Chapter 4 - Chapter 0005: Condensing The Shadow Core And Awakening An SSS-Grade Ability!!!

[Host: Modret Axarel]

[Status: Injured. While unborn, you were poisoned to death. Though you managed to survive, you have been crippled and are currently unable to awaken an ability.]

Modret subconsciously moved his gaze to the second line of words, and his eyes froze on it.

'I was poisoned to death while I was in the womb?' he was stunned, and a furrow surfaced on his brows.

The fairy floating beside him whispered gently.

[Based on the setting, you seem to be in a royal family. Perhaps this involves royal schemes. That or your mother accidentally consumed something harmful, but that is highly unlikely or the system information would be more direct.]

'Huh, aren't you the system?' Modret was exasperated but didn't dwell on the minor joke. What the fairy said was true nonetheless. Perhaps he had been poisoned to death while being unborn.

'And what's this about not being able to awaken an ability? Could it be that this is a world of ability awakeners?' Modret was curious but knew he would slowly learn and explore the world.

'Now, the important thing is to find who is trying to poison me and get out of immediate danger.'

'How frustrating it is to be in Abyssal Sage level difficulty. Even before I was given a chance to fight, I almost died,' Modret felt exasperated at the thought.

Turning his attention away from his thoughts, he moved his gaze down to see the remaining lines of words.

[Ability (unawakened)]

[Bloodline: ???]

[Shadow fragments: 0/1000]

[Remark: a pitiful soul cast into a terrifying world filled with schemes. The whole world abandoned you, but you are fully embraced by the shadows…]

Modret felt like touching his nose awkwardly. It seemed the system had a personality and was particularly amusing.

[Huh? Of course I have a personality,] the fairy beside him, hearing his thoughts, chimed in.

Noticing a few grey lines of words on the panel in front of him, Modret turned to the system for answers.

[Those are abilities of the system that aren't accessible yet. As your strength increases, you will be able to access them naturally.]

The fairy explained lightly.

Modret nodded internally, then drew back his attention to the line of words in front of him.

'I have an unawakened ability? Or could it be that I'm truly unable to awaken an ability? Also, what are shadow fragments, and how do I obtain them?' Modret asked curiously.

The shadow flew slightly, bringing about a drizzle of starlight before answering. However, just as her words fell, Modret's vision and attention turned blurry.

Having just been born, his little mind was exhausted and couldn't handle all the deep thinking pertaining to the soul of a thirty-year-old man.

After a few minutes of being born into this world—

…Modret finally had a peaceful sleep in both lifetimes…

Time passed freely like an undulating river, and soon a few hours had gone by.

Modret was woken up to the sound of a beautiful melody.

"Huh? Where am I?" It only took a moment for the memories of all that had happened to come crashing down in his mind.

He opened his eyes groggily to gaze upon the beautiful Anna. A stench wafted through the air, causing Modret to realize she was changing his diapers. While asleep, his bodily functions were particularly uncontrollable.

Modret stayed in silence, listening to the beautiful melody as his mother cleaned him up.

It sounded peaceful, bringing him warmth and comfort. After all that had happened so far, with the unbearable pressure, Modret felt as though this was like a warm spring breeze washing away all his worries.

A small smile surfaced on his face.

Anna chuckled, seeing the smile on her son's face. She moved her slender fingers and gently poked him on the cheek.

"Why are you smiling so sweetly like that? Your cuteness is overwhelming!" she exclaimed, poking him once more.

Being orphaned in his previous life and having not felt such affection, Modret felt warm inside.

'Having parents isn't so bad…' he was pleased at the thought.

[Finally over the reminiscing times?]

At that moment, Modret's thoughts were interrupted by the floating fairy not too far away.

Moving lightly, she approached Modret and landed on his nose. It seemed it was her favorite spot.

'Oh, right, you were about to reply to me before I slept off,' Modret recalled their previous conversation.

The fairy nodded and then began explaining.

[Just as it's written, due to your poisoning, you are crippled. Perhaps there's a way to awaken naturally; however, that is left to how much this world has gone in exploring the vast galaxies.]

A wave of despair fell over Modret. Being unable to awaken an ability… did he even have a chance of survival in this chaotic world?

Just then, the fairy, noticing his despair, said lightly, causing his eyes to widen.

[You don't have to worry about that much. That's where the system comes in…]

[After gathering 1000 shadow fragments, you can condense a shadow core and spin the awakening roulette to awaken an ability.]

Modret was puzzled. The words sounded grand, but at the same time, faintly complex. So he asked, hoping to clarify his doubts.

'By awakening, you mean an ability, right? But I still don't get what kind of awakening you're talking about.'

[Every day, you are granted tens of abilities at random. However, each of them is merely just shadow fragments. When you fully condense 1000 shadow fragments, you can spin the roulette to awaken an ability at random.]

[If your luck is good, it could be a B-grade ability—or perhaps the forbidden SSS-grade ability!]

Modret gasped, his eyes widening.

If all the system/fairy said was true, then didn't that mean he wasn't restricted to one awakening like the others but an unlimited number of awakenings?

In due time, wouldn't he amass countless abilities after spinning the roulette countless times?

Just the thought alone sent shivers down Modret's spine.

It seemed saving the gods wouldn't be as difficult as he originally thought.

However, it was still a question whether he would save them. With enough strength, rather than saving them, why not teach Noctis a lesson?

Modret chuckled evilly at the thought, then turned his attention to the system, his tone filled with seriousness.

'System, tell me, how do I get shadow fragments?'
