"Mutagen!"
Dr. Curt Connors couldn't hide his shock. His eyes snapped open, filled with a mix of complexity and awe.
Looking at the turtles and the rat before him—creatures whose mutations mirrored his own lizard form—his gaze flickered with excitement he could no longer suppress.
"Mutagen… it was O'Neil's work!"
"He died in a fire over a decade ago, and all of his research was thought to be destroyed. I didn't expect… that he actually succeeded before his death!"
Connors murmured to himself.
In front of him, Anton raised an eyebrow. From the sound of it, Connors seemed to know April's father—Professor O'Neil, the man who had once worked for the TCRI Corporation.
Still, given that both men were top experts in genetic bioengineering, it wasn't surprising they'd crossed paths.
"The turtles and the rat… they were test subjects for the mutagen!"
Connors' gaze suddenly locked on the upright turtles and the cross-legged rat, Splinter. "With mutagen, I might be able to perfect my gene serum—to create a side-effect-free human enhancement compound… Batman, is that your goal?"
"It's just a coincidence."
Anton's tone was indifferent. He hadn't originally planned to use Connors—he'd intended to find someone else to study the mutagen, to help Norman Osborn recover and cure his family's hereditary illness. After all, the Marvel world was never short on geniuses.
However, S.H.I.E.L.D. had refused to cooperate, and Hawkeye's attitude had been far too hostile. That left Anton with little reason to be polite.
So, he decided to keep Connors.
If Connors truly could develop a safe "bio-gene serum" and "human enhancement compound," it would be a contribution to society.
"From now on, this will be your cell—and your lab."
Anton said coolly, "I'll provide everything you need. Your only task is to develop a safe bio-gene serum that can heal disabilities, and a side-effect-free enhancement compound. The turtles and the rat will keep an eye on you."
After a pause, his voice grew heavier.
"Norman's split personality was caused by you. In other words, you share responsibility for the Green Goblin incident. Connors, as Spider-Man said—if you truly are a good man, then redeem yourself. This is your last chance."
Having said that, Anton stood up and nodded toward Splinter. "It's getting late. I should go."
"Alright."
Splinter nodded. "As for the Foot Clan, we'll follow through with what we agreed upon."
"Then I'm leaving Norman and Connors in your care."
Anton glanced at Norman Osborn—still unconscious and gravely injured—then at the excited Dr. Connors, who was far too intrigued to refuse the offer. Turning away, Anton entered the tunnel leading out of the sewers.
Soon after, he deactivated his Batman form, lifted the manhole cover, and climbed up from the grimy underground.
The contrast made him sigh.
Keeping a dojo clean in such a filthy place was no small feat. For those four turtles and the rat who raised them, life was anything but easy.
And yet, even in those harsh conditions, Splinter had trained Donatello—the purple-masked turtle who was both a tech genius and a scholar.
A true case of "noble sons born from humble origins," Anton mused with a faint smile.
He rubbed his chin. Indeed, there was hardly a family humbler than one of sewer-dwelling turtles and a rat.
Splinter had educated himself into a ninja master—and trained four mutant turtles into formidable warriors. "Martial artists" might even be the more accurate term.
Afterward, Anton made his way to the vicinity of the Oscorp building and contacted Eddie.
He was about to discuss plans for dealing with the Foot Clan when Eddie and Phil suddenly dragged him into an alleyway—each of them carrying a huge metal case and grinning from ear to ear.
"What's in the box?"
Anton frowned, puzzled by their excitement. "What did you two find?"
"I turned into Venom and snuck Phil into Oscorp," Eddie said, smirking. "You'll never guess what we found!"
He threw open the case—and Anton's eyes widened.
Inside were a glider, a set of Green Goblin armor, several pumpkin bombs, and razor-sharp bat-shaped blades.
In short—Norman Osborn's backup Green Goblin gear.
"We found these in Norman's office!"
Phil said excitedly, "Boss, Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin! This is breaking news! With this evidence, we can expose him—Oscorp's CEO is a supervillain!"
"That kind of story needs to be handled carefully. Oscorp's shareholders make the Life Foundation look like amateurs…"
Anton shook his head, disappointment flickering in his eyes. "Besides, Norman's already in my custody. His situation is complicated—some experimental serum damaged his mind and split his personality. The Green Goblin is just one of those fragments. So no—we can't just blast this out like usual."
He paused, then smiled slightly. "Of course, your bonus will still be paid."
"Boss, you can keep the bonus," Phil said with a grin, glancing at Eddie. "But… can I keep this suit?"
Anton blinked.
Only then did he realize—Eddie and Phil hadn't been after a story at all. What they wanted was the Green Goblin's gear.
"I tried it on—it fits me perfectly!"
Phil said eagerly. "You guys are all superheroes. I want to be one too! And… I want to join the Justice League! Please, boss—give me a chance!"
Anton looked amused. "Eddie, this was your idea, wasn't it?"
"Come on, Anton," Eddie said shamelessly. "Phil's been through a lot with us. He deserves a spot on the team. Besides, we could use someone handling logistics during missions, right?"
Anton sighed, but his lips curved into a small smile.
"Fine. Stay."
He turned to Phil. "If you really want to join us, you'll have to work twice as hard. Whether at the Daily Bugle or with the Justice League—you'll need to prove yourself."
"I will!"
Phil's eyes gleamed with excitement.
"Oh, and one more thing."
Anton grinned. "You'll need a cool name. When you finally show up on the scene, you can't be nameless."
"How about… The Fiend?"
Phil blurted out, clearly having thought about it for a while.
Anton chuckled softly. "The Fiend, huh? Not bad at all."
