Cherreads

Chapter 199 - Chapter 199: Cicadas Chirping, People Breaking Down

The cicadas chirped incessantly, making people feel annoyed.

The enthusiasm of summer vacation is directly proportional to the temperature.

When enthusiasm is at its peak, the humid and hot temperature of Tokyo will teach you a lesson.

Once the rainy season passes, the temperature climbs steadily. In this kind of weather, air conditioning is the best companion.

Aki Tomoya arrived at UDI in the morning, enjoying the air conditioning in the office. Work hadn't started yet, and he was chatting with people in the office.

"The lawsuit concerning Tanshoto should have been settled out of court, right?"

He was talking about the first body he encountered, which was related to a medical dispute.

The family of the deceased, Tanshoto, eventually sued the hospital, focusing on the patient's and family's right to information, and whether the hospital was negligent in clearly explaining potential risks during treatment to the family.

Because of this matter, UDI's findings and the hospital's original death certificate were presented in court.

"Aki-kun is still following that case? I remember Dr. Sakamoto went there once because of this," Misumi Mikoto turned to look at him.

"Well, the lawyer who took on this case is a lecturer at my friend's University."

Aki Tomoya only paid attention to this matter because he had discussed it with Kato Megumi.

The lecturer focused on the need for society to pay attention to lidocaine allergies, using condemning and regretful language in court to attack the hospital.

However, even so, the family of the deceased faced significant pressure and were more willing to settle out of court to receive compensation from the hospital and end the matter.

The fact that Kato Megumi could obtain such firsthand information shows that she is quite popular at University.

"An out-of-court settlement is also good, there's not much benefit in dragging it out with the hospital."

Misumi Mikoto felt that an out-of-court settlement was understandable.

After all, considering the practical situation, after the loss of the main laborer and pillar of the family, the hospital's compensation could alleviate things considerably, and continuing to sue didn't offer much optimism.

Reaching a settlement with the hospital can be considered a good outcome.

However, settling so quickly, perhaps that was the goal from the beginning.

Just as they were chatting, Director Kamikura Yasuo suddenly walked into the office and said seriously, "New job, we need to go to the scene. It's a police request."

After speaking, he paused and looked at the staff in the office.

Chutang Gang, as usual, with Aki Tomoya, only had two people in the office. As for San Cheng Class, well, there was no recorder, so also two people.

"Dr. Misumi, can I ask your class to go? If possible, can Aki-kun also help assist?"

"Huh, it's probably a murder scene, is that okay?"

As soon as the Director finished speaking, Dr. Toukairin asked.

UDI's budget comes partly from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and partly from the Ministry of Police, so when there's an official request, there's no room for delay.

And police requests are likely related to murder cases.

Furthermore, they have to go to the scene, and it's hard to say what the situation there will be like.

Before coming to UDI, these people were battle-hardened and long used to various murder scenes and victims with different causes of death.

Although Aki Tomoya had been at UDI for a week and quickly got used to the work environment, this was his first time at a murder scene.

"...I'm mentally prepared."

Aki Tomoya thought for a moment and nodded.

He was a grown man; he wouldn't back down at the last minute.

"He's a very reliable young man, isn't he, Misumi!"

Dr. Toukairin looked at Aki Tomoya with appreciation.

She disliked delicate boys, and the new part-timer at the office was performing very well so far.

Misumi Mikoto nodded subtly, and at the same time turned to look at Aki Tomoya and kindly reminded him, "If you feel any discomfort, speak up immediately, and be careful, the bodies are dangerous, and so is the murder scene!"

This serious reminder was like a preemptive shot for him.

Director Kamikura Yasuo also began explaining the known situation at this time: "In Nishi-Musashino, someone found two large black plastic bags with bloodstains on the edge of a lake and reported it to the police. The police contacted us, saying it's a dismemberment case and they need our assistance."

Dismemberment case...

Aki Tomoya's eyelid twitched, and he started comforting himself.

This seems more than just a little exciting.

He rubbed his eyes, silently swallowed, and became slightly nervous.

Such a reaction was not surprising to others. After all, for a newcomer, this was truly more than just a little exciting, and the scene would only be more so.

"It's okay, Dr. Nakadō said that after a person dies, when cut open, they're just a pile of meat chunks. Just think of it as being cut open in advance..."

Aki Tomoya comforted himself in his heart.

And you know what, he did feel a bit better inside.

Afterward, they each put on their UDI work clothes. Following beside the two women from San Cheng Class, he also noticed how calm their expressions were; they were even able to chat about other things as they walked.

"It's a shame there's no Conan or Kindaichi in the real world, so we have to work hard."

Dr. Toukairin turned back and smiled at him.

Meanwhile, Misumi Mikoto beside her said in the same tone, "If it were Conan, people would die wherever he goes, that wouldn't be good, right?"

Influenced by them, Aki Tomoya also relaxed.

...

The lake area where the black plastic bag was found in Nishi-Musashino had already been cordoned off by the police.

A group of reporters had already been stopped outside.

The three people wearing UDI work clothes and work IDs hanging on their chests entered the scene under the guidance of the police.

"They're finally here! Hurry up and collect everything, then piece the body back together!"

The Detective Mori from Nishi-Musashino Police Station breathed a sigh of relief the moment he saw the UDI personnel arrive.

"They really like ordering people around. There's no Conan, but Detective Mori still exists!"

Dr. Toukairin complained.

The police were already responsible for the on-site investigation, while the dismembered body was to be taken over by UDI for reassembly and identification of the cause of death.

"Newcomer?"

Mauri Tadaharu looked curiously at the young man behind them who was examining the scene.

"Doesn't look very old."

"But despite his young age, he's a Tokyo University student, much more useful than a certain Detective."

"Hey, you're being too rude!"

Seeing them about to start bickering, Aki Tomoya couldn't help but wonder if the relationship between forensic doctors and police was really that bad.

However, now that he was at the scene, he didn't have time to think about anything else.

Putting on his mask and gloves, entering the scene, and following behind Misumi Mikoto and Dr. Toukairin, Aki Tomoya saw a shocking sight.

"Feeling uncomfortable? Nauseous? If so, you need to tell me."

Misumi Mikoto turned back and asked gently, her words slightly soothing the young man's emotions.
