Logan's POV
The sound that escaped my throat wasn't human. It was something raw and broken, a noise that came from the deepest part of my chest where all my worst fears lived.
Horror crashed over me in waves. Pure, devastating horror that left me gasping for air that suddenly felt too thick to breathe.
Those handful of words had sent me plummeting into an abyss I thought I'd crawled out of long ago.
Before I knew what was happening, my fists were twisted in Caleb's shirt, my knuckles white and trembling as I hauled him closer. My breathing came in sharp, ragged bursts, each one tasting like smoke and ash.
"Explain yourself," I snarled, my entire body feeling like it was being consumed from the inside out. Fury and bewilderment coursed through my bloodstream like poison.
Caleb didn't resist. He didn't try to break free or defend himself. Instead, his head dropped slightly, as if he'd already surrendered to whatever punishment awaited him for the truth he was about to reveal.
