Draconis wasn't the only one curious—Rias and the rest were leaning forward, eyes fixed on the shimmering forest lake. None of them had ever seen a water spirit up close, and anticipation hung thick in the air.
As the group approached, the calm surface began to ripple, gentle waves spreading outward. Zatouji perked up, voice hushed with excitement.
"Undine's about to show herself!"
A glow bloomed at the lake's center. Slowly, a figure rose from the water, hovering above the surface. She faced away from them, golden hair cascading down her back. From behind, she looked… promising?
That illusion shattered the moment she turned around.
"HUAAAH!!" she roared.
Draconis felt like he'd been struck by lightning. His heart skipped a beat—what in the world was this creature?
Undine was all bulging muscle and hard angles, her face carved from gristle. Forget fair skin and delicate beauty—she looked like she could punch a hole through a mountain. Draconis didn't doubt she could take down a bull with one swing.
"That's Undine! You're lucky, kid—she's a rare-type Familiar!" Zatouji announced.
Draconis didn't even blink. "No, thanks. I'll have to pass."
"Eh? You don't want her?"
"What happened to the legendary fair-skinned, long-legged elf maidens? I'm sorry, but I just can't."
He felt existential despair. Where were all those people who swore elves were the pinnacle of beauty? Show yourselves—I promise I won't bring out the Regalia Blade.
"She's a combat spirit with powerful healing abilities!" Zatouji insisted. "Her skills are top-notch!"
"I'm afraid her looks would finish me off before she ever got a chance to heal me."
Draconis deadpanned, "At this point, words fail. This is the kind of beauty that empties the mountains of birds and the roads of travelers."
The others stared, baffled.
You could describe ugliness like that?
Just how tragic did it have to be…
Rias couldn't help but laugh. "So you're just like most guys after all, Draconis. I was starting to wonder."
Akeno and the others chuckled, surprised to see Draconis so rattled. He really wasn't about to accept this Familiar.
He slumped. "Men's brains love women's hearts, but their eyes love appearances. I always thought I wasn't shallow, but today I learned otherwise. Sorry, everyone."
A silent sigh. Guess his enlightenment still had a way to go.
With the Undine debacle behind them, the group continued their search. An hour passed, and besides the muscle-bound water spirit, they encountered all sorts of creatures—shadow bats, burrowing worms, wind birds. All perfectly ordinary Familiars, nothing that caught Draconis or Asia's eye.
Luckily, Zatouji was patient. Even if they didn't catch anything tonight, he'd be back next full moon to help.
Suddenly, Zatouji stopped, scanning the treetops. He motioned for silence, pointing upward.
There, perched high in the branches, was a tiny blue dragon, scales glimmering.
Asia gasped, starry-eyed. "Oh wow! It's so cute!"
Zatouji's eyes widened. "Azure Tempest Dragon! A lightning-wielding baby dragon—rare as they come."
Rias and the others were stunned. "We've never seen one before!"
Draconis nodded. "Zatouji-senpai, please catch it for Asia."
No way would he compete with her for a Familiar she loved, and besides, Familiars had to choose their own masters.
Zatouji nodded, moving to capture it, but the little dragon was quick—one flutter of its wings and it vanished into the trees.
"After it!" Zatouji called, sprinting ahead.
The group followed, but in this unfamiliar forest, keeping pace with the expert was impossible. Draconis finally understood why Rias had fought so hard to secure Zatouji's help—without him, catching a Familiar was nearly hopeless.
Just then, a chorus of startled cries rang out.
"Ah! What's this?" Asia squeaked.
"Ara ara, it's so sticky…" Akeno complained.
Draconis turned, blinking in confusion. Rias, Akeno, Koneko, and Asia were all dripping with green, gooey slime, which kept raining down from the trees and soaking their clothes.
Then things got wild.
Wherever the slime touched, their clothing simply vanished—eaten away, dissolved, gone. In seconds, all four girls were left completely exposed.
Draconis stared, speechless.
Well… this was unexpected.
Rias groaned, "Ugh, it's slimes… I can't summon any magic at all…"
Their outfits, woven from magical energy, had been devoured, leaving Draconis with an eyeful he hadn't bargained for.
"These are slimes? Why aren't they coming after me?" Draconis wondered aloud. He was standing right there, but the slimes ignored him entirely.
"So gross… They only go after girls' clothes…" Koneko muttered, trying to peel the slime off her bare skin.
"Draconis, help us! This stuff is disgusting…" Asia pleaded.
"Ara ara, I can't use my magic…" Akeno said, her curves on full display—enough to make Draconis look twice.
He tilted his head, taking in the scene, then grinned slyly.
"Y'know, slimes aren't so bad. Rias, maybe I'll pick one of these as my Familiar!"
"…Excuse me?"
He pointed at the slimes, beaming. "I want this one! Isn't this a great view?"
Rias and the others shouted in unison:
"Absolutely not!"
