----------------------------------------------------------
The final preliminary round of the KOF tournament was coming to an end.
The main tournament was about to begin.
That meant it was time to leave South Town and return to Tokyo.
After all, the main venue for the KOF tournament was in Tokyo.
After some simple packing, everyone flew back the next day.
This time, besides Emiya, Cú Chulainn, Heracles, Illya, and Mai Shiranui, King and Kasumi Todoh came along as well.
For some reason, news of the New Female Fighters Team arriving in Tokyo leaked out.
So when Emiya's group entered the airport, they were met with a swarm of reporters.
More accurately-
Mai Shiranui and her team were surrounded.
As for Emiya and the others, they were complete nobodies.
No one even glanced their way.
All attention was focused on the New Female Fighters Team.
After all, they had participated in the previous two KOF tournaments.
And they were all beautiful.
Of course they drew attention.
Fortunately, this was 1996.
It was the first year KOF was broadcast worldwide.
If it were 1997, Emiya was certain the scene would be even crazier.
From this year onward, the KOF tournament would stop being niche.
It would become a true world-class fighting event.
While Mai Shiranui and the others were trapped by reporters, Emiya's group quietly slipped away.
They left behind the bewildered New Female Fighters Team.
After a short interview, the three girls finally fought their way out of the airport.
"Over here! Over here!"
Emiya had already arranged a taxi.
When the three saw him, they rushed over, jumped in, and slammed the door shut.
Emiya patted the driver's shoulder.
"Let's go."
The driver nodded and stepped on the gas.
The taxi shot forward, leaving the reporters behind.
Mai Shiranui adjusted her messy hair and glared at Emiya.
"That was cruel!"
"You just left us with the reporters and ran off!"
Emiya remained calm.
"That's not my fault."
"They were interviewing the New Female Fighters Team."
"What does that have to do with me?"
King joined in.
"Even so, shouldn't you show a little gentlemanly behavior?"
Emiya looked genuinely puzzled.
"Gentlemanly behavior?"
"Do I have that?"
King and Mai Shiranui rolled their eyes at the same time.
Even Kasumi Todoh couldn't hold back.
"That was... really mean."
Emiya laughed.
"That's not mean."
"That's called knowing yourself."
Mai Shiranui stopped listening.
She shifted in her seat.
"What about the others?"
Emiya pointed ahead.
"Relax. They're in the car in front."
Mai looked through the windshield.
She saw Heracles and Illya in the taxi ahead.
Then she snorted.
King didn't understand.
Mai pointed forward.
"Look closely at Heracles."
King did.
And immediately got it.
Heracles was too tall.
He had to bend awkwardly inside the taxi.
It looked... uncomfortable.
Mai couldn't help complaining.
"Couldn't you find a bigger car?"
Emiya shrugged.
"All the cars near the airport were like this."
"Nothing I could do."
"Someone had to suffer."
Soon, they arrived at the Shiranui Dojo.
As soon as Heracles got out, he stretched his limbs.
Illya smiled.
"That must've been rough, Berserker."
Heracles shook his head.
It was nothing.
Emiya then arranged the rooms.
They would be staying at the Shiranui Dojo for the duration of the tournament.
After that, Emiya took the invitation and went to register for the main KOF tournament.
With the invitation, everything went smoothly.
The staff scheduled his team to appear at the opening ceremony two days later.
If a team failed to appear, it would be considered a forfeit.
After leaving the venue, Emiya logged into the group chat and tagged Loki and Hayato Fūrinji.
"Where are you guys?"
Loki replied immediately.
"Just landed in Tokyo."
"I want glowing dishes tonight."
"@Erina, have you mastered glowing dishes yet?"
Erina Nakiri sighed.
"Sorry."
"They're... difficult."
"I need more time."
Hayato Fūrinji replied shortly after.
"I'm at the airport. I'll be back soon."
"Good," Emiya replied.
"Come to the Shiranui Dojo first."
"Register."
"We're eating glowing dishes tonight."
"Got it!" Loki replied cheerfully.
That evening, Emiya made a special trip to Kikuka Restaurant.
He packed dozens of dishes and brought them back.
At dinnertime, everyone gathered.
Emiya's group was all wearing sunglasses.
Mai Shiranui, King, and Kasumi Todoh looked confused.
Mai frowned.
"Is this some kind of ritual?"
Emiya shook his head.
"No."
"We're just afraid of being blinded."
"Blinded?" Mai asked.
Emiya smiled and reached for the lid in front of him.
"You'll see."
He lifted it.
A pillar of light shot upward.
The entire room lit up.
Even the ceiling lights seemed dim in comparison.
The sudden brightness stabbed straight into Mai's eyes.
At the same time-
Heracles.
Cú Chulainn.
Illya.
Loki.
Riveria.
Hayato Fūrinji.
All opened their lids.
One beam after another shot up.
The room turned into a light show.
"My eyes!" Mai screamed.
"My eyes!"
"I can't see anything!" King leaned back.
Kasumi covered her eyes.
"It's... too bright!"
After a while, the light faded.
Emiya and the others removed their sunglasses.
The aroma of food filled the room.
Everyone started swallowing unconsciously.
Mai took several minutes to recover.
She opened her eyes sluggishly.
Stars still swam in her vision.
Who am I?
Where am I?
Why does everything sparkle?
"Now you get why we wore sunglasses," Emiya said teasingly.
Mai finally snapped back.
"What... what was that?"
"Simple," Emiya said.
"We're eating glowing dishes tonight."
"Glowing dishes?"
"That's right."
King wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Why have I never heard of food that glows?"
"You've seen it now," Emiya replied calmly.
"So?"
"Impressive, right?"
Mai immediately understood.
These weren't dishes from this world.
The fact that food could glow at all was absurd.
Kasumi complained quietly.
"You should've warned us more clearly."
"My eyes still hurt."
"How didn't I?" Emiya replied.
"We wore sunglasses."
"And we said you might be blinded."
"With warnings that obvious, didn't you feel even a little cautious?"
Mai rolled her eyes.
"Who would expect food to glow?"
King and Kasumi nodded furiously.
This was completely unscientific.
King frowned.
"Did you put fluorescent agents in it?"
Loki laughed loudly.
"Relax."
"There's nothing artificial."
"These dishes are full of heart."
"And they're better than anything you've eaten before."
"I'm done waiting."
She picked up her chopsticks and went straight for the Magical Mapo Tofu.
Emiya followed immediately.
Dinner turned into a battlefield.
Mai took a bite of fried chicken.
Her eyes lit up.
"This is amazing!"
King reached for the tofu-
Then paused.
She switched targets.
A chicken leg.
Swoosh.
Loki's chopsticks cut in and stole it.
"Sorry."
"First come, first served."
King smiled.
She reached for another.
Swoosh.
Mai snatched it first.
"Sorry, King."
"First come, first served."
A vein popped on King's forehead.
She stared at Mai.
When Mai reached for braised pork-
King's chopsticks intercepted it.
"Sorry, Mai."
"First come, first served."
Mai glared.
"You're really going to fight me over one piece of pork?"
"I'm just learning from you," King replied calmly.
