Chapter 154 - Chapter 8: Names That Sound Familiar

"I still can't believe it," Song Shu said, shaking his head. "I thought you'd need more time. And instead... fifty-something tests in half an hour?"

"The number of questions wasn't that high," Morin said calmly. "Some had one or two. The most had fewer than ten."

"And they weren't difficult. Pretty simple."

"Simple?" Song Shu rolled his eyes. He was already used to Morin's way of talking. "You're lying."

"They were simple for me," Morin replied.

"So that promise you made," Song Shu pressed, "about bringing me with you. Was that serious?"

"What if you really passed-"

"There's no 'what if,'" Morin said, pointing out the window. "It's certain."

"What?" Song Shu turned, confused.

He looked outside. Nothing.

"They're here," Morin said, raising an eyebrow.

"They're impatient."

Have you ever sat in a classroom during a scorching summer afternoon, cicadas screaming outside, half-asleep while the teacher droned on?

Or been at work, listening to your boss praise the 'blessings' of 996 while piling more tasks on your desk?

Did you ever imagine a sharply dressed elite with gold-rimmed glasses suddenly barging in, speaking fluent English into a satellite phone, saying, "Sorry to interrupt, but if this gentleman doesn't come with us, Japan will sink into the sea"?

...Thinking about it, maybe it wouldn't be so bad if he didn't go.

Morin was in a similar situation.

Except instead of one elite-

There were several armed helicopters.

He wasn't who he used to be. He didn't need that kind of exaggerated entrance.

But as the saying went, a man is a boy until the day he dies.

What's wrong with being a little dramatic once in a while?

When Morin saw armed helicopters descend and fully equipped soldiers rappel down, he still felt a trace of pride.

I'm a big deal.

Anyone who gets this treatment-whether being invited or arrested-counts as one.

Beside him, Song Shu stared, eyes wide and mouth open.

It took him a long time to recover.

"They're... here for you?" Song Shu swallowed.

"Helicopters? What did you do? Did you cheat on the test? I told you to be subtle-ow!"

"Think before you talk," Morin said, flicking his head. "Do I look like someone who breaks the law?"

"I like exploiting loopholes-no, I mean, I like being law-abiding."

He hadn't used much force. Otherwise, Song Shu wouldn't just be rubbing his head with watery eyes.

You definitely meant 'loopholes,' didn't you?

Outside, the helicopters drew everyone's attention.

The PPDC China Division's Tianjin Branch had a helipad, but it was rarely used. Most people had never seen a helicopter here, much less armed ones with soldiers rappelling down.

Phones came out immediately.

A Major General disembarked and shook hands with Shen Guomin, head of the Tianjin Branch.

"Any instructions?" Shen Guomin asked after the exchange.

He knew nothing. Only that this was confidential.

"I can't say," the Major General replied. "You'll know soon. I'm here to pick someone up."

"Pick someone up?"

"Someone very important."

Shen Guomin was stunned.

Someone like that... in his branch?

They moved toward the Mecha Designer Liaison Department. With every step, Shen Guomin grew more uneasy.

There was only one person left there.

A reserve mecha pilot, sidelined due to medical issues.

Important enough for this?

Even if his health recovered, this was excessive.

Helicopters... for one person?

Shen Guomin muttered internally as they walked.

"They're coming for you," Song Shu said quietly.

At first, he was shocked. Then it felt natural.

A genius who finished all those tests in half an hour-possibly perfectly-of course they'd rush over.

He was already imagining his future mecha.

A knock snapped him back.

Song Shu opened the door to see Shen Guomin and the Major General, flanked by armed soldiers.

His heart tightened. He stepped aside.

"Director! Commander!" he saluted.

The Major General returned the salute and walked in, his eyes locking onto Morin.

"This is faster and bigger than I expected," Morin said.

No airs. No posture.

Even if this wasn't the same China he knew, the name still carried weight for him.

That was why he'd come here first.

As for his old jobs...

He had no choice.

He couldn't exactly collect taxes as an IRS agent in China.

"For someone with your ability," the Major General said, smiling and extending his hand, "we don't skimp on treatment."

"I'm Ye Fan. Major General, PPDC China Division Armed Forces."

Morin nearly choked.

He kept his composure, but still glanced at Song Shu.

See? If you'd had a protagonist name like that earlier, I would've figured it out faster.

"You don't happen to know someone named Lin Yi, do you?" Morin asked casually.

"...Huh?" Ye Fan froze. "Lin Yi is a friend. Southeast Military Region. Do you know him?"

So he really exists.

Ye Fan. Lin Yi.

Thank goodness this wasn't an urban fantasy novel. Otherwise, the monsters would've been wiped out already.

Morin just smiled. "No. I just remembered something. I'm Morin."

"I see." Ye Fan nodded, storing the information away, then moved on.

"Blah blah blah..."

"That's the situation. We'll escort you to the military airport, then proceed to headquarters," Ye Fan said. "Maximum security. Best treatment. Any requests, just say so."

"That sounds a little odd," Morin said lightly. "Since you mentioned requests... can I bring someone?"

"Who?"

"Him. Song Shu."

Song Shu straightened instinctively.

"He used to be a reserve mecha pilot," Morin continued. "His body's recovered. He kept training. With some adjustment, he should qualify."

Ye Fan's expression sharpened.

A qualified mecha pilot was extremely rare.

Even if Song Shu failed later, Ye Fan couldn't refuse.

He had just promised.

And Morin's reasoning was airtight.

One extra person wasn't an issue.

"If that's the case, it's our oversight," Ye Fan said after a pause. "Your request is reasonable. He can come."

He turned to Shen Guomin. "The transfer documents will follow."

"Yes-of course," Shen Guomin replied, still confused.

All he knew was this:

The higher-ups weren't here for Song Shu.

They were here for Morin.

And Morin wanted to take Song Shu with him.

So who exactly was Morin?

Why was he here?

And what had he done?

Also-Song Shu was the only one handling all mecha designer liaison work.

If he left, what then?

Form a whole new department?

Shen Guomin's mind raced.

But he didn't dare stop them.

Someone Ye Fan treated with this much respect-

Offending him would only bring trouble.
