Chapter 95: Sheng Lingxin's Frustration — The Beginning of the Reincarnation Trial
"Ye Ling, Cai'er, you've returned."
Sheng Yue stepped forward, his voice carrying a rare trace of gentleness.
For anyone else, that would have been unthinkable. Sheng Yue, the Ninth-Rank Hero, was infamous for his stern and intimidating demeanor — fierce toward everyone except Cai'er.
"It's been a while, Lord of the Holy Temple," Ye Ling said calmly. "Today I've brought Cai'er back to help her break through and complete the ninth level of the Reincarnation Trial. I hope it won't cause you any inconvenience."
"Inconvenience?" Sheng Yue blinked in mild surprise. "Of course not. If there's anything you need, just say the word. I'll do everything in my power to assist."
For anyone else, he might have considered it troublesome — even his own grandson, Sheng Lingxin, was no exception.
But this involved Cai'er.
How could that possibly be trouble?
In truth, Sheng Yue wished all his troubles were like this one. As long as he could repair the bond between Cai'er and their family, nothing else mattered.
"Then let Cai'er and me head directly into the Reincarnation Trial's space," Ye Ling said.
"Strength should be cultivated without delay — and that applies doubly for the Reincarnation Trial."
At that, Sheng Yue froze for a moment. So soon?
He had hoped to spend a little more time with Cai'er, but clearly, there was no chance of that now. Still, he couldn't bring himself to delay them.
"Follow me," Sheng Yue said finally, and without hesitation, led Ye Ling and Cai'er away.
Before long, they arrived at the Reincarnation Trial's inheritance site.
Ye Ling didn't waste a moment. Taking Cai'er's hand, he stepped with her into the teleportation array. A surge of spatial energy erupted, and in an instant, the two of them vanished from sight.
They had entered the trial.
Barely two minutes later, Sheng Lingxin came rushing in, breathless, with Lan Yanyu right behind him. His eyes were wide, filled with both urgency and curiosity, as he turned to Sheng Yue.
"Grandfather — where's Cai'er?"
"Didn't you say she'd returned?" Sheng Lingxin asked quickly, his breathing still uneven — an impressive sight for someone at the peak of the Seventh Rank, showing just how anxious he had been.
"She did return," Sheng Yue sighed, "but as soon as she did, she entered the Reincarnation Inheritance with that brat Ye Ling."
"I only managed to exchange a few words with Ye Ling. As for Cai'er, I didn't even get to say a single sentence to her. Truly ridiculous."
He let out a helpless sigh. After longing so many years to see his beloved great-granddaughter again, he hadn't even managed to speak a word to her before she was gone.
They had gone straight to business.
It was disheartening beyond words.
Still, Sheng Lingxin and Lan Yanyu had it even worse — they hadn't even seen Cai'er at all before she left.
And given their positions, waiting around was out of the question.
Sheng Lingxin was the Grand Marshal of the Exorcist Army, while Lan Yanyu served as his Deputy Commander. They had to remain constantly vigilant against the relentless demon legions.
Staying here to wait simply wasn't an option.
If not for the current stability of the military front, Sheng Lingxin and Lan Yanyu would never have rushed here so hastily.
"Cai'er…" Lan Yanyu sighed softly. She truly wished for reconciliation with her daughter, for the walls between them had long become unbearable.
But it was difficult — painfully so.
As a mother, she understood all too well the anger and resentment festering in Cai'er's heart. Yet despite that understanding, there was nothing she could do.
After a long moment of silent sorrow, she said no more and simply followed her husband, Sheng Lingxin, as they departed together.
They returned to the battlefield at the Exorcist Pass, resuming their duties as commander and deputy commander — holding the line against the ceaseless demon armies.
Meanwhile, in the Eternal Trial Grounds.
The place was filled with a suffocating aura of reincarnation — an endless cycle of death and rebirth that made the very air feel cold and dreadful.
Ordinarily, even a Ninth-Rank Hero like Sheng Yue would not dare to step foot here lightly. The overwhelming presence of reincarnation energy was too dangerous, even for him; to absorb too much would risk one's very soul.
But for Ye Ling and Cai'er, such energy was nothing.
Ye Ling possessed the Reincarnation Spirit Furnace himself, though he rarely relied on it.
As for Cai'er — she had lived with it since the age of three, cultivating and enduring endless torment under its power. To her, the aura of reincarnation was more familiar than her own breath. Without it, she would have felt incomplete.
They soon arrived at the same spot where they had trained before. Sitting cross-legged facing each other, Cai'er's small face flushed red as she met Ye Ling's handsome, steady gaze.
"Brother Ye Ling," she said softly, "let's begin the ninth layer of the trial."
"According to what you told me, the ninth trial is the most dangerous of all. My current strength is only barely enough to face it. Since that's the case, it's best we take the initiative."
Her voice was calm but resolute — she had clearly thought things through.
"Mm." Ye Ling nodded. "Activate the Reincarnation Spirit Furnace. Let's begin the trial. If we succeed, both of us will gain a tremendous increase in power."
The ninth layer of the Reincarnation Trial was known for its vast rewards.
If his estimation was correct, completing it would raise his pure spiritual power beyond four thousand points — enough to step into the Sixth Rank and condense a Spirit Aperture, truly solidifying his advancement.
Once he reached the Sixth Rank, his arsenal of upgradeable artifacts would evolve from Legendary-grade to Epic-grade.
The gap between the two was immense.
He would also be able to forge his Two-Word Spirit Armor in a far stronger state, perhaps even attempt Soul Forging — the next step in his craft.
And with the rise in his cultivation, his body would finally be capable of withstanding more of the Golden Dragon King's bloodline power.
For the past two years, he had deliberately refrained from breaking any of the remaining seals, waiting for the moment his endurance would be sufficient.
Now, that moment was finally here — the Sixth Rank was his next threshold.
Thinking of this, Ye Ling wasted no time. Above his head appeared a violet gourd, emanating a terrifying aura of slaughter — vast, boundless, and chilling to the soul.
Seeing this, Cai'er smiled sweetly. Without hesitation, her own Reincarnation Spirit Furnace manifested above her head, releasing waves of surging energy. The two furnaces resonated with one another, their auras intertwining and shaking the air.
Exchanging a brief look of mutual understanding, they began to guide their Spirit Furnaces in unison — stepping together into the ninth layer of the Reincarnation Trial.
