Cherreads

Chapter 11 - First Gate

The sun peers in through my windows once more, illuminating my room in a beautiful warm glow, and I shoot out of my bed in excitement.

'It's time to rise and grind!'

I make a quick breakfast and immediately head out, hailing a taxi to bring me to the Gate I planned to enter.

On the way, I ask the driver stop at a grocery store and buy a week's worth of warm meals to store in my inventory, having learned in the car ride that it does keep things in the exact state they're put into my inventory in.

After the groceries, the driver takes me directly to my destination and drops me off with a quick 'Good luck out there, kid.'

Exiting the vehicle and thanking the driver, not failing to notice the lack of any real care or concern for my wellbeing in his eyes, I barely contain myself from sprinting towards the entrance.

Flashing my Awakened I.D. at the Guards excitedly, I'm allowed into the Gate Entrance, a building that had been created around this gate and served the purpose of both protecting citizens in the worst case of a monster escaping, and also allowing Awakened to gather, form parties, sell their loot, and more.

All around me, I hear shouts of people with all sorts of classes looking for parties to join or extra party members to team up with.

'Well, I'm more of a Solo Player, so I'm going alone. My class is pretty well rounded, and I have both my [Gamer's Constitution] and also [Well Fed] to rely on. Worst case scenario I book it out of the gate and camp here for a bit before heading back in.' I muse, heading directly towards the Gate.

I don't plan on going home until I either run out of supplies or I finish my quest, whichever comes first.

Given my stats, my skills, and the couple loose screws in my head, I think I'll be able to finish at least half of the quests within the first day.

I chuckle slightly, taking my first step into the swirling blue mass of mana, feeling my body lighten for a split second, a bright light blinding me momentarily, my mind quickly registering the sun as the culprit, and I find myself in an entirely different environment than I was before.

Glancing around, my eyes quickly adjust to the new lighting, and I take in the breathtaking sight of an entirely different dimension. I look around and see parties strategizing in the man-made rest area at the start.

The rest area itself is decently sized, with tents set up around, free to be used by any party that reserves them in advance, and for those with no reservations there's empty camping spots to set up tents and camping gear.

The parties in the rest area take turns watching out for stray monsters during the day and night, most Awakened here being low-leveled ones trying to make connections and generally be friendly with their peers, so there's a good atmosphere here in the rest camp.

Beyond the rest camp's wooden fence lied a vast expanse of fields, eventually shifting to forests as one got further. The fields in between are where I'll supposedly find my first targets, Gate Wolves and Fang Rats.

Passing through the camp, and taking my first step out, I breath in the fresh air of the wilderness, a smile etched onto my face as my eyes glint with fierce, almost feral excitement.

'I certainly don't consider myself a Battle Maniac type, so why is my blood pumping like this, why am I so thrilled for the hunt?' I wonder, quickly shoving the question to the back of my mind as I pull out my dagger and begin searching for my first target.

As I search, I remember to remove my allocated mana from the System so I can use it for combat.

Before long, my eyes lock onto a lone Gate Wolf in the distance. It hasn't spotted me yet, so using the opportunity, I cast [Fireball] 3 times in succession, before sprinting forward towards the monster.

I don't spend any time waiting for the smoke to clear, simply opting to dash through it and use [Mana Imbuement] on my leg, sending it hurling forward towards the wolf.

*Ding!*

[You have killed a level 2 Gate Wolf]

Mid swing, the notification resounds in my mind, informing me the wolf is dead, the information processing right as my kick connects with the corpse.

The charred remains of the monster hurl into the air with a beautiful arc, landing onto the ground a couple meters away from me.
