Chapter 26 - Chapter 27 – When we looked up together

The evening sky over Sakura High was painted in deep hues of violet and indigo, streaked with faint clouds that glowed like threads of silver under the moonlight. The courtyard was alive with a gentle hum of excitement — students and teachers setting up telescopes, stringing fairy lights, and arranging chairs on the open field. The much-awaited Sakura Stargazing Event had finally arrived.

The Cosmic S.T.A.R Club, now larger with its two new members — Aira Mizunashi and Ren Ito — worked tirelessly, ensuring every last detail was perfect. The school rooftop had been transformed into a quiet dreamscape: lanterns glimmered softly, telescopes lined neatly along the edges, and a projector setup was ready to display the constellations on a giant white sheet fluttering gently in the breeze.

Beru stood near the railing, gazing at the sky with a serene smile. "It's so beautiful," she whispered, her voice almost lost in the wind.

Haruto walked up beside her, holding a box of snacks. "Beautiful, yeah," he murmured, glancing at her instead of the stars.

Beru turned to him, blinking curiously. "You mean the sky?"

He smiled faintly. "Yeah… the sky."

Her cheeks turned pink, and she quickly looked away, pretending to check the lanterns. Haruto chuckled softly and helped her hang the last few lights. The golden glow bathed their faces, wrapping them in warmth.

Across the field, Luna was arranging a series of starmaps on a table, with Souta assisting her. Or rather, trying to. He had managed to drop half the papers twice already, earning himself Luna's signature exasperated sigh.

"Souta, can you please be careful?" she scolded gently, bending down to gather the sheets.

He grinned sheepishly. "Sorry, Luna! My hands have a mind of their own when you're around."

Luna froze, her cheeks dusting red, but she hid it behind a calm expression. "Then perhaps your mind should focus elsewhere."

Souta laughed, scratching his head. "Right, right. I'll focus on… uh, the stars!"

Their playful exchange drew quiet giggles from Aira, who was helping nearby. "You two really do act like an old couple sometimes," she said teasingly.

Luna shot her a sharp look, while Souta's grin widened. "See? Even Aira agrees."

Aira chuckled and returned to setting up the telescope she had brought — a sleek, modern model with an automatic tracker. She had been shy when she first joined the club, but in just a few days, her calm energy and curiosity had melted into their group perfectly.

Meanwhile, Ren Ito, the other new member, was connecting the projector cables with Tadao. "You've done this kind of setup before, haven't you?" Tadao asked, impressed by Ren's precision.

Ren smiled modestly. "A few times. My father works in an observatory, so I've helped him now and then. It's nice to finally use that experience here."

Tadao nodded, his quiet eyes reflecting the soft lights around them. "We could really use someone like you in the club. You've got the steady kind of focus most of us lack."

Ren laughed lightly. "Except when I'm trying to untangle these wires."

As if on cue, one of the cables slipped loose and sent a small speaker tumbling down, startling them both. Tadao caught it just in time. They exchanged a relieved glance, then burst out laughing.

Moments like these — small and fleeting — made the night feel whole.

As the preparations ended, the club gathered at the center of the rooftop. Luna adjusted her glasses, gazing up at the stars that had now fully bloomed across the heavens. "Everyone," she began softly, "thank you for your hard work. Tonight isn't just about astronomy — it's about sharing our love for the sky, for discovery, and for each other."

Haruto placed his hands in his pockets, smiling. "That was surprisingly poetic, Luna."

She smirked lightly. "Even stars need words to shine brighter."

The group chuckled, and soon, students began to arrive. The rooftop filled with quiet chatter and gasps of awe as people peered through telescopes, watching distant galaxies and nebulae shimmer like dreams. Beru guided some younger students to view the constellations, her soft explanations making even the most complex cosmic patterns sound magical.

"See that one?" she said, pointing to the east. "That's Lyra — the constellation of the harp. Legend says its melody could reach heaven itself."

One of the little kids blinked up at her. "Do you think stars can really sing?"

Beru smiled, her eyes glowing in the lantern light. "I think… they already do. You just have to listen carefully."

Haruto, standing a few steps behind, found himself smiling at the sight. She had that rare gift — turning science into poetry, the infinite into something close to the heart.

Meanwhile, Souta was giving a dramatic "tour" of the sky, waving his hands like a performer. "And there! That's Orion! The great hunter! Or, as I like to call him, the original space warrior!"

Luna sighed, but a small smile curved her lips. "You're going to make the astronomy textbook cry, Souta."

"Hey," he said with a grin, "as long as I make the audience smile."

Aira clapped softly from the sidelines, and even Tadao chuckled. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, light, and the scent of cocoa and warm pastries the club had prepared for the guests.

Later that night, as the crowd thinned and quiet settled over the rooftop, the club members gathered near the edge, gazing up at the open sky together. The moon hung like a guardian above them, surrounded by countless glittering stars.

"It's strange," Beru said softly, "when I look at the stars now… I don't feel so small anymore."

Luna turned toward her, her eyes gentle. "Because you've found your place among them."

Beru smiled faintly. "Maybe… or maybe it's because I'm not alone."

Haruto reached out, taking her hand quietly. "You'll never be alone, Beru."

The others pretended not to notice, though Souta whispered to Luna, "They're at it again."

She elbowed him lightly, her cheeks flushed. "Hush. Let them have their moment."

Tadao, sitting near the railing, tilted his head back, letting the wind brush through his hair. "You know," he murmured, "maybe this is what peace feels like. Just… this. Friends, laughter, and a sky full of stars."

Ren nodded. "Yeah. The kind of moment you don't need to photograph to remember forever."

The group fell silent after that, the quiet stretching warm and deep, filled only by the soft rustle of leaves and the faint hum of the night. Somewhere in the distance, a shooting star streaked across the heavens — bright, brief, and breathtaking.

Beru gasped softly. "Did you see that?"

Haruto smiled. "Yeah. Looks like even the sky's celebrating with us."

Aira clasped her hands together, whispering a wish, while Souta grinned and said, "I wished for free snacks next week."

Everyone laughed, the sound echoing softly into the night.

When the event finally ended, and the guests had left, the Cosmic S.T.A.R Club stayed behind to clean up. Lanterns were gently dimmed, telescopes folded, and papers stacked neatly away. Yet none of them were in a hurry to leave.

Beru leaned against the railing, watching the last glimmer of starlight fade into dawn's faint glow. "Tonight felt special," she whispered.

Haruto nodded beside her. "It was."

"Do you think," she asked, "we'll ever see another night like this?"

He smiled, his voice quiet. "Maybe not exactly like this. But as long as we're together… there'll always be more stars to see."

The others joined them one by one — Luna, Souta, Tadao, Aira, and Ren — forming a quiet circle beneath the paling sky.

No speeches. No grand words. Just the warmth of friendship, the promise of tomorrow, and the stars that still glimmered faintly above — a reminder of how far they'd come and how much brighter they'd yet to shine.

As the first rays of dawn touched the horizon, Beru looked around at her friends, her heart swelling with gratitude.

This — this was what she had always dreamed of.

And somewhere high above Sakura High, the stars themselves seemed to whisper back their silent blessing —

A night well spent, beneath hearts that shine.
