Chapter 13 – Broken Hope
The morning mist clung to the air as Naruto stumbled out of bed, hair sticking in all directions. The wooden floor creaked under his steps as he made his way to the small kitchen.
Tazuna's daughter was already there, preparing rice and miso soup. She smiled faintly at him. "You're up early."
"Yeah," Naruto yawned, rubbing his stomach. "Guess I'm just hungry."
But before he could sit, Inari walked in, carrying a small bucket of water from the well outside. His eyes flicked toward Naruto, cold and unwelcoming, before he set the bucket down with a dull thud.
Naruto scowled. "What's your problem, huh? You've been glaring at me since yesterday."
Inari turned his back. "You wouldn't understand. You think you're strong, but you'll just end up dead like everyone else who stood against Gato."
Naruto froze, surprised at the boy's harsh tone. "Tch… you don't know anything about me."
Inari spun around, his fists shaking. "No! You don't know anything about us! About this village! About how much we've lost!" His voice cracked, anger mixing with grief. "People like you come here, pretending you can help, and then you leave… or you die. Nothing changes!"
The room went silent. Even Tazuna's daughter lowered her head, eyes glistening.
Naruto's jaw tightened. For a moment, he wanted to shout back, to tell Inari that he was wrong. But the pain in the boy's voice stopped him. Instead, he muttered, almost to himself, "I'll prove you wrong… I'll show you that not everyone breaks."
Inari's lip trembled, but he stormed off before anyone could see the tears gathering in his eyes.

Later, as Team 7 followed Tazuna to the bridge construction site, Sakura glanced at Naruto. "You didn't have to fight with him, you know. He's just a kid."
Naruto frowned, his hands shoved into his pockets. "I'm not gonna let him say stuff like that. He's given up… but I won't."
Sasuke gave him a side glance. "Words are cheap. You'll have to prove it with strength."
Naruto's head snapped toward him. "And I will!"
Kakashi, walking at the back, watched quietly. His single visible eye narrowed slightly. Naruto… you're growing. You just don't realize it yet.

Meanwhile, deep within the mist-shrouded forest, Zabuza stirred awake. His body was still weak, but the pain had dulled thanks to careful treatment.
Haku sat beside him, tending to a pot of boiling herbs. The hunter-nin's mask lay on the ground, revealing delicate features that contrasted with the deadly precision in their movements.
"You should rest more," Haku said softly, turning to check Zabuza's bandages. "Your body hasn't healed completely."
Zabuza's gravelly voice rumbled. "I don't have the luxury of rest. That Sharingan brat… and those kids. Next time, I won't underestimate them."
Haku's hands paused for a moment before continuing. "I'll protect you, no matter what. That's my purpose."
The firelight flickered across Zabuza's scarred face, and for a brief moment, something softened in his eyes. "Haku… you're the only one I can rely on."
Haku's lips curved into a small, almost invisible smile. "Then let me make sure you never fall again."
The mist outside thickened, as if the land itself was preparing for another storm.

Back at Tazuna's home, Naruto lay on the porch that evening, staring at the sky. The sound of waves crashing against the shore filled the silence.
His fists tightened on the wooden boards beneath him. Inari thinks there's no such thing as heroes… that people like me can't change anything.
A flash of memory came unbidden—lonely nights on the swing outside the Academy, villagers whispering and glaring at him, the crushing weight of being unwanted.
"I know what it feels like… to think you're alone," Naruto whispered to himself. "But I'll never let that stop me. I'll be Hokage one day. And before that… I'll show Inari that giving up isn't the answer."
The boy's eyes burned with determination, reflecting the last rays of sunset.
Far away, in the forests cloaked in mist, another pair of eyes—sharp, unyielding—watched from the shadows.
Haku stood among the trees, observing the shinobi house from a distance. The hunter-nin's gaze lingered on Naruto for a long moment before melting back into the mist.
The clash between hope and despair was drawing closer.
