Chapter 283 - Chapter 21: Gravity, Denied Once More

Hector slumped in his chair.

He didn't know what this "bacteria" would turn him into.

But one thing was certain.

This strain-one that granted powers-had never been recorded before.

Which meant research.

Testing.

Time.

Time he didn't have.

And yet...

For some reason, he was enjoying it.

The strength.

The fear in others' eyes.

The way they finally looked at him.

"I'll make them fear me," Hector muttered. "I'll make them respect me."

"No one will ever comment on my looks again."

"Why am I so... strong?" Clark asked excitedly as he put on the suit inside the ship.

He'd always wanted something like Batman's.

Morin had stopped him back then.

Now he understood why.

This suit was better.

Form-fitting. Muscle-enhancing. A cape.

A real hero's suit.

He tugged at it, trying to tear the fabric.

It didn't budge.

Satisfied.

"Earth's sun is yellow," Jor-El explained. "Younger and more powerful than Krypton's. Earth's gravity is lighter. Its atmosphere thinner. The radiation is stronger."

"Your cells absorb that radiation," he continued. "It strengthens your muscles and skin. Grants you these abilities."

"I can't calculate your upper limit," Jor-El admitted. "But don't remain in a vacuum for too long. Your cells have a threshold. Excessive exposure may cause mutations."

"I understand," Clark nodded. "I can feel it when I stay in the sun too long."

"Honestly," Morin added, "your race going extinct feels staged."

"With powers like this, you could've been gods among the stars. But you wiped yourselves out over 'population control'?"

"Doesn't that sound suspicious?"

"Your suspicion is reasonable," Jor-El said calmly. "But even if it was a conspiracy, it succeeded."

"My priority is Kal's safety."

"And preserving our legacy."

"That's his way of telling you to get a wife," Morin said to Clark.

"Huh?" Clark blinked. "I can have kids with humans?"

"Why do you think I sent you to Earth?" Jor-El smiled. "Of course you can."

"Then..." Clark straightened. "I'll try my best."

"But first," Jor-El said, "you must master your power."

"Zod will arrive soon."

"You need strength-enough that your voice cannot be ignored."

"And as your father," he added quietly, "I hope you don't give up the Codex. That would only repeat history."

"And end humanity."

"I get it," Clark said seriously.

"I can help train him," Morin said. "By the way... you still haven't figured out how to fly, have you?"

"...No," Clark admitted. "If I go too fast, my clothes get destroyed."

He remembered.

Years ago, Morin had tricked him into a full-power jump.

His clothes disintegrated midair.

Leaving him naked.

Morin had taken photos.

Many photos.

Morin possessed an entire archive of Clark's dark history.

Terrifying.

Clark had learned an important rule early in life.

Never provoke Morin.

"Well, this suit won't break," Morin said casually. "It can probably tank a nuke."

"Good..." Clark replied stiffly.

He wanted those photos gone.

But he also knew he couldn't win.

"Let's go," Morin said. "I want to see how you fly."

Morin invited Jor-El to watch via tablet.

Jor-El declined.

Satellites were better.

They stepped out onto the ice.

"So," Morin asked, "how do you think you fly?"

"Jumping...?" Clark guessed.

"My method's different," Morin said, stepping back. "You should find your own."

Clark took a deep breath.

Crouched.

And jumped.

The ice exploded beneath him.

He shot hundreds of meters into the air-

Then fell.

Newton rested peacefully in his coffin.

Boom.

Clark cratered the ice.

Jumped again.

Higher.

Again.

By the fourth jump, he found it.

The balance point.

Midair, he pushed-

And took off.

Newton: "???"

Before Newton could rise from the grave, Morin shoved him back down.

"Bio-magnetism. Electromagnetism..." Morin muttered as he flew after Clark, recording everything.

This wasn't just dark history.

These were memories.

Morin could sense it.

A powerful field around Clark.

He wasn't pushing against air.

He was interacting with Earth's magnetic field.

It obeyed physics.

Newton stayed buried.

As for speed-

Clark's field was incredible.

Almost half as strong as Morin's.

No wonder he could keep up with a young Flash.

Barry was only twelve or thirteen now.

Morin hadn't touched that timeline.

Messing with the Flash always ended in universal collapse.

"Hahaha!" Clark spread his arms, exhilarated.

"That pose," Morin's voice echoed in his head. "Are you copying Ultraman?"

"What?" Clark blinked.

His focus broke.

The field destabilized.

And he dropped.

"Aaaaaah-!"

"Don't panic," Morin said calmly. "Control it. Don't rely on instinct-"

He didn't help.

He kept filming.

The title was already decided.

SHOCKING: SUPERMAN'S FIRST FLIGHT ENDS IN TOTAL FAILURE

Clark smashed through a mountain.

Then the ground.

A massive crater formed.

"I think I've got it!" Clark said, climbing out unhurt.

"The stronger your body," Morin said, "the easier it is to control your energy."

He spoke from experience.

Cellular control was everything.

Shaving.

Precision.

Other activities.

Being strong didn't mean being clumsy.

Clark nodded.

Focused.

The ground cracked.

Rocks floated.

He shot skyward.

"If I were a traffic cop," Morin said, "I'd fine you into bankruptcy."

They flew into space.

Vacuum didn't matter.

They sustained themselves on energy.

"I feel... amazing!" Clark laughed.

"You're sun-charging," Morin noted.

Must be nice.

Morin made a mental note to send some photos to Lois later.

Clark shivered.

...Why do I suddenly feel like I'm in danger?
