Chapter 277 - Chapter 277: The Hunt Begins

The cavern was a place of stunned, horrified silence. The demonic portal, having served its purpose, had collapsed in on itself with a final, wet tearing sound, leaving behind only the scent of ozone and brimstone.

The hulking demon, Malek, stood alone at the bottom of the crater, a creature of immense power and undeniable antiquity, the undisputed master of the battlefield. The disciples of the Radiant Dawn were frozen, their morale shattered.

In the Koi Sanctuary, a pocket dimension of perfect tranquility, Khaos opened his eyes. They swirled with the ancient, predatory hunger. This demon's power was interesting, a novel challenge. The strongest he had sensed since coming into this world.

It had been too long since he had stretched his limbs against a worthy foe; his very shell ached for a true battle. His existence was defined by the strength, power and the domination of his enemies; this demon would be a fine test for both. With a thought, the core of his being reshaped itself to his human form and he exited the Koi Sanctuary.

Back in the cavern, a subtle ripple appeared in the air beside Li Yu. From this distortion, Khaos stepped out. As he emerged, two massive battle scythes, their blades forged from the nigh-indestructible, obsidian-like carapace of his previous form, materialized in the air behind him. They hummed with a latent, destructive power, eager for release.

The moment he appeared, a new, different kind of pressure descended upon the valley. It was not the righteous fury of the Radiant Dawn, nor was it the corrupting malevolence of the demon. It was a pressure that was older, purer, and in many ways, far more terrifying.

It was the absolute, predatory authority of a primordial apex predator, an ancient will that looked upon both righteousness and corruption with equal, dismissive indifference.

The Hegemony cultists, who had been roaring in triumph moments before, were now silent, their fanatical glee replaced by a reverent awe directed at the new arrival who had just appeared on the high ledge.

On the high ledge, Li Yu stood motionless, his agreement with Khaos echoing in his mind. He pulled Cyra back further into the shadows, his expression grim. "Stay here, no matter what," he commanded, his voice a low whisper. "This is about to become far more dangerous."

Cyra could only nod, her eyes wide with a fear she had not felt in a very long time, her own powerful senses telling her that the man who had just appeared was something beyond her comprehension.

Malek's triumphant laughter died in his throat. His burning eyes snapped towards the ledge, his senses screaming at him that a new, profound threat had just appeared. He saw Khaos standing there and for the first time since his rebirth, Malek felt a flicker of something other than contempt for an opponent.

Down below, a groan echoed from the cavern wall. Grand Elder Theron pushed himself to his feet, his body trembling with effort. Blood trickled from his lips into his long white beard, but his eyes, when he looked up, burned with an unyielding fire. He was injured, but he was a warrior to his core, and he would fight to his last breath. He saw the new figure on the ledge and his brow furrowed in confusion.

Ignoring the stunned gazes, Khaos took a single, deliberate step off the high ledge. He descended with a slow, regal grace, landing without a sound in the crater, a dozen yards from the hulking demon. He did not charge. Instead, he began to walk slowly, deliberately, closing the distance until he stood directly before Malek, staring up at a twelve-foot-tall monster. He tilted his head, a look of clinical, almost disdainful, curiosity on his face.

"So, this is the form you chose," Khaos said, his voice calm and laced with an ancient arrogance. "You gave up your true self for this? To become so ugly, and yet… still so weak." He then glanced over his shoulder at the injured Theron, who was staggering forward, readying himself for another impossible battle.

"And you," Khaos called out, his voice dripping with contempt, "you call yourself a Grand Elder? You couldn't even take a single blow from this malformed creature. Pathetically weak."

Malek's eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury. The insult, coming after the initial shock of Khaos's appearance, ignited his demonic rage. "You speak a lot for a dead man?!" he roared, his voice shaking the cavern. He threw his own massive, demonic fist to meet the challenger, intending to turn him into a fine, red mist.

Khaos didn't flinch. He drew his own fist back and threw a simple, direct punch.

Force met with force. The impact was a sharp, deafening CRACK, as if the very air itself had shattered. A perfect, hemispherical dome of pure, concussive force erupted from the point of impact. It was a silent, invisible wave of pure power that tore across the valley floor.

Seeing the shockwave erupt, Grand Elder Theron reacted instantly. Despite his injuries, he slammed his palm onto the ground. "Aegis of the Guardian!" A massive, translucent green dome of energy erupted from the ground, shielding the vast sections of prisoner cages from the devastating blast.

The dome groaned and cracked under the strain, and more blood trickled from Theron's lips, but it held. Khaos clearly did not care about the collateral damage, but he did.

At the same moment, Li Yu sprang into action. He leaped from the ledge, his form a blur as he descended into the chaos. He landed beside a massive stack of cages, ignoring the ongoing battle. He slammed his staff into the ground, and a wave of his own spiritual energy shot out, shattering the locks on a dozen cages at once. "Get clear! Run for the main tunnel!" he yelled to the terrified prisoners.

As a group of Hegemony cultists turned to stop him, seeing him as an easy target, he didn't hesitate. A volley of black abyssal javelins materialized and shot out, piercing them before they could even raise their weapons. He would save as many as he could while Khaos kept the demon busy.

He had been hesitating to act before, waiting to see what powers each side had but now that Li Yu decided to act, he would do what he could. He was a blur around the battle field, no one could stop him now as he worked to get these people out of the place. The main issue now was getting them out of the way of the fight.

In the center of it all, at the epicenter of the cataclysm, Khaos had not moved an inch. But Malek, the hulking demon, had been sent stumbling back a full ten steps, his massive feet cracking the stone floor with each impact before he finally regained his balance. He stood there, his arm trembling, his monstrous face a mask of pure, unadulterated shock.

Li Yu, paying attention to the fight, was stunned. He had seen Khaos fight before. He had seen his overwhelming, casual displays of power. But he had never, ever seen someone meet Khaos head-on. And he had certainly never seen someone match him, even for an instant.

The fact that the demon had not been instantly turned to dust by that punch was a terrifying testament to its power. For the first time since he had met the ancient, terrifying king in his soul, Li Yu was slightly worried about a fight Khaos was in. This was not a one-sided slaughter. This was a battle of relatively equal strength it seemed.

Khaos, meanwhile, was not worried at all. He looked at his fist, then at the stunned demon. An amused, almost delighted, expression spread across his face. Then, he broke out into a deep, roaring laughter. It was not a sound of mockery or contempt. It was a sound of pure, unadulterated joy, the sound of a predator who had spent an eternity hunting lesser creatures and had finally found a worthy hunt.

"YES!" Khaos boomed, his voice filled with a wild, ecstatic energy. "FINALLY! SOMEONE AROUND HERE THAT I CAN UNLEASH MYSELF AGAINST!"

The hulking demon, Malek, was stunned. He looked from his own trembling fist to the laughing man in dark robes. His mind, which had been filled with arrogance and contempt, was now a maelstrom of disbelief.

He had never been matched in a contest of raw, physical power, not even by any of the Grand Elders of the Southern Jade Continent, let alone here, in this backwater place. He had never met anyone that could, ever since he had shed his weak human form and been reborn into this vessel of demonic might.

And this man… he hadn't used any fancy techniques, no martial spirit, no weapon. It was just a punch. The raw, physical power of his body.

He quickly composed himself, the shock giving way to a new, different kind of fire. This was not an insect to be crushed. This was a challenger. A true opponent. He, too, had not used any of his demonic arts in that exchange.

He had met a simple punch with a simple punch. He had been testing the waters, and he had found not a puddle, but a bottomless ocean. A slow, savage grin spread across his own monstrous face, mirroring the joy he saw in his opponent.

They were both thinking the same thing. This was no longer a slaughter or a cleansing. This was a true battle, a chance to finally test the absolute limits of their own strength.
