Chapter 45 - CHAPTER 45:FIVE HUNDRED

The invite came on thick paper.

Not email. Paper. Cream, with a blind emboss that you could feel with your thumb. CTICC. Cape Town International Convention Centre. Five hundred seats. Gold foil on the edge.

Elena got three of them. Not one.

The courier brought them to the lab in Woodstock, not to the penthouse. The lab where the gold dress had been binned, where the beige bag with the stuck zipper had been logged as evidence, where the faint rubber band mark still sat on the marble table upstairs.

Chloe opened the door. She was in lab coat, hair up, gloves off, one glove still hanging from her pocket.

"For Elena Cross?" the courier asked.

"For us," Chloe said, and took the envelopes.

There were three. Same handwriting on each, black ink.

_Ms. Elena Cross - Founder, Cross - Table A, Seat 1_

_Ms. Chloe Cross - UCT Biochemistry, Patent Co-holder - Table A, Seat 2_

_Mr. Michael Cross - Guardian - Table A, Seat 3_

Chloe stared at the second one. Her name. Not Adams. Cross. Patent Co-holder. She turned it over. On the back, a small printed line: _E-CROSS 3.0 Launch - 09:03 AM - Mother Daughter White Suits_

Elena was at the bench, pipetting. The serum was clear, three point zero, the one that beat seventy-two hours. The one that had triggered forty million from Sephora the week Vanessa put three million debt on an eighteen-year-old name.

"Five hundred," Chloe whispered.

Elena didn't look up from the pipette. "Five hundred what?"

"Five hundred people," Chloe said. She held out the three envelopes. "They invited three. Not one. Table A."

Elena put the pipette down. She pulled her gloves off slowly, finger by finger, and took the envelopes.

She opened the first one. Inside, a card.

_You were bought for $12M. Come tell them you were saved._

Not from Sephora. From the CTICC programming board. A woman Elena had met once in 2019, when she had no name and was called ghost wife.

Elena opened the second. Same card, but the line under was different.

_You called her Mama but she put debt on your name. Come tell them who your Mama is._

Chloe's hands shook.

Elena opened the third. Michael's.

_You paid $12M for a ghost and she brought you a daughter. Come sit front row._

Elena put the three cards on the bench next to the serum.

"Front row," she said. "He always sits front row."

The lab door opened. Sandalwood. No knock.

Michael came in, black cashmere, but today with a coat over arm because Cape Town wind was up. His watch caught the lab light.

Chloe held out his envelope.

"You got invited," she said.

He took it. He read it. He didn't smile. He folded it and put it in his pocket, not on bench.

"Five hundred," he said.

"Five hundred," Elena repeated. "Yesterday Vanessa ran with beige bag. Today they invite five hundred."

"Tomorrow viral," Chloe said quietly. She was looking at the serum. Clear. Three point zero. "If we do white suits and pig blood bowl ring."

Elena nodded. The ring was in a small steel dish on the top shelf, next to the pig blood from Salt River butcher that was kept cold. The cheap ring Daniel had given her before concrete. Not the twelve million receipt. That was framed in Dubai and now also in Cape Town lab wall with yellow tape and UCT receipt crooked.

Michael walked to the bench and looked at the serum.

"Beats seventy-two hours?" he asked.

"Beats seventy-two," Elena said. "Lab result this morning. Seventy-two hour mark, still clear, still holds."

"Forty million triggers on that?" he asked.

"Triggers," she said. "Sephora clause. 09-03-09 date."

Chloe put her lab coat on tighter. "So we go tomorrow in white marble dress and white dress not gold and we say 'I was bought for twelve million' in front of five hundred?"

"We say 'I was saved for twelve million,'" Elena corrected. "And you say 'My mom died thief? No she died chemist.'"

Chloe swallowed. "I never spoke in front of five hundred."

"You spoke in front of four thousand on live when you threw gold dress in bin," Elena said.

"That was bin," Chloe said. "This is CTICC."

Michael stepped to the bench and picked up the white suits that were hanging behind the door. Two white suits, mother and daughter, same cut, same marble dust still on one from yesterday. He had steamed them last night while Elena and Chloe slept in the penthouse, Table Mountain view, rooms next to each other.

He held them up.

"You don't need white to be queen," he said, for the third time in two days. "But you own white now. And tomorrow five hundred sees that."

Elena took one suit. Chloe took the other.

"Will you be backstage?" Elena asked him, not looking at him, looking at the suit.

"No," he said. "Front row. Table A Seat 3. I don't interrupt."

That was his line from every launch. No interrupt. He watches, blue-grey, cashmere, sandalwood. He doesn't touch. He did that at UCT gate, at boardroom, at Dubai wall.

Chloe folded her envelope and put it in her backpack, next to the lab notebook where E-CROSS 09-03-09 was written in Elena's handwriting from 2009, the handwriting Chloe had recognized last week when Elena showed her the notebook and said "That's mom's handwriting" and Chloe had cried for the first time.

"Can I wear lab coat over white suit?" Chloe asked.

"White on white," Elena said. "You did that in boardroom. You looked taller."

Chloe nodded. She put the serum vials into the cold box, careful, like always.

Michael put his coat on the back of the chair. He took the three invite cards and lined them up on the bench, straight, cream on white.

"Five hundred invites," he said. "One family."

Elena looked at the cards. Elena Cross. Chloe Cross. Michael Cross. Table A. Front.

"Debt dies today, love stays," Chloe whispered, remembering the receipt wall in Dubai, five plus seven plus three.

Elena picked up the card that said _You paid $12M for a ghost and she brought you a daughter_ and slipped it into Michael's cashmere pocket. Her fingers brushed the wool for half a second. No touch rule, but pocket is not skin.

He didn't move.

"You paid twelve million," she said, quiet. "Tomorrow you sit front row and watch what twelve million bought."

"I paid twelve million to save," he corrected, same correction as yesterday on the seventy-third floor. "Tomorrow I watch what you built with it."

Chloe watched them. The space between them was still small. The aircon hummed. The pig blood bowl was cold on the top shelf.

"Tomorrow we pack white marble dress again?" she asked.

"Tomorrow we pack two," Elena said. "Mother daughter white. And one black cashmere backstage that doesn't interrupt."

Michael touched the edge of the bench, not Elena. The burn on his wrist showed under the watch.

"One receipt at a time, Queen," he said, the line from boarding, from night drive, from Dubai wall.

Elena smiled. Black armour soft, for a second.

"One invite at a time," she said. "Five hundred invites. One family."

She took the serum cold box and handed it to Chloe. Chloe held it with both hands, like a baby.

The three envelopes stayed on the bench, cream, gold foil, five hundred seats waiting.

Downstairs, the lab bin was still open. Gold dress inside. Tomorrow after CTICC, there would be a white suit story to tell, and a pig blood bowl ring viral story to tell, and a receipt wall story to tell, but tonight there were just three invites on a lab bench and a cold box that beat seventy-two hours and a family that had Table A, Seats 1,2,3.

Michael opened the lab door to the hallway, black cashmere doorway, again.

"Come in," he said.

Elena was already in. She had been in since 2009 when five million moved first. But she walked through again, white suit over arm, daughter next to her with cold box, front row waiting tomorrow.

"We already did, Papa M," Chloe said, and she put the CTICC invites in her backpack on top of the UCT receipt that was now framed crooked under twelve million.
