Audrey had discovered her destined mate.
The realization hit me like a physical blow, though I suppose this was the inevitable risk for couples who bonded before reaching the age when true mates could be sensed.
Night had settled around us completely, yet the moon's luminous glow bathed everything in silver light. We had positioned ourselves on a weathered log that had fallen across the forest floor. A shiver ran through me as the evening breeze cut through my thin clothing. My body jerked in surprise when Audrey suddenly draped her soft cardigan across my shoulders.
I glanced toward her questioningly. "You looked like you could use it," she said quietly. "Your lips are getting pale."
