Chapter 23 - Should Be Called Dewott Now

On the way back to camp with the Shiny Ponyta, the little horse stumbled along, yet insisted on walking on his own.

Xu Li had offered to recall him into the Poké Ball and carry him back, but Ponyta refused.

Even so, Xu Li had now gained the Shiny Ponyta's initial trust. Even if he ran his hand along the blue flames of Ponyta's mane, he wouldn't get burned.

Most of Ponyta's moves focused on speed—it seemed he really was born to run.

"Waga—!"

Suddenly, Growlithe barked a warning.

Three Graveler burst out from the exposed rock on the slopes on either side of Mount Coronet.

Moments later, small pits appeared all over the ground, followed by a dozen Geodude crawling out one after another.

It was the Graveler family again—and this time, even more of them.

This wasn't Xu Li's first ambush.

Back in the Obsidian Fieldlands, if he hadn't had several Pokémon with him, he would have often fallen victim to wild Pokémon attacks. But now, all those attackers were neatly contained in Poké Balls.

Today, Xu Li had Growlithe, Axew, Chimchar, and Ponyta close by. Did these Graveler really still dare to attack? Were they that confident—or simply reckless?

There were many enemies, but at least no evolved leader had appeared yet.

"Boji!"

One Graveler grabbed a rock and hurled it at Chimchar, who dodged with a quick side roll, glaring back angrily.

Xu Li didn't dare let his guard down. He pulled out two Poké Balls and released Oshawott and Paras.

"Paras~"

As Paras appeared, he looked around blankly, then realized it was time to fight. He leapt up onto Xu Li's shoulder, glaring at the enemy Graveler.

"Spore—then Stun Spore!"

Paras no longer hesitated like he once did. The instant Xu Li gave the order, the mushrooms on his back shook, scattering a cloud of spores toward the Graveler group.

Paras's control had improved dramatically. Even from Xu Li's shoulder, not a single spore drifted toward his trainer.

The spores floated toward the left flank. The Graveler and Geodude tried to dodge, wary of being touched.

But this time, Paras deliberately expanded the range of the cloud, and several unlucky Geodude were blanketed in spores—falling asleep instantly.

The rest had barely sighed in relief when a second golden dust cloud—Stun Spore—rained down, paralyzing most of the remaining Geodude and even one Graveler.

Paras's Spore combo served as the signal. Chimchar, Growlithe, and Oshawott, who had just finished Focus Energy, charged into the enemy ranks.

Axew stayed behind to guard Xu Li.

The three attackers targeted the paralyzed Graveler first.

Growlithe led with Double-Edge, his body glowing with rocky energy as he barreled straight through a pack of Geodude, clearing a path.

The paralyzed Graveler tried to use Iron Defense, his body glinting faintly as he attempted to fortify himself and buy time for his companions.

But Chimchar made a taunting hand gesture—clearly mocking him.

The Graveler grew furious, abandoning his defense to ready a Self-Destruct, determined to blow up the insolent monkey.

Yet before he could detonate, sparks of paralysis rippled through his body. Immobilized, he couldn't even explode before Dewott (formerly Oshawott) dashed in, drawing its Shell Blade.

Water surged. Two slashes—sharp and precise.

Both hit vital points. The four-times-effective Razor Shell struck true, sending Graveler flying and knocking him out instantly.

With one Graveler down, Dewott and the others turned on the next.

The two remaining Graveler, watching their comrade fall so easily, huddled together warily, glaring at Dewott and his teammates.

Xu Li ordered Paras to unleash more Stun Spore, while summoning Eevee and Shinx to help clean up the lingering Geodude and capture them with Poké Balls.

The battle plan stayed the same: Growlithe charged, Chimchar disrupted, and Dewott dealt the decisive blows with his water attacks.

Finally, after dodging one Graveler's desperate Self-Destruct, all three were defeated. But their explosions shook the mountainside—drawing even more attention.

From both the cliffs and the rock walls, more Geodude and Graveler emerged, surrounding Xu Li on all sides. Even a Golem appeared at the edge of the slope.

"Fall back!"

Xu Li recalled his Pokémon. The Graveler swarm was too large—and when Rock-types gathered in such numbers, their courage and aggression multiplied.

Sure enough, several Geodude picked up rubble and hurled them using Rock Throw.

But before the stones could reach Xu Li, Paras's Absorb sapped the energy from them, turning the rocks to dust midair.

Some Graveler and Geodude couldn't hold back any longer. They used Rock Polish, boosting their speed, and rolled toward Xu Li like boulders in an avalanche.

Axew stepped forward, his legs glowing green. With a single Leafage kick, he sent one Graveler tumbling backward. The other Geodude were intercepted by Growlithe and Chimchar.

But for every wave they repelled, more kept coming.

Soon, Axew, Growlithe, Shinx, Eevee, and even Ponyta were all locked in combat, fending off the relentless Rock-types.

Against so many Rock/Ground Pokémon, Xu Li's team was at a disadvantage. Only Dewott held a clear type advantage—and Paras to some extent.

Then, out of the corner of his eye, Xu Li caught a flash of white light. He turned—and saw Dewott's entire body shining brightly.

"Evolving?!" Xu Li's eyes widened. "Protect Dewott!"

His Pokémon, though stunned, immediately moved to shield their teammate.

Growlithe leapt forward, roaring to draw enemy attention.

Axew, Chimchar, Shinx, and Eevee all stayed on guard, deflecting flying stones from any direction.

Finally, the white light faded—revealing Dewott's new form.

He had grown taller, leaner, and more agile—like a ninja. The single Shell Blade on his chest was now two, sheathed neatly at his thighs.

"Congratulations, Dewott—no, I should call you Dewott now."

"Hmph!" Dewott crossed his arms coolly, his expression proud yet composed.
