Chapter 16 - Long Lines

As the pair was walking away from the statue depicting Mercy's founder, Warden Godsworth, Vigil had realized that they were standing in a vast park with lush greenery all around.

Witch had noticed the boy's curious gaze being drawn to the park that surrounded them and decided to teach the boy a little bit about the place, as well as some other portions of the city while she was at it.

"As of currently, we are walking in one of the five main directional parks."

She said, drawing Vigil's attention.

"Each park is named after what they are most known for. In the northern part of Mercy, where we are now, is the great jungle. In the east are calm lakes. To the south, the grassy plains. West, the frozen peaks. And finally, at the center of Mercy, is the town of founding's, the small rural village that Mercy once was before it became a vast city like it is today."

After hearing this, Vigil looked around again while thinking:

'So if this is what the area around the great jungle looks like, then how about the places that surround the other parks?'

While thinking this, the duo kept marching on.

At the moment, Vigil had no clue where Witch wanted to take him and although he was quite curious about it, he didn't ask her anything.

This was because he just wanted to take in the wondrous views as they were walking.

But at first, it was kind of hard for the boy to focus on the scenery as he could both see, and feel, the questioning gazes of a few of the people that they had walked by.

However, he soon learned to get used to them, as he had a sneaking suspicion that their gazes would be an everyday occurrence.

An hour and a half passed in silence before the duo had stopped in front of a large building with giant pillars made out of polished white marble.

It looked like a mix between a temple and a court house.

After standing there for a few moments, the long silence between the two was broken by the sound of Witch's voice.

"Alright kid, before we go in, there is something that I, as an adult, must ask you..."

She said as she turned to look at the young boy with a rarely seen serious expression on her face.

Actually, this was the first time that Vigil had ever seen her look like this, so in response to her words, he grabbed the hilt of his sword in preparation for something dangerous.

"... Are you prepared to face the worst boredom known to man?"

Those words took a moment to register in Vigil's head.

But when they did, he stopped, took his hand off of his sword, and then proceeded to give the woman one of the most dumbfounded looks he's ever given anyone.

"... Am I prepared to be bored..? Hah... Why can't you just ever be serious for once."

He said as he shook his head side-to-side in disapproval.

Hearing this, Witch was quick to rebuttal.

"Hey, I am being serious! You know what, let's make a deal. If you can go the entire time in there without getting tired or frustrated, then I owe you a favor. But if you fail to do that, then you owe me a favor. Deal?"

She said as she reached out her hand, intending to seal the deal with a simple handshake.

Seeing the outstretched hand in front of him, Vigil thought that this bet was a surefire way to get Witch to owe him a favor.

So, he responded in kind and took the woman's hand, giving it a small shake.

In response to this, Witch showed a foxy grin and whispered something to herself under her breath.

"Oh, the naivety."

Vigil immediately thought that he'd made a terrible mistake after being shown that smile accompanied by those words. So, he quickly tried to take back the deal that he'd just made.

However, before he could even open his mouth, Witch had started walking into the building.

Noticing her walking away, Vigil promptly decided to follow her.

By the time that he'd caught up to the woman, they were already inside of the building. What had greeted them inside was a large hall filled with tens of lines all with hundreds of people, lined up for... Well, Vigil didn't know what for, so he just decided to ask the one person he knew that would.

"Witch, why are there so many people waiting in line here?"

Hearing the young boy's question, Witch took a quick glance at him before walking towards the line that was situated on the far left side of the hall.

Vigil chased right after her in order to not get left behind and accidentally split up in this room filled with thousands of people.

When they had gotten to the line, there was a small sign at the back of it with bold writing that said 'registration line here' plastered on it.

While looking at the sign, Witch had quickly gained his attention once more with the next words that she said.

"Come on, let's get in line. I don't want to wait here any longer than I already have to."

With that being said, Vigil then lined up alongside Witch.

***

"Next!"

A woman in her mid forties called out, signaling the next people in line that it was their turn.

As the pair had begun walking towards the woman that sat at the other side of the kiosk, Witch had whispered something into Vigil's ear.

"I'll be cashing in that favor later, by the way."

At the sounds of those words, Vigil, contrary to his previous beliefs, had gotten much more irritated than he already was.

When he was still wandering around War Field solo, there had been many times in which he'd needed to wait patiently for the right time to strike or flee.

During those times, he'd thought to himself that he was good at keeping patient and waiting. However, now... Now he was second guessing those thoughts of his.

The reason?

Six. Hours.

They sat in line with nothing to do for six whole hours.

At the beginning of their long wait they chatted a little bit about this and that. But due to Vigils' closed off personality, there wasn't all that much to talk about.

So after the first thirty minutes had passed and they had run out of things to say to each other, the next five and a half hours were spent in complete and utter silence.

Understandably, he had gotten quite bored and that boredom soon turned into irritation.

When Vigil and Witch had finally made it to the kiosk, Vigil had to be put through a small amount of questioning.

The questions consisted of simple things like, where had he come from and how old was he. However, the questioning didn't take nearly as long as most people did due to the slight interruption that Witch had caused when she leaned over the table to whisper something in the ladies ear.

When the lady finished listening to what Witch had to say, the woman's head quickly snapped in her direction, a questioning look plastered on her face.

She then looked down at a device that was hidden under the table.

Seeing the slight green glow of the device, her face that was full of questions soon became one of disbelief as she slowly looked up at the small boy standing across from her.

After taking a few seconds to calm down from the shock, the woman quickly got up from her seat and went into a room that was situated further towards the back of the hall, making her unable to be seen by the pair.

While she was gone, Vigil turned towards Witch and asked what was going on.

"Did you do something excessive again, Witch?"

In response to his questioning gaze and words, she simply shrugged and proceeded to tell him what he'd already heard before.

"Like I said, I don't want to be here any longer than I have to. So, I kind of used your identity as a way to skip most of the process."

After saying this, she quickly looked around to see if anyone was too close to them, so as not to be overheard even if she'd whispered what she said.

Witch then bent down slightly, raised a hand towards Vigil's ear, and continued.

"You being a Child of War gives you certain special privileges that others can't get. Using that fact to our advantage, I just saved both of us another few week's worth of lines and waiting."

That last sentence sent a shiver down Vigil's spine.

Gods knew he didn't want to wait even another minute, much less weeks.

After he had heard her reasoning, he slowly shifted his gaze towards her and lifted up a thumb in approval.

By the time that their small chat had ended, the lady had returned from the room in the back, carrying with her a small silver band like the one Vigil had seen on Witches wrist, a small piece of paper, and a thumb stamp pad.

After she had set everything on her desk and sat down, the lady then proceeded to tell Vigil what he had to do in order to finish everything up and leave.

The first step was needing a set of fingerprints from both hands.

Hearing what he needed to do, Vigil took off both of his gauntlets and put all of his fingers onto the top of the thumb stamp pad.

He then put his now inked fingers onto the small piece of paper that was laid out in front of him.

As he did that, he was told about the next thing that he should do.

"Take the small wristband and tap a short rhythm on it. Make sure to never forget that rhythm, or else you'll have to go through the entirety of the real procedure the next time. Once you have done that, attach it to your wrist."

Vigil completed the next steps just as he was told.

The rhythm that he'd put in was one that his mother used to hum to him when putting him to sleep.

The boy then jolted in surprise as he soon felt a momentary pain in his wrist, directly where he'd put on the bracelet.

"Oh and you'll feel a little prick, but that's normal as it should automatically take a small drop of blood and register it in the device. Finally put your device up to this little thing here."

The woman said as she pointed towards a small U shaped device sitting on the table.

As he was doing this, she sounded out once more.

"While you are in a city or country of any kind, the wristband will connect you to the localized internet, making it into a portable communicator when necessary."

Vigil didn't even have the slightest idea as to what half of those words even meant.

'Guess I have more things to find out about later.'

While he was thinking this, the lady behind the counter concluded the process saying that they may now be on their way.

However, something about this whole procedure bemused Vigil, causing him to ask her a question of his own.

"Excuse me, but aren't you going to ask for a name or something like that?"

Looking up from the thin screen that sat at the corner of her desk, the woman took a second before responding.

"No, we don't do that anymore. Due to the amount of people that come in and out of here everyday, keeping names has become a hassle. So instead we just keep the information that has been registered into your wristband. With that being said, goodbye and have a pleasant rest of your day... Oh and kid, congratulations on making it here."

After bidding them farewell, the woman called out for the next person in line to come up.

While this was happening the duo had left the giant building and began walking towards yet another destination.

As Vigil was inspecting his wristband while walking, Witch had begun to speak, grabbing his attention.

"Kid, we have to talk. Now that you are an officially registered member of Mercy, what do you want to do?"
