Chapter 201 - Chapter 201: Clearing the Name

The information provided by UDI had narrowed down the scope for the police. If the deceased was a late-stage cancer patient who had recently scheduled treatment, they only needed to check the nearby hospitals.

This allowed the police to quickly confirm the identity of the deceased.

By checking hospital by hospital, the identity of the deceased and his family situation also surfaced.

The deceased was named Kobayashi, Kenji, seventy-one years old, late-stage cancer, had undergone surgery. The police had already contacted the family and were starting to gather more information from the family and the hospital.

And when the bereaved family learned that the body was here, they immediately rushed over.

The bereaved family member was Kobayashi's wife, five years younger than the deceased. She was uneasy upon entering UDI, and when she saw the stitched-up body, she trembled as if she might collapse at any moment.

"I'm sorry, I left you alone in the end..."

Kobayashi's wife was very sad, her words and expression filled with grief.

However, she did not intend to take the body back, saying she would wait for her daughter to return from Osaka.

This caused great confusion, but Kobayashi's wife did not listen to UDI's persuasion and left after seeing the body.

"That's strange."

Dr. Misumi Misumi Mikoto felt suspicious.

His husband's body was here, but she didn't seem to want to take it back.

"...Could it be that the murderer is that Mrs. Kobayashi?"

Aki Tomoya remembered Dr. Misumi Misumi Mikoto's deduction that the murderer was likely a first-time offender and possibly female.

"Don't say such creepy things. While it's possible, but..."

Not only did she kill her husband, who was in the late stages of cancer, but she also dismembered him. The seemingly gentle Mrs. Kobayashi didn't look like such a crazy person.

However, her actions did seem a bit abnormal.

Just as they were discussing, Detective Mori Mauri Tadaharu from Nishi-Musashino Police Station rushed to UDI again.

"Has the deceased's family member, Mrs. Kobayashi, been here?"

It seemed the police were looking for Mrs. Kobayashi everywhere.

Everyone looked at each other, their hearts feeling somewhat unsettled.

The possibility of someone else committing the crime couldn't be ruled out, and the police also had reason to suspect the deceased's family.

Because after finding the hospital where the deceased, Kobayashi, Kenji, was treated, the police learned that although the deceased had undergone surgery and chemotherapy there, the treatment costs were delayed every time.

Considering the deceased's long-term serious illness treatment, it was highly possible that the family could no longer bear the mental and economic burden and thus had a motive for murder. The deceased's wife was also included as a suspect.

"The worst possible scenario."

Aki Tomoya frowned, thinking.

This could be said to be the worst deduction.

Mauri Tadaharu had contacted the deceased's family this morning. After learning the full situation at the hospital in the afternoon, he had doubts about the deceased's family. He and his team did not find Mrs. Kobayashi at the deceased's home.

Now, upon learning that Mrs. Kobayashi had already left UDI, he immediately turned back.

"I'll go out for some fresh air..."

Aki Tomoya could understand the police's logic in suspecting her, but he felt a little uncomfortable.

Could the unbearable economic and mental burden really break a person who seemed so gentle?

The police's reasonable suspicion was actually quite frightening.

Even though he had similar suspicions before, he still found it somewhat difficult to accept such a possibility.

"Aki-kun is still very young. I've worked at the autopsy office for twenty-four years and have encountered many such cases. It's hard for many people to live in this world, and many are driven to despair."

It was somewhat surprising that someone like Sakamoto Makoto could say such profound words.

After all, he was an old veteran who had worked in this field for so many years and had encountered too many cases.

"But Aki-kun is different. He has the guts to come here and is a student from University of Tokyo, Faculty of Science III. His future prospects are boundless."

The more he saw misfortune, the more he, being fortunate, cherished everything he had now.

UDI Research Institute, unnatural death. Sometimes, the truth can be frustrating.

...

In the afternoon of July 27th, the police found Mrs. Kobayashi, who had attempted suicide, at the home of the deceased, Kobayashi, Kenji.

After sending her for emergency treatment, the police began searching her house.

However, nothing was found in Mrs. Kobayashi's house that could indicate she had killed her husband.

There was only her final suicide note, filled with despair and a message for her daughter who was working part-time in Osaka and had not yet returned.

She hoped her daughter could bury her and her husband's ashes together.

In the morning of July 28th, Mrs. Kobayashi woke up and, when questioned by the police, denied killing her husband.

However, as she was still a suspect and they feared she might attempt suicide again, she was placed under police surveillance.

During this time, Aki Tomoya took some time off. The Director approved it, thinking he might have been affected by something recently.

On July 30th, he returned to UDI.

"I went to investigate on my own. Mrs. Kobayashi had been working part-time during that period to pay for Mr. Kobayashi's medical expenses. The reason she didn't discover her husband's disappearance was that she thought Mr. Kobayashi was still in the hospital. After Mr. Kobayashi disappeared, every time the hospital called their home, no one answered."

Because it was somewhat unacceptable, Aki Tomoya went to investigate on his own for two days.

He inquired about where Mrs. Kobayashi worked and confirmed that she had an alibi.

The police would likely find out about this as well, and Mrs. Kobayashi might have already been cleared of suspicion.

"Oh, right, this morning, I saw two newly delivered letters outside the Kobayashi residence. One was written by Mr. Kobayashi before he passed away, and the other was unsigned. Both were handed over to the police."

As Aki Tomoya said this, he let out a sigh of relief.

If it had truly been Mr. Kobayashi's wife, he would have found it somewhat difficult to accept.

"This morning, the Director said that the police thanked us at UDI for providing leads and asked who it was. So, it was you! You took time off to be a detective?"

Dr. Toukairin looked at Aki Tomoya in surprise.

What he did was astonishing. She had thought this University student took time off because he was affected by something, but it turned out he went to find the truth himself.

Dr. Misumi Misumi Mikoto also praised him with admiration, saying, "Forensic medicine truly needs people like Aki-kun who are dedicated to the truth!"

"Dr. Misumi, you flatter me. I just couldn't accept the horrifying reality. Saying it was for the truth, it was actually just to make myself feel better."

Feeling ashamed, he shook his head. He wasn't looking for the truth, but rather a truth that he could accept.

A daughter in Osaka, an old couple living together in Tokyo, the husband seriously ill, the wife working illegally to pay for medical expenses. Doesn't this story sound touching?

And if it were truly like that, with the wife unable to bear the burden and killing her husband in a breakdown, that would be pitiful, lamentable, and tragic...

"I took the liberty of reading Mr. Kobayashi's will, which just arrived. The letter said that he asked someone to kill him."

Mr. Kobayashi was instigated and agreed to let someone kill him.
