The plush carpet feels soft beneath my feet as I collapse onto the hotel room's couch. The plush cushions are a welcome change from the grime of New York's alleys and the sterile confines of SHIELD's interrogation room. Gatomon and BlackGatomon hop onto the couch with me, purring contentedly.
"That was the best meal ever!" Gatomon chirps, stretching languidly. "I still can't believe Tony Stark fed us like royalty."
BlackGatomon nudges me with her head. "Yeah, and the tuna was particularly delicious. Best I've ever had."
I manage a weak smile, but the mission weighs on my mind. The escape of Jokermon, the Green Goblin, and Datamon still gnaws at me. They got away, and that's a loose end I can't stand.
"What's wrong, Ethan?" Gatomon asks, her sharp eyes noticing my troubled expression.
BlackGatomon adds, "Yeah, what's bugging you?" She nudges me playfully, but her gaze is sharp.
I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "It's just… Jokermon. He got away. And the Goblin, and Datamon too. They're out there, somewhere." The thought sends a shiver down my spine. Jokermon, with his knack for manipulation and those Shadowstones… it's a recipe for disaster. And who knows what kind of dark powers they'll unleash next.
"And what about Dark Biomerge?" I continue, my voice low. "Jokermon was talking about it. What if they create more corrupted Digimon? What if they target someone else?" The image of Gwen, Renamon, and even Peter flashes in my mind.
Gatomon nuzzles my cheek. "Ethan, don't worry. We stopped them today, didn't we? We saved Gwen and Peter, and Renamon. We got the Goblin and Datamon to retreat. We're safe here, and we'll be ready if they come back."
BlackGatomon nods, her usual sass replaced with a rare seriousness. "Yeah, boss. We faced down a fused monster and came out on top. Jokermon's just a jester, and the Goblin's just a madman. We can handle them." Her tail flicks, a small sign of her returning confidence. "Besides, if they try anything, we'll be ready. We always are."
I look at my partners, their eyes filled with unwavering loyalty. They're right. We've faced worse. We'll face them again, together. A small, genuine smile finally touches my lips. "Yeah," I say, leaning back into the cushions. "Yeah, you're right. We will."
My door knocks, pulling me from my thoughts. I glance at Gatomon and BlackGatomon, who both seem to sense who it is. I get up and open the door to find Gwen standing there, with Renamon hovering slightly behind her.
"Gwen? Renamon? What are you guys doing here?"
Gwen shifts her weight, looking a little nervous. "Hey, Ethan. I… I wanted to talk. Since the bridge, and with Renamon… well, it's all a lot. I'm trying to figure out what's happening, what this means for me. You know, being a Chosen Child, and having Renamon as a partner. It feels… similar to what you're going through." She gestures vaguely towards me, then towards Renamon. "What is this now? Between us?"
I haven't properly explained what being a Tamer really means to Gwen. It's not just about fighting Digimon; it's a whole different world. "Come on in," I say, stepping aside to let her and Renamon enter.
Gwen glances at Renamon, who gives a slight nod before stepping inside. The hotel room suddenly feels a lot more crowded with two Digimon and two humans.
"So," I start, gesturing for them to sit, "being a Tamer… it's a big deal. It means you're connected to a Digimon, like me and my partners. This," I say, pulling out my own white Digivice, "is how we connect. It's more than just a phone."
Gwen pulls out her own device, a sleek blue model that looks surprisingly similar to mine. "You mean… this thing? It used to be my phone, but then… Renamon… and it turned into this." She holds it out, her voice laced with a mix of awe and confusion. "It let Renamon turn into Kyubimon. I've seen your Digimon do it too, Ethan. Agumon and Gabumon… they get so big and strong."
I nod, taking her Digivice and turning it over in my hands. "Yeah, exactly. This Digivice, it acts as a bridge between our worlds, the human world and the Digital World. It channels our emotions, our energy, and allows the Digimon to Digivolve." I hand it back to her. "It's what allows them to change into stronger forms, like Kyubimon becoming more powerful. It strengthens your bond, you know?"
Gwen looks at Renamon, then back at me, her brow furrowed. "So, it's like… a translator? And a power-up button?"
"That is an oversimplification," I chuckle. "As for the responsibilities… well, it means you're responsible for your Digimon. For keeping them safe, for helping them grow, and for making sure they don't cause trouble in our world. It's a partnership, Gwen. A real partnership." I pause, meeting her gaze. "It's not always easy, but it's definitely an adventure."
"So, Renamon can get stronger?" Gwen asks, her eyes wide with a mixture of hope and determination.
"Yeah," I confirm, leaning back against the couch. "But it's not just about getting stronger. You and Renamon need to have a deeper bond. The stronger your connection, the more power she can unlock."
Gwen turns to Renamon, a soft smile on her face. "I don't think that will be a problem," she says, her voice filled with a newfound confidence. "I can already feel it. Renamon and I are going to get along great."
Renamon looks at Gwen, her icy blue eyes meeting Gwen's earnest gaze. A subtle nod from the fox Digimon is all the confirmation Gwen needs. I can see it too, a flicker of understanding passing between them. This partnership is just beginning.
The weight of the world, or rather, worlds, feels a little lighter after that conversation. Gwen's admiration is nice, maybe a little too nice, but I can't deny it's a welcome change from the usual panic and fear. It's easy to brush it off, though. It's not like I'm some superhero. I'm just a guy with some really cool digital pets and a knack for hacking.
"You handled yourself really well back there, Ethan," Gwen says, her voice soft. "I mean, with the bridge collapsing and everything. You were so calm."
I shrug, trying to downplay it. "Nah, it was mostly Gatomon and BlackGatomon. And Agumon and Gabumon. They're the real heroes, you know? Plus, Renamon stepped up, and you were pretty brave yourself." I glance at Renamon, who gives a slight nod. "And honestly, Peter wasn't exactly hurting for help either."
Gwen smiles, a genuine, warm expression that makes my stomach do a little flip. It's definitely more comfortable than the fear and panic of fighting the Green Goblin. "Still," she insists, her gaze lingering on me a moment too long. "You always seem to know what to do. You help everyone, and you always have a plan."
"It's not really a plan," I admit, shifting uncomfortably. The unspoken feelings in the air are starting to get a little awkward, and I can feel a blush creeping up my neck. "It's more like… reacting. And I've got a lot of help." I gesture to the Digimon. "They're the real powerhouses."
Gwen's smile falters slightly, a hint of disappointment clouding her features. She looks down at her phone, then back at me, her expression turning serious. "Right. Well, I should probably get back. It's getting late."
She starts to stand, and I quickly follow suit. "Oh, okay. You heading back to your place?"
"Yeah," she says, her voice a little quieter now. She hesitates for a moment, then looks directly at me, a shy hope in her eyes. "Hey, Ethan? Um… about everything… you know, the Digimon and all…" She takes a deep breath. "Would you… would you be willing to teach me? About being a Tamer? I want to understand more, and… maybe I could help someday."
"Yeah," I say, a wide grin spreading across my face. "Yeah, Gwen, I'd love to teach you."
Her face lights up, a radiant smile chasing away the shadows. "Really? Oh, that's great! Thank you, Ethan!" She practically bounces with excitement. "I should go. I'll… I'll text you later?"
"Definitely," I reply, feeling a warmth spread through me that has nothing to do with the plush hotel carpet.
Gwen practically skips out of the room, Renamon following at a more dignified pace. Renamon gives me a knowing glance before disappearing through the door with Gwen. The moment they're gone, Gatomon and BlackGatomon practically pounce on me.
"Well, well, well," BlackGatomon purrs, circling me. "Look at Mr. Smooth. Playing teacher already."
Gatomon adds, "She seemed really happy, Ethan. You did good."
"Quiet, let's just go to sleep."
Gwen walks down the hallway, her heart pounding. She can still feel the warmth of Ethan's smile, the genuine excitement in his voice when he agreed to teach her. It's more than just wanting to learn about Digimon; it's about being closer to Ethan, about sharing this incredible, terrifying world with him. Renamon walks silently beside her, a comforting, enigmatic presence.
"You know," Gwen says softly, looking at Renamon, "that was… a lot. All of it. The bridge, the fighting, the Digimon… and now this. Me, learning to be a Tamer." She pauses, gathering her thoughts. "It's kind of overwhelming, but… I think I'm ready for it. Especially with you by my side."
Renamon glances at Gwen, a subtle flicker in her icy blue eyes. She doesn't speak, but her presence is a silent affirmation. Gwen knows this is just the beginning. She has a lot to learn, a lot to understand, but with Ethan's guidance and Renamon's unwavering support, she feels ready for whatever comes next.
