The words Scarlett had spoken kept circling through my thoughts like a relentless storm.
She was Windsor's mother.
No matter how hard I tried, the pieces wouldn't fit together in my mind. The revelation left me reeling as we drove through the darkness, heading South. Every instinct I possessed screamed that Windsor wasn't somewhere up North where we'd been desperately searching.
My parents had ordered every guard in our territory to sweep the land from border to border, yet silence had greeted us since their initial deployment.
I cast sideways glances at the woman hunched in the passenger seat beside me. Her delicate body seemed even more fragile than before, wrapped in a thin blanket as she curled into herself. The weight loss since our last encounter was unmistakable, carving deeper shadows beneath her eyes and hollowing her cheeks.
"How bad is it?" I asked, my voice cutting through the night air as I pressed harder on the accelerator.
