The gunshot shattered the fragile quiet of dawn.
Damian moved quickly to shield from the danger .
He shoved Isabella to the ground, his body covering hers as shards of glass rained over them.
The bullet embedded itself in the far wall with a dull, deadly thud.
"Stay down," he hissed, already reaching for his gun.

Her fingers dug into the wooden floor as Damian crawled to the edge of the broken window, peering into the gray morning.

He muttered a curse under his breath. "They found us."

"Doesn't matter," he snapped softly. "We move now."
He hauled her to her feet, pressing her close as he led her through the back of the cabin.
Every muscle in his body coiled tight, his eyes scanning every corner.
She felt his tension like a heartbeat sharp, urgent, alive.
