Chapter 99 - Ch. 36: Christmas (Part 1)

Christmas night settles over Guarly.

A car drives through the streets until it stops in front of a thirty-story building. Four people get out, leaving a man with military gear behind the wheel. A woman with a sword strapped to her back opens the trunk and hands a block of plastic explosive to each soldier. Without wasting time, they run to opposite sides of the building.

The sergeant closes the trunk, shaking dust off her uniform. Carrying the last C4 charge, she heads into an alley beside the building. With one hand she pushes aside a large trash container, revealing a small metallic rectangle with two handles and four buttons—two blue and two red. She places the device on the ground and presses the two blue buttons. Energy "teeth" form along its edges and instantly cut through the concrete until the handles stop the advance. She then presses the two red buttons, causing the energy teeth to flip inward and form a solid platform. The woman lifts the entire slab of concrete, places the explosive underneath, then sets the slab back in place. She presses the red buttons again and, before removing the device, presses one red and one blue button, leaving no trace of what she has done.

She puts the trash container back over the cut floor, hooks the device onto a clasp on her back, and walks toward the front of the building.

Meanwhile, the driver waits, unaware that his comrades have been gone too long. He glances nervously in the rearview mirror and notices a blur of movement. He grabs his pistol, ready to defend himself—only to be greeted by Zafiro, who raises her glowing right palm. One strike sends him flying, knocking him unconscious against the wall by the passenger door.

Seeing the driver lying on the pavement, the sergeant draws her sword and scans the rooftops, finding nothing. She whistles to check on her subordinates, but is answered by dead silence. Suddenly she leaps as the ground tries to trap her feet—only to be caught by a perfectly aimed sphere of wind that slams her into the street. As she tries to stand, Topacio appears beside her and presses two fingers to the back of her neck, releasing a shock that leaves her twitching before knocking her out.

Moments later, the detective's black car arrives. The four vigilantes gather the unconscious soldiers, carrying them to the middle of the street and laying them out beside their leader.

The long-haired detective steps out of his patrol car and walks over to the vigilantes. Rolling the sergeant over, he finds the same rectangular device they've seen all week. The yellow-hooded teen asks, "What is that thing?"

Matías sighs, glancing into a nearby alley before answering honestly, "I don't know. But whatever it is, it's in the wrong hands and being used against the city."

Plata adds, "The other soldiers had similar ones, but cheaper—probably copper or some weak material. This one's clearly higher quality."

The detective nods, remembering the concrete residue found in previous vehicles. He asks the teens to follow him to the back of the enemy car. After finding the keys on the driver, he opens the trunk—empty. The realization hits hard: whatever the explosives are for, they've already been planted somewhere in the city.

Surgiri puts on latex gloves, takes out a kit of swabs from his coat, and begins collecting samples from the vehicle. After sealing them in airtight bags, he sighs heavily and tells the teens to leave. In an instant, they leap to a rooftop and vanish.

The detective walks into the alley, removes his gloves, lights a cigarette, and tosses the rectangular device into the shadows—where Jayden catches it.

Matías: exhaling smoke "What the hell are those things?"

Jayden: crushing the device "I told you. Objects no one else should see. They're illegal on this planet."

Matías: "At least tell me what they do."

Jayden: glancing at the soldiers "Silent drills. Used for infiltration, with laser cutters that can pierce almost anything. They're old models with limited depth, so whatever they're doing isn't far below the surface. The bad news is—they leave no trace."

Jayden vanishes in a gust of wind that extinguishes the detective's cigarette. Turning around, Matías finds all the soldiers neatly loaded into his patrol car, already handcuffed. He laughs softly.

"Not much, but I guess that's a Christmas gift."

As he drives off, he thinks, If I can gather enough concrete samples… maybe I can track where the explosives are.

The teenagers run up the walls of Liz Tower and leap onto the rooftop. They realize something strange—they aren't tired at all, not even out of breath.

Alexa frowns. "Have you guys felt weird since we went to the Oksilis planet?"

Emily lowers her scarf and opens and closes her hand. "Yeah… I feel stronger, lighter. Like everything weighs less. Could it be some alien virus?"

Tyron sits on the edge, legs dangling over the drop. "I doubt it. Maybe that planet's gravity made us stronger."

Alexa gazes at Guarly's lights. "Either way… let's hope if it's a disease, the master can fix it."

Emily sighs, blushing slightly. "It's a beautiful night… Merry Christmas."

"Thanks, you too," Alexa and Tyron reply.

Tyron looks a bit sad. "It's strange Fran didn't come tonight."

"She said in the group chat she's trying to figure out that golden box," Alexa answers.

Emily nods seriously. "Fran and I thought it might be some kind of container… but even Niter didn't know what it was. The only way to find out is opening it."

At the waterfall where they usually leave their gear, a visible Flying Blade slams into the golden cube—doing absolutely nothing despite the heavy Fiu concentration. Francesca lifts the cube and tries to crush it with her glowing palms. Nothing. She increases the Fiu until veins stand out on her arms—still nothing. Panting, she drops it.

She forms a Concentrated Energy Sphere and hurls it. The explosion shakes the forest, dust flying everywhere. When it clears, the cube is untouched.

She sighs, sheathing her katana. She tries everything—searching for switches, sensors, freezing it (the ice melts instantly). Nothing works.

Checking the time—3:00 a.m.—she decides to head home. As she turns, an idea strikes her: scanning or sound waves. She sends a message to the pink-haired girl with purple streaks.

"Tomorrow I need your help with something."

Dawn breaks on December twenty-fifth. Guarly wakes to open gifts and spend Christmas with family—except for the four teens. After sending their clones home, they stretch, yawning. Jayden is nowhere to be seen.

They approach the cabin cautiously. No answer. They knock, shout—nothing.

"Should we use one of our emergency summons?" Alexa suggests.

They all shake their heads. Too risky.

Alexa checks the time. "It's already nine."

Tyron grins mischievously. "Girls… do you realize what an amazing opportunity this is?"

Emily shivers. Alexa smiles knowingly.

"Our chance to snoop around the cabin," Tyron declares.

"I like it," Alexa says.

Emily hesitates. "I don't think that's right—"

"Come on," Tyron insists. "Maybe he left instructions inside!"

Before they can act, a powerful gust erupts behind them.

"Well done, you two geniuses," Jayden says.

In a flash, he vanishes with Tyron and Alexa. A loud thud and screams follow. Jayden reappears with them—now sporting three massive bumps on their heads.

Francesca nods. "Deserved."

Emily winces in sympathy.

Jayden pours tea and asks calmly, "Did you figure out what the golden box does?"

All eyes turn to Francesca, who shakes her head.

"Fine," Jayden sighs. "You have until Monday. For now, training until noon. First question—how does Fiu work?"

After their explanations, Jayden nods approvingly.

"Good. Now everyone except Emily will develop a new personal technique."

Emily blinks. "Why not me?"

Jayden smiles. "Because you already did—by adapting control into creation. That's crucial."

Embarrassed, Emily nods.

Five clones of Jayden emerge. He hands short swords to two of them and faces Emily.

"While the others adapt," he says, "you survive."

The battle begins.

Elsewhere, Alexa trains with wind and stones. Francesca works on Ice Needles—a fast, low-cost attack. Tyron asks if he can regain his lightning state safely.

"Yes," the clone answers. "But you must reinforce your organs too. Elemental Fiu changes strengths and weaknesses—speed up, strength down."

And so, on Christmas morning, training continues—harder than ever.
