Chapter 164: Bringing the Elf Down to Earth

"What's different?" Serie was somewhat confused by what Kurtz meant by "different."

From her perspective, there was nothing wrong with her allowing Flamme to use hatred as motivation.

Flamme wanted revenge, wanted to become stronger, and as her teacher, Serie should fulfill that wish. Moreover, she looked forward to the day Flamme became stronger.

Wasn't the role of a magic teacher simply to ensure their student became powerful enough?

"Because she's still young!" Kurtz's tone grew heavier. "Flamme, she's only ten years old! Her mind is far from mature!"

Serie had never interacted with children, let alone human children, so she didn't know how troublesome it was to cultivate a human child's personality and their very being.

The only child she had interacted with might have been Aura, hundreds of years ago.

But Aura had her parents and didn't need Serie to teach her in that regard.

Serie only needed to teach her magic; Aura's parents were responsible for nurturing her personality and her very being.

In truth, Kurtz also didn't know how to raise a human child, as he had no experience. However, he would act based on knowledge from books he had stumbled upon in his previous life.

After all, no one is born a parent.

Although it sounded a bit strange to say, Flamme wasn't his child, but Kurtz didn't mind learning and helping Flamme become the powerful mage he remembered.

And Serie, lacking this knowledge, naturally wouldn't consider such issues.

"Flamme's life has just begun, yet it's already enveloped by hatred. Her world, at the very time she most needs guidance to understand it, has been forcibly given one goal: revenge!"

Kurtz took a step forward and firmly pressed Serie's shoulders.

"Serie, since you have become her teacher, her guide on the path of magic, we must not only impart magic to her but also help her use this power correctly. Do you wish for Flamme to one day become a bringer of disaster to this world?"

Hearing Kurtz's last sentence, Serie's eyes instantly lit up, but under his gaze, she still spat out the words "I don't want to" through gritted teeth.

She thought it would be very interesting if that day truly came.

For her student to become a bringer of disaster to this world—nothing could be more interesting than that.

But what Kurtz said also made a lot of sense, causing her to fall into a dilemma.

After all, from her perspective, for Kurtz's sake, her love for war could be completely suppressed.

Who told this man he seemed to dislike war?

"You teach her that power is for slaughter, that magic is the most efficient tool of destruction. Against demons, there's no problem, but this is only a partial truth. Power can also be used for protection, and magic is a path to the world's essence; it encompasses everything, not just destruction."

"If we only teach her to seek revenge, to strengthen herself through hatred, then the world in her eyes will forever only reflect hatred and destruction."

"She might become an incredibly powerful avenger, a terrifying Godslayer for the demons, yes, but..."

"But she will also lose the possibility of experiencing other colors of life! Her heart might forever be consumed by hatred!"

Kurtz's tone carried an almost pleading quality: "Flamme's future holds infinite possibilities, Serie, but this one possibility is not the outcome I wish to see."

"So I want to guide her...guide her towards a perfect outcome, because, after all, I am her teacher."

Kurtz's words echoed in Serie's ears, each word weighing heavily on her heart.

She stood there quietly, her eyes reflecting Kurtz's figure and her own thoughts.

The expression on her face seemed to show a subtle, almost imperceptible loosening.

Over a thousand years, Serie had taught many beings.

She imparted knowledge, taught them the magic they wished to learn, and pushed the potential of every talented individual to its limit, making them powerful mages.

She had never considered that the role of a teacher carried such a heavy responsibility beyond that.

She was accustomed to viewing the death of life from an elf's perspective.

Human life, in her eyes, was inherently short; it was already difficult for it to bloom with dazzling light.

Flamme's hatred was her motivation, and using this motivation to make her quickly grow strong was, in Serie's opinion, the most efficient method.

As for whether her heart would become cold and twisted because of it?

Perhaps that was the price she had to pay for power.

After all, in Serie's long life, she had heard too many examples of people being consumed by power; she had long grown accustomed to it.

But Kurtz was different.

He was human; he understood the complex emotions and possibilities contained within that short life.

He saw Flamme not just as a remarkably talented magic apprentice, but as a little girl who needed his guidance.

His definition of a teacher was from a human perspective, caring for the growth of another human.

This perspective was one Serie had never considered.

She recalled Kurtz's teachings to Flamme, which now stood out with striking clarity, highlighted by his words.

The healing magic. The wounded fawn. The quiet moments of gentleness woven between the lessons of destruction.

Time seemed to freeze in the clearing for a long while.

Serie's gaze shifted from Kurtz's face, the indifference in her eyes gradually disappearing, replaced by a look of confusion and contemplation.

Ultimately, she neither refuted nor agreed.

After all, Flamme was the first person Kurtz was willing to teach, someone who could simultaneously receive training from both a Godslayer and a Saint.

And her talent was worthy of such treatment.

Kurtz's words alone couldn't fully convince Serie, because to her, simply teaching these people magic was already benevolent enough; she had no obligation to care for them like children.

But since this man had taken the initiative to speak, let Flamme be an exception.

Serie nodded, her movement so slight it was almost imperceptible.

Then she spoke, her voice carrying a complex emotion that even she found unfamiliar: "...I understand."

Only a few simple words.

Even without explicit agreement, Kurtz understood the meaning contained within them.

This was the first time Serie truly began to contemplate the deeper meaning of the word "teacher" beyond simply imparting power.

It was a crack in the veneer of her long life's detached emotions, the beginning of a change.

Kurtz looked at the contemplative light in Serie's eyes and understood.

Changing the mindset of an elf who had existed for thousands of years would certainly not happen overnight.

But to make her start thinking, to begin to shake that elf mindset, was already a huge step forward.

He believed that time would change everything, and it would also bring this ever-transcendent elf down to earth.

And then, his opportunity would also arrive.
