We're almost there...
The region where the Demons and humans are at war.
Along the way, Yulian was silent.
He followed Frieren all the way.
...
Era of Humans, Year 28.
Northern Lands.
Outskirts of Count Granat's territory.
Frieren, Yulian, Fern, and Stark arrived at a desolate Village.
Traces of war were everywhere in the Village, the houses were almost all burned down, the streets were dilapidated, and the villagers who once lived here had all disappeared.
Dead?
Ran away?
No one knew.
Did Aura do it?
How could she, how dare she disobey her own orders.
Yulian looked at the desolation around him and fell silent.
"Mistress Frieren..."
"This place looks very dangerous."
Fern cautiously scanned her surroundings.
Afraid that some unknown demon would suddenly appear from a corner and launch a surprise attack.
"The Demon attacked here."
Frieren walked ahead, saying calmly, but her eyes were scanning everywhere.
Even she didn't see such scenes often.
Village massacre?
Or did all the villagers move out before this place was occupied by the Demon?
She didn't know.
She only knew that the Demons she knew didn't seem to go to great lengths to cause random slaughter.
Towards the weak, as long as they didn't provoke the Demon, the Demon would ignore them.
This was also the only thing Frieren acknowledged about the Demon - they never bullied the weak who couldn't resist.
"Frieren, should we leave the Village first?"
Stark felt his whole body trembling.
He didn't want to stay in this bloody battlefield around him for another second.
He was scared, very scared!
"Don't be afraid..."
"This is the border area between the Central Lands and the Northern Lands, the number of the Demon shouldn't be so large that they could occupy a Village."
Frieren seemed relatively calm and made a judgment about the current situation.
"Did the Demon really do this?"
Fern bit her lip, looking disbelieving.
Yulian was the first Demon she knew, and the only one.
She held beautiful expectations for the Demon, hoping that the Demon could communicate and interact like Yulian.
This horrific scene, which Frieren said was done by the Demon, made Fern both believe and doubt.
Fern looked at Yulian, her slightly pleading gaze seemed to hope for the opposite answer from Yulian.
The answer that the Demon could communicate, not something like beasts!
"Sorry, Fern..."
Yulian shook his head.
There were traces of Demon combat here, and even fresh Demon mana remaining.
It seemed to be a battle between the Demon and the Northern Lands' army, no doubt.
"Do you know who did it?"
Frieren looked back at Yulian calmly.
"As a Demon, you should be very clear about who is active here, right?"
"Mistress Frieren!"
Fern said loudly, trying to stop Frieren from continuing.
"It's okay, Fern."
Yulian waved his hand, signaling Fern not to worry.
"Frieren, don't you think this is very impolite?"
Yulian looked at Frieren and said calmly.
"No, impolite..."
Frieren said hesitantly, paused, then nodded slightly.
"Sorry, Mr. Yulian."
"I just treated you as a companion and forgot your position."
Frieren pursed her lips, feeling a bit lost.
Being companions with the Demon, and then when encountering an unknown Demon, still asking the Demon beside her for clues about the newly appeared Demon...
Truly... how impolite...
Yulian quietly watched Frieren and sighed.
This slow-witted elf, sometimes truly makes people love and hate her.
"How troublesome..."
Stark looked at this scene and helplessly thumped his own head.
Fern also pursed her lips and didn't speak again.
The scene she worried about the most had appeared!
When the Demon stood on the opposite side of her group, how would Yulian choose?!
Their gazes gathered on Yulian, and Yulian clearly felt their eyes on him.
A sense of constraint arose in Yulian's heart.
How unpleasant...
Is this as far as it goes?
Yulian lowered his head and remained silent.
Time passed minute by minute, and silence spread among the few people.
The sky gradually darkened, and Fern suddenly raised her head, remembering the group's purpose for coming to the Village.
"Mistress Frieren..."
"Mr. Yulian..."
"Mr. Stark..."
"I see a relatively intact house up ahead, how about we rest here for today?"
Fern called out to each of them one by one, a smile appearing on her face.
"Yay!"
"Finally, we can find a place to get some good rest!"
Stark said happily, like a joyful tomato.
However, in Yulian's eyes, that happiness seemed a bit fake, as if it were acted out.
"Let's go, Yulian."
Frieren walked up to Yulian and gently patted Yulian's head.
"Mr. Yulian is a good Demon, different from other Demons."
"I know."
Frieren smiled faintly, but her eyes held a hint of sadness.
Is she thinking of things from the past...?
Yulian pursed his lips, nodded slightly to show understanding, then lowered his head and remained silent.
Frieren's Village, as an elf Village, suffered a brutal massacre during the former Demon King's reign.
Frieren's hatred for Demons also stemmed from this.
But what Yulian didn't expect was that even Frieren had learned to suppress her inner pain to comfort him...
Yulian was a bit surprised, this was something he had never thought of!
"Whoosh whoosh!"
Fern was the first to enter the house, she cautiously checked the house to make sure it was safe, then slightly cleaned it with Magic, after which the others followed and entered one after another.
"There happen to be two beds, so everyone will have a place to sleep."
Fern said somewhat happily.
The Northern Lands are different from the Central Lands, the Magic for wooden houses is maintained by using magical power.
In the Northern Lands, where demons are rampant at this moment, the Magic for wooden houses is clearly unusable, as it would expose their group to the sight of demons.
"It's just that the beds are a bit small, maybe two people will have to squeeze together."
A helpless smile appeared on Fern's face.
"Having a bed is already great!"
Stark, on the other hand, was the exact opposite, his eyes practically sparkling as he looked at the small wooden bed cleaned with Magic!
Roughing it for the past few days has indeed been quite hard on the boy!
More importantly, someone had to keep watch every night!
As a warrior, this glorious task basically fell on Stark's shoulders.
Only when Yulian occasionally couldn't bear it would he alternate shifts with him to keep watch.
"Gurgle gurgle~"
The bed problem was solved, but Frieren's stomach uncooperatively started rumbling.
"What's that strange sound?"
Stark looked around vigilantly.
Fern, however, gave Stark a helpless look.
"Mistress Frieren's stomach is hungry."
Frieren looked at the few people with slightly flushed cheeks and smiled.
"It's time to eat."
"Gurgle~ Gurgle!"
