Chapter 177: The Demon Race Attacks Again
Kurtz let out a long sigh as he watched Serie's retreating figure disappear through the doorway, uncomfortably aware of the sweat on his back.
That emergency response just now was even more mentally taxing than dealing with a group of demons.
"I finally managed to fool her." He wiped away non-existent cold sweat, still feeling lingering fear.
The excuse of raising her as a daughter, even he felt he was talking nonsense. But somehow it had actually fooled Serie.
His feelings for Flamme were simply a desire to witness the legendary magic user from history, without any personal selfish desires mixed in.
The reason he was so good to her was just human nature. Like when people see something cute and subconsciously pay more attention to and care more for it.
He just hadn't expected Serie to misunderstand it all.
Kurtz shook his head, dismissing the jumbled thoughts.
The most urgent task was bidding farewell to Baling. He stood up and quickly walked out of the room, but he didn't know that Serie hadn't gone far. She stood in the corridor shadows, watching him leave.
Her golden eyes didn't move away until his figure was completely out of sight, still carrying unresolved confusion and a hint of vigilance that even she herself hadn't noticed.
"Daughter, huh?" She repeated the word in an almost inaudible whisper.
Why would humans consider a non-blood-related existence as their own child?
Serie couldn't understand.
Human emotions were indeed complex and difficult to comprehend.
But for some reason, she vaguely felt that her most important thing was being stolen, or perhaps had already been taken away by someone.
This feeling made her very uncomfortable.
'My most important thing…'
Is it magic? Or something else?
Serie wasn't sure either.
Time passed in oppressive silence as the night slowly gave way to dawn.
On the other side, Kurtz recalled all the information about the current El Country Emperor, El Fidel, which he had learned from Baling.
With his abilities, he might be a decent ruler who maintains the status quo in peacetime.
But in the current situation, where the Demon Race is advancing and internal strife is beginning among humans, can he hold onto this foundation? Can he protect that holy sword?
Kurtz did not dare to gamble.
Demons are cunning creatures. Once they disguise themselves, it's hard to recognize them.
The more he thought, the stronger the unease in his heart grew.
A millennium of peace seemed to have made humanity, and even the entire continent, too complacent.
Although in this life, due to his involvement, the Elf race had not become as rare as in the original story, decline was inevitable.
The sky began to lighten with the first hint of dawn appearing on the distant horizon.
The Dwarf King Baling was busy with the complex tasks of post-war reconstruction. Upon hearing that Kurtz had come to bid farewell, he immediately put down his work.
"Baling," Kurtz didn't exchange many pleasantries and went straight to the point, "Thank you for your generous hospitality, but we must set off."
The smile on Baling's face instantly froze. "Leave? Now? Lord Kurtz, why is this? Is it because we were not hospitable enough?"
He nervously rubbed his rough hands, eyes filled with confusion.
Lady Serie is currently the strongest presence in their city. If they leave, what if the Demon Race returns…
"No, Baling, you misunderstand." Although he really wanted to complain about the 'Lord Kurtz' title, Kurtz still held back and quickly said, "It's just that for so long, there have been no signs of the Demon Race here, and we have received news from the Southern Unified Empire and El Country that the Demon Race seems to have appeared there as well."
Baling frowned. "I have heard that the Demon Race appeared openly within the Southern Unified Empire."
As a city that has dealings with El Country, Baling also had some understanding of the situation there. Apparently, the intelligence he received was more detailed.
"That's troublesome," Kurtz emphasized. "The Demon Race is very cunning. During this time, they haven't shown any abnormal behavior. I'm worried that their true target isn't here, but somewhere else, so we must hurry there to confirm the situation."
Baling saw the unprecedented solemnity on Kurtz's face and knew that he was determined to leave.
He sighed. "I understand, Lord Kurtz. Our Dwarf Kingdom will never forget your kindness to White Fortress. Please be sure to be careful."
"Okay, I understand."
Baling was about to say more and arrange a farewell when a sudden, urgent report interrupted him.
"Baling!!!"
A dwarf warrior rushed in, not even bothering to salute, shouting hoarsely: "It's bad! A large number of monsters have appeared outside the fortress, and there are even figures of the Demon Race!"
"What!?"
Baling's huge body swayed, almost losing his balance. He didn't expect the Demon Race actually to return, and this time, the scout even mentioned the figures of the Demon Race.
This meant that this monster army would be even harder to deal with.
Kurtz's heart tightened.
He also didn't expect that just as he decided to leave, these demons would launch an attack.
Is it a coincidence? Or did they sense something?
"How many demons are there?" Kurtz stepped forward, staring intently at the panicked dwarf warrior.
The dwarf, affected by Kurtz's aura, composed himself slightly and reported quickly, panting: "There are at least twelve leading demons, and three of them are particularly large, and the magical aura on them is also stronger than the other demons."
Three Greater Demons.
Clearly, these demons were serious. Unlike last time, this was an organized, premeditated, true siege army.
Immense pressure, like a tangible weight, pressed down on Baling's shoulders.
This city alone simply could not withstand this monster army.
Although they had already sent a plea for help to the Dwarf Kingdom, it would take time for the other side to dispatch troops.
Now, they could only place their hopes on Kurtz—or rather, on the legendary magic user Serie behind him.
Kurtz took a deep breath, and all sorts of thoughts in his mind were instantly replaced by anger.
Luring the tiger away from its mountain? Or stalling for time?
Very good.
No matter which it was, he didn't mind utterly crushing these ignorant fellows in front of him first, and letting Schlacht see what a painful price his plan would entail.
"Baling!" Kurtz's voice carried a reassuring and powerful confidence. "It seems our farewell will have to be postponed slightly. Since these ignorant fellows have come again, we will help you completely crush them!"
"Lord Kurtz!" Baling's voice trembled with excitement. "Thank you for your help! All the soldiers of White Fortress will fight alongside you!"
The heavy sound of the horn once again echoed throughout White Fortress.
And Kurtz's figure disappeared from his original spot. Using spatial magic, he appeared directly above the entire city.
From here, he could overlook the entire battlefield.
