Chapter 112 - Quiet Confidences

"You stayed awake," Therese murmured, closing the door behind her.

"A mother always does," Tara replied with a faint smile. "How was it?"

"Grand. Overwhelming. Too much perfume and jewels. But…" She hesitated, then admitted, "It was not unbearable. Not with Dorian."

Tara's brows lifted. First-name basis?" "The prince?"

Therese nodded. "He asked me to dance. Twice."

"And?" Tara's tone was steady, though her eyes sharpened.

"Yes. He was kind, charming, even. Too refined. But I told him about chickens and root stores. He laughed." Therese smiled faintly. "I don't think he expected to hear that in the middle of a waltz."

Tara chuckled softly. "Few princes would. And yet… you are still smiling."

Therese shrugged. "It was pleasant. But I'd rather spend my days here, not chasing crowns." 

That drew a laugh from Tara, soft but genuine. "Good. Let him learn that not every woman is dazzled by crowns."

Tara searched her daughter's face. "And the court? Did they treat you well?"
