Chapter 90 - GTAG Chapter 90: The Pyramid

GTAG Chapter 90: The Pyramid

"What… is this?"

Alice's eyes widened as she stared at the colossal structure before them.

No one answered her. The two figures at her side were just as stunned.

They knew what they were looking at—because they had seen it before on television.

A pyramid.

The mysterious monuments of the Egyptian desert, whose construction in ancient times remained unsolved. Humanity never ceased marveling at them.

But the pyramid now towering before them dwarfed any they had seen in pictures or documentaries.

That wasn't even the real issue. The problem was—why was there a pyramid here?

Alice had triple-checked. This was the ruins of Raccoon City, without a doubt. The wreckage of the surrounding urban sprawl proved it.

And yet, in the middle of the city stood a pyramid that didn't belong.

Who built it here, and why?

No one had an answer.

"Hank… maybe we should just leave. This place feels wrong. What if a bunch of aliens jump out and abduct us?"

Claire tugged nervously at Hank's sleeve.

"…We're already here. Walking away without finding Umbrella's base doesn't sit right. Besides, what if this pyramid is one of their projects?"

Hank rubbed his scaled, bald head as he spoke.

Alice shook her head immediately. "Unlikely. Umbrella never wastes resources on something like this."

"Either way, I'm going in. If you don't want to, you can stay out here. It's dangerous, I won't deny that."

"You wait here," Hank said, patting Claire's shoulder before following Alice toward the massive pyramid.

"I'm not a child anymore…"

Claire muttered under her breath but didn't disobey.

She remembered the last time she had. Back then, as her powers grew stronger, she began resenting being left behind whenever Hank went scavenging for food or striking Umbrella facilities.

Once, she had secretly followed him.

At first, she kept far enough away to remain unseen.

But as she closed in, Hank noticed. He beat her soundly in a fury, and after that she never dared test his patience again—especially in dangerous situations.

"You didn't forbid me from going somewhere else though…"

Her eyes flicked about. Picking a random direction, she wandered off.

Alice said Umbrella's base was in Raccoon City, but that didn't necessarily mean it was beneath the pyramid.

Didn't Alice also suggest the pyramid might have nothing to do with Umbrella at all?

So Claire began searching for other suspicious traces nearby.

And she found something.

Circling around the back of the pyramid, she came across a strange path.

It looked as though countless giant serpents had slithered across it, pressing grooves into the ground.

Following the trail, Claire arrived at the edge of a yawning abyss.

The pit was hundreds of meters wide, plunging to unknown depths.

She fell silent, a cold weight pressing into her chest.

Could the pyramid have been built from stone excavated from this pit?

The walls bore the scars of deliberate cutting. The truth felt uncomfortably close.

But rather than triumph, dread filled her.

The grooves and markings weren't the work of men. And the huge, curving steps descending into the abyss confirmed it—creatures lived here.

Enormous, tentacled creatures, towering several meters tall.

No human hand had shaped this.

Click-clack.

Claire stumbled back, sending loose pebbles tumbling into the pit. Their echoes grew faint as they fell, hinting at bottomless depth.

No. She had to go back and find Hank.

She had grown bolder in recent years, but this was different. Facing the unknown alone was nothing short of suicide.

Only near Hank did she feel safe.

On her way back, she couldn't stop glancing over her shoulder.

The oppressive dread of the pit gnawed at her, as though something was following her from below.

Regret twisted her gut. She should have listened and stayed put.

"Claire… you ran off again."

Hank's voice carried restrained anger, but to her ears it was a lifeline.

"Hank!"

She flung herself at him, nearly in tears.

"What happened? Did something attack you?"

Her teary eyes softened his expression.

Alice drew her gun, scanning the shadows. "Something followed you?"

"I don't know." Claire wiped her cheeks. "I found a massive pit. Definitely not man-made."

Hank and Alice exchanged grim looks.

Earlier, they had examined the pyramid up close. The stones were each four meters across, carefully stacked. No entrance was found.

It didn't look like a true structure at all, more like a stockpile of building blocks.

Strangely, they had both reached the same unsettling conclusion.

And now, with Claire's discovery of the abyss, they headed there together.

With Hank beside her, Claire's fear eased, and she even led the way.

Then they saw it—the endless black pit yawning before them.

"How… was this dug?" Alice whispered.

For a moment, both suspected Umbrella had unleashed some kind of bioweapon to carve such a thing.

"Whoever made this hasn't been here for a long time. It looks abandoned," Hank muttered.
