The next morning, Kai wandered down the stairs and into the kitchen in search of food. His curls were messy from sleep, and his eyes were still drowsy.
"Good morning," came a calm voice from the table.
Kai looked up and stopped.
Adrian sat at the small kitchen table, neatly dressed, eating a honey-covered pancake.
"Morning," Kai mumbled.
He opened the fridge, grabbed a loaf of bread and a jar of jam, then picked a spoon from the drawer before plopping into the seat opposite Adrian. He held a slice of bread in one hand and used the other to scoop jam directly into his mouth between bites.
Adrian stared at the teen in front of him.
Kai looked up. "What? You have your own food."
"I've just never seen anyone eat bread and jam like you."
"Well, now you have," Kai said with a shrug.
A soft meow echoed from beneath the table, a grey cat curled around Kai's leg, rubbing against him.
He looked down and smiled. "You must be Lulu."
