Chapter 72 - Chapter 72 - The Cavalry

The forest spat us out onto a dirt clearing, and every muscle in my legs screamed in protest; my lungs felt like they were on fire. Each breath was a desperate struggle, a relentless fight against the suffocating darkness. Tristan's grip on my hand was vice-like, dragging me forward through the shadows, every instinct screaming to flee, and behind us, Charlie was firing his gun, each deafening shot echoing like a thunderclap, pushing the encroaching darkness back for just a moment.

Then, out of nowhere, blinding headlights pierced the gloom.

Two beams cut through the thick trees, a welcome assault after our endless plunge into the dark. The tires screamed as a black SUV skidded to a halt, its doors flinging open in a frantic invitation to escape.

For a gut-wrenching heartbeat, I froze. Who were they? Friend or foe? Another trap waiting to ensnare us in its deadly grip?

"Take cover, now!" Charlie shouted, yanking me down just as bullets whistled past, close enough for my skin to prickle in fear. The answer came crashing into the chaos with a clean, precise, and merciless return fire erupting from the SUV. The men in black moved like a well-oiled machine, pushing our attackers back into the shadows with efficiency.

"Donovan!" one of them shouted over the deafening noise.

That single name dropped into my gut like a stone, and a wave of relief crashed over me, nearly bringing me to my knees. Allies! It was them, it had to be.

Tristan yanked me back to my feet, shielding me with his body as one of the men sprinted toward us. His sharp features and clipped words left no doubt. "Your father sent us here to help you. Move, now!" he barked, urgency thrumming in his tone.

I stumbled into the SUV, my body trembling violently, blood still slick and warm on my hands. The moment I hit the seat, it felt surreal, like the chaotic storm around us had suddenly shifted to a confusing lull of safety.

But the frantic pounding of my heart reminded me it was all too real, and we were alive, even if only for now.

The world around us shrank to a blur of adrenaline, urgency, and chaos. As Charlie covered our retreat, I slipped into the vehicle just as the last of Father's men unleashed a hail of fire. The doors slammed shut, engines roared to life, and we shot down the dirty road, the shadows of our enemies receding into the darkness behind us.

Ellie was pressed against me, trembling in silence, with her knuckles stained with fresh blood. A fierce urge to wipe her wounds away surged within me and to hold her so tightly that fear would have no chance of creeping in, but I restrained myself, acutely aware of my father's men observing us with their guarded gazes.

One of them turned to me from the passenger seat, his sharp eyes darting between Ellie and me. "Mr. Donovan, Sir, your father requests an immediate update on your status."

I met his gaze, my tone even. "He'll hear it from me soon enough."

The man nodded, but I caught the flicker of recognition in his eyes. The unspoken understanding of the bond between Ellie and me, and what that meant for her.

In that moment, she was no longer just a guest in the Donovans' household. She's becoming part of the Donovan legacy, and the weight of it settled on me like a mantle, both exhilarating and heavy. Ellie needs to understand that there is no turning back for her now, as she is inextricably woven into this world, with all its complexities, for better or worse.

The SUV jolted over the uneven ground, its headlights illuminating the path ahead. I felt utterly drained, both physically and mentally, as a tempest of thoughts swirled within me. Every attempt to close my eyes brought the man's face to the forefront of my mind. The shock in his eyes, the blood, and the moment of his fall after my attack.

I yearned to curl up, let the tears flow, and scream for all those haunting images to fade away. Just then, Tristan took my hand in his, and I could feel the warmth of his grip acting as a steady anchor amidst my chaos. His fingers intertwined with mine provided a sense of strength that allowed me to breathe again, helping to quiet the storm inside me. It was as if he understood my thoughts without words, and his silence offered a comforting support that made all the difference.

I desperately wanted to believe that we had overcome this harrowing ordeal, yet as the SUV drove deeper into Donovan territory, a heavy feeling settled in my chest. I know that surviving this chaotic situation would require a significant price.
