Chapter 146 - S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Sir, the target suddenly brought a woman home yesterday!"Watching Li Qingyuan and Jill walk out hand-in-hand for a date, Phil Coulson quickly reported to his boss.

"WTF? You called me on an encrypted satellite line just to report that?"Nick Fury, who had been racking his brain trying to figure out how to produce another loss-making report, nearly smashed the phone in anger.

Reporting every time the target changes women?Coulson, do you have a problem with the assignment I gave you? Are you deliberately messing with me?

Even though the surveillance footage of the subway kidnapping incident had been completely wiped by those four turtles, there were still plenty of eyewitnesses. Not to mention that the Foot Clan goons were all still alive.

So Coulson easily got the answer out of them: the guy who died so miserably must've kicked the wrong iron wall while picking soft targets—he provoked someone he shouldn't have.

Then, based on the information collected over the past few days about Li Qingyuan and his finances, Coulson concluded that this was the man they were looking for.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s internal data showed he was an expert in explosives, skilled with all kinds of bombs. However, his personality was extremely mild—practically harmless to humans and animals.

S.H.I.E.L.D. specialized in handling special individuals hidden among ordinary citizens. But even so, they had a relatively standardized procedure.

For harmless types like Li Qingyuan, the usual process was just a verbal warning—tell him to keep his head down and behave.

But that was only if the target had no flaws.

Now that Li Qingyuan carried a homicide on his back—sure, it looked like self-defense at the time—but S.H.I.E.L.D. would never care about that.

To Nick Fury, anyone with any sort of superhuman ability must fall under his jurisdiction. The one-eyed baldy had a massive control fetish and a severe persecution complex—believing everyone in the world was either his subordinate or his enemy.

Fine, yes, his intuition was annoyingly accurate. But honestly, the fact that someone like Nick Fury hadn't already been killed was practically a miracle.

Coulson had originally planned to confront Li Qingyuan today and lay things out—telling him to join S.H.I.E.L.D.

If the man was smart, he'd become an off-the-record agent—respond to orders when called, maybe get some salary and bonuses depending on how much Fury was willing to let slip between his fingers.

If he refused and resisted?S.H.I.E.L.D.'s secret prisons still had plenty of empty rooms.

As for justification?

Releasing a biological bomb in a crowded subway station—S.H.I.E.L.D. had more than enough grounds to suspect antisocial and anti-human tendencies, making it perfectly reasonable to arrest him without going through legal procedures.

After all, Li Qingyuan was just a slightly wealthy Chinese guy, not a super-rich like Tony Stark. Finding a reason to arrest someone like him was easy.

"Sir, I couldn't find any information on this Jill Valentine in the internal database,"Coulson quickly reported, hearing the displeasure in his superior's voice.

"You're sure? Not a single record?"Nick Fury finally calmed down, surprised.

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s internal database was something he personally supervised. As long as someone was human—even primitive tribes from the Amazon rainforest—there should be at least some trace.

"Nothing. Name, appearance, identity—none of the comparison data matches anything. It's like she appeared in this world out of thin air." Coulson felt deeply unsettled. In his mind, Li Qingyuan's danger level had jumped from C to A because of this woman's appearance.

"Do not make contact with the target for now. I'll send someone to assist you soon."A tense voice came from the other end.

"All matters regarding this case are now classified Level Eight. Report directly to me—do not enter the internal database."

"Understood, sir!" Coulson replied immediately.

Back then, he had handled the Skrull invasion alongside the Director. He knew those aliens could freely change appearances. A woman who suddenly fell out of the sky… who knew if she was some kind of alien forward scout?

Better safe than sorry—this was a lesson Coulson learned from decades of fieldwork and blood.

Otherwise, why had so many agents died within years of service, yet he not only stayed alive but thrived?

Speaking of which…Since the Director ordered no contact with the target…Did that mean he could finally go spend some quality time with his girlfriend?

"Lucky bastard."

Inside a café's private room, having listened to Coulson's entire call through surveillance, Li Qingyuan spoke quietly.

"Hypocritical politicians… they're the same no matter what world you're in."Jill, having roughly understood the structure of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury's self-righteous worldview, spoke dismissively.

Sure, from Nick Fury's own point of view, everything he did was to protect the so-called 'ordinary people,' taking all the sins and burdens upon himself—walking alone in darkness, almost moved to tears by his own noble suffering.

But in reality—Who gave him the authority to represent the whole world?

S.H.I.E.L.D.'s idea that superpowered individuals were too dangerous and must be centrally managed was simply laughable.

The classic "doing X but pretending to be Y."

In terms of destructive power, Stark Tower stood right in the middle of Manhattan. The weapons manufactured daily at Stark Industries could flatten the entire borough—yet S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't dare manage that.

And Hell's Kitchen and Queens had gunfire and explosions every night. Dozens of people dying per day was too common to even make tabloid news.Where was S.H.I.E.L.D., the 'defender of world peace,' then?

As the saying goes: your position determines your mindset.Whether S.H.I.E.L.D. or HYDRA—they were all just groups of arrogant bastards who believed they could decide others' lives and deaths. No different from the Umbrella Corporation in essence.

"Red Queen, can you hack into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database?"Li Qingyuan tapped the virtual chibi avatar on the table.

"Insufficient computing power. If you can upgrade my physical body, I can give it a try," the Red Queen calculated and said.

"Upgrade your body? What do you want?"If she could hack S.H.I.E.L.D., he wouldn't have to live in fear—he could just dump all of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dirty secrets online.

Over the years, S.H.I.E.L.D. had done plenty of filthy things in the shadows. That was why, in the original timeline, the moment S.H.I.E.L.D.'s database leaked, one of the world's most powerful intelligence organizations collapsed instantly—its elite agents turned into rats everyone wanted dead.

After all, who would believe an intelligence agency was full of good people?
