutt, bump until both stopped, panting.
Luffy raised his fist high.
"That's enough for now! The next fight's gonna be when I come back from the Grand Line! So you better be ready, Laboon!"
Laboon's huge eye blinked again, then softened. He let out a long, emotional cry that echoed through the sea like thunder.
Luffy hopped down, laughing, and asked Usopp for a paintbrush and some paint.
Everyone just stared as Luffy climbed back up Laboon's side and started painting on the whale's black head.
"Oi, oi! What're you doing now?!" asked Zoro.
Luffy laughed. "A mark of promise!"
When he was done, there was a crude but proud drawing of the Straw Hat Jolly Roger, wide grin, big hat, and all.
Luffy patted the whale's head.
"There! That's us! Make sure this doesn't peel off, got it? Until we fight again, don't hit the wall anymore. Just wait here for me!"
Laboon let out a soft, rumbling sound, and for the first time, he smiled.
Everyone watched silently as the massive whale stopped ramming the Red Line and floated peacefully near the surface, humming a low, happy tune.
"That idiot…" muttered Zoro, smirking. "He really made a deal with a whale."
"Shishishishishi! He's our captain, alright," said Bartolomeo proudly, eyes sparkling.
Dragon watched quietly, a small but proud smile tugging at his lips.
My son is quite amazing… he made a promise with a whale.
Nami frowned, tapping the glass dome of her compass. "Huh? That's weird… the needle's spinning in circles. It's not pointing anywhere!"
Usopp leaned over her shoulder. "Eh? Don't tell me it's broken already! I knew we shouldn't have let Luffy play with it!"
"I didn't touch it!" Luffy said defensively.
Jack, leaning casually against the railing, made a stupid joke. "It's not broken. It's just… confused."
"Confused?" Nami raised an eyebrow. "How can a compass be confused?"
Before Jack could answer, Crocus pointed toward the horizon.
"That's because, young lady, the Grand Line doesn't obey the same magnetic laws as the other seas."
Everyone turned to the old man.
Nami blinked. "What do you mean?"
"The magnetic fields here are… unique," explained Crocus. "Each island in the Grand Line has its own magnetic signature. That's why ordinary compasses don't work here."
"So how do we sail then?" asked Sanji.
Crocus chuckled softly. "Not quite." He glanced toward Dragon, as if asking permission.
Dragon gave a small nod. "Go ahead."
Crocus reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, transparent dome-like device strapped to a bracelet. Inside, a single metallic needle floated within a droplet of shimmering liquid.
"This," he said, handing it to Nami, "is a Log Pose. It's the only compass that works in the Grand Line."
Nami carefully examined it, eyes widening. "A Log Pose… so it memorizes magnetic fields from each island?"
Crocus nodded approvingly. "Exactly. Once it locks onto an island's magnetic signature, it'll point to the next one. You just need to wait for it to reset."
Luffy tilted his head, scratching his cheek. "So… it's like a compass that needs to take a nap before it works?"
"…In a way," Crocus said with a small smile. "Yes."
Zoro smirked. "Heh, sounds like it's got Luffy's personality."
"Oi!" Luffy yelled, frowning while the crew burst into laughter.
As Nami strapped the Log Pose around her wrist, she grinned brightly.
"Perfect! With this, I can navigate the Grand Line properly!"
