Chapter 16 - Into the clouds

We arrived at a bright blue car after walking past many curious Muggles. Ron tapped the trunk a few times and it popped open. Shoving all of our stuff inside, Ron gestured to the car doors.

"Are you sure we should be doing this?" Ginny asked in a quiet tone, her voice squeaking slightly as her eyes set on Harry for a second and then quickly blinked away.

Ron just nodded, shoving the trunk door closed. "Don't worry about it, we've been to Hogwart before, we know what we're doing," he claimed confidently while looking at Harry.

Harry grimaced slightly and muttered under his breath. "Speak for yourself."

I watched the exchange and rolled my eyes. I had no idea if this was normal or not so it didn't make a difference for me, but Ginny seemed really unsure about this. I looked at her and how worried she looked, then glanced back at Ron.

"What if the barrier fixed itself?" I asked, "What if your parents are on their way through and just see that their car is gone?"

The words felt strange coming from me. I mean I didn't know much about the Wizarding World and here I was talking about a barrier fixing itself.

"I dunno why the platform sealed itself, but it's not just going to open back up." Ron said while rolling his eyes. "The car's the safest option."

I sighed as Harry moved to put his owl in the back seat and he and Ron climbed into the front.

"C'mon, Ginny. Get in," said Ron as he shut his door.

I followed Ginny into the car, squeezing in next to Harry's owl who started hooting indignantly. Ginny cracked a small smile at the bright white owl, momentarily hiding her nervousness.

"Check that no one's watching," Ron muttered to Harry as he tapped the ignition with his wand.

Nodding, Harry stuck his head out of the window and looked around. Looking out of my own window, I saw that the street ahead was empty.

"Okay, you're good." Harry muttered, pulling his head back into the car.

Ron leaned over the dashboard and quickly pressed a small silver button... then the car vanished and so did we.

Okay, so Ron had already mentioned turning the car invisible... but wow! I can't even see myself!

I still felt like myself with my hair along my shoulders and my back pressed against the car's seat... but I couldn't see any of it.

"Well this is beyond weird." I muttered quietly.

I couldn't tell if anyone heard me though because just at that moment a loud popping sound started. It shook the car for a second before everything reappeared again. Ginny, Harry, Ron, and the car... I could see them all.

"Um..." I started with my mouth hanging slightly open.

"Uh-oh" Ron said while shrinking back into his seat and jabbing at the Invisibility button. "It's faulty sometimes..."

Harry joined in the jabbing and the car vanished again... only to reappear a moment later.

I looked over at Ginny and found that her eyes had widened significantly in an expression of fear and uneasiness.

"It'll be fine, Ginny." I told her quietly, "It's not like the entire car's shut off."

Ginny looked back at me for a second before looking down at the smoky and glittering ground of London. "But Muggles are going to see us..." she said, her voice extremely soft and almost impossible to hear.

Um... well it's safe to say that I didn't think of that...

I bit my lip and looked down at the dirty buildings and twisted streets below us.

At the beginning of the summer, how would I have reacted if I saw a car flying above me... I mean how are you supposed to react when you see something so abnormal and so impossible...

"Erm... Ron-" I started, attempting to ask him how to make the Muggles not see us, but was completely cut off as the accelerator was slammed and we shot straight forward into a collection of clouds.

Guess that answers that...

"Now what?" Harry asked, looking around him at the fog around us.

"Well..." Ron started, squinting to see in front of him, "We need to see the train to know which direction to go in. I'll just..." he trailed off and dropped quickly beneath the clouds.

I was forcefully jerked forward, and Ginny let out a short yelp and clutched her seat. Harry's owl screeched as her cage hit the seats in front of it.

"I can see it!" Harry shouted in excitement, "Right ahead!"

Looking down, I saw the Hogwarts Express below the car, a cloud of smoke shooting from it like a long twisting snake.

Glancing at a compass on the dashboard, Ron tilted his head slightly. "Due north. We'll just have to check it every half hour or so. Hold on."

Jerking the steering wheel, we shot up back into the clouds then threw them into a blaze of sunlight.

I looked out the window at the bright blue sky I now saw before me. The car was hovering over a pocket of bright and fluffy clouds, and the sun shone so bright that it sprinkled the clouds in endless light.

"All we've got now to worry about is airplanes," Ron said while laughing at his own joke, causing Harry to join in.

Ginny and I looked at each other and I shook my head while smiling at the completely crazy, but really awesome, flight we had just gone through.

And who else can say that they've flown in a flying car...
