"You promised you wouldn't hurt him," Luck said, his voice low and steady. He was trying not to betray the anger and anguish he felt inside.
Kai was lying on the floor, a pool of blood around him, the couple had just left him there and climbed up the stairs. The children had walked out of their rooms to the sight.
A laugh echoed around the hall. "We didn't," the woman said flippantly. "The wolves did. Besides, he walked in himself."
"Why would he walk into a cage of wolves? He's just a child." Luke snapped, stepping forward.
The man's expression fell. "Watch your tone, young man." his gaze settled on the other children who were gathered around Kai. The threat was obvious.
Luke stepped back and lowered his head.
"He said he wanted to make us proud," the man continued with a shrug. "And he did."
