Silver waited for Eli's response.
The three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.
Then nothing.
She stared at her phone, waiting for an answer. He always responded quickly. Always let her know what was happening.
Five minutes passed. Then ten.
Silver typed another message: eli? did you see my text?
Delivered. Read. No response.
That was weird. Unlike him.
She tried calling. It rang once then went to voicemail like he'd rejected the call.
Now she was worried.
Americus came back from the library around noon, arms full of printouts and looking triumphant.
"I've got more evidence. Metadata from three different screenshots proves they were edited after the original conversations." She dropped everything on her desk. "We're going to bury Carroway."
"That's great." Silver's voice was distracted. "Have you heard from Eli?"
"No. Why?"
"He's not responding to my texts. And he rejected my call." Silver showed her the messages. "That's not like him."
