You could even say it would directly affect the future population of the entire continent.
But promoting it wasn't gonna be easy.
Farmers tended to stick to what they knew. Very few would be willing to take a risk and plant something new.
If farmers were like that, forget about the nobles who controlled vast amounts of land.
If farmers' yields dropped and they didn't have enough left over after taxes, they could starve to death. Even knowing that, not many were willing to take the risk and make sudden changes. And the nobles?
If they took a risk switching crops and it failed, they'd lose a whole year's income. They wouldn't be able to keep throwing parties or invite as many nobles. Their social activities would take a hit, maybe even drain their resources.
But if they didn't change anything, they'd still live happily, just like they had for hundreds, even thousands of years. No difference at all.
