Chapter 2 - Idle Game System

[Welcome to the Idle Game System, Host. This system will have various functions that will assist you in your journey in the new world you find yourself in. Please explore it's functionalities and make use of it's abilities to the fullest.]

My eyes lit up in excitement, 'A System!'

"Status" I tried calling out.

[Name: Buford Presley]

[Level: 1]

[XP: 100/1000]

[Age: 15]

[Class: Unawakened] [-] [+]

[System: Idle Game System]

[Stamina: 5] [-] [+]

[Agility: 6] [-] [+]

[Strength: 5] [-] [+]

[Intelligence: 9] [-] [+]

[Wisdom: 10] [-] [+]

[System Note: The Host's stats are currently above average for his age, but mostly normal for an adult male. Most notably, Intelligence and Wisdom are higher than the average adult man. To give a comparison, a peak Athlete on Earth would be 10 in the respective field the athlete's sport is related to, I.E. a peak long-distance sprinter would have 10 Stamina and 10 Agility]

"Sick, 9 more fights like that and I'd level up? That's not bad." I muse to myself, before shifting my focus to the System Itself

[Idle Game System]

[This system will allow you to allocate resources of different kinds into your stats, skills, abilities, and more. The current resources are Energy and Mana, with a conversion rate of 100 resources per 1 related stat. Energy's related stats are Stamina and Strength, and Mana's related stats are Intelligence and Wisdom. The system also comes with and Inventory sub-space and a shop.]

[Energy: 1000]

[Mana: 1900]

'Hm, right now I think the obvious choice would be to invest my resources into the stats that give me more resources, so I'll do that'

Messing around with the windows, I allocate 500 Energy to Stamina, 500 Energy to Strength, 1000 Mana into Intelligence, and 900 Mana into Wisdom, prompting both timers to show up next to the stats with resources allocated, and a message from the system.

[System Note: The system's mana resource is shared with the host's innate Mana, meaning that if all of it is allocated, the source will effectively be depleted of mana, and will be unable to use any skills or abilities that require the usage of mana]

'Makes sense. This seems really fun though, I'm excited!' I decide to try to learn more about the world, letting the Idle Game System do it's work while I try to figure out where I am and learn a little more about the world I've found myself in.

Leaving the alleyway, I'm greeted by the familiar sight of towering buildings and the bustling life of the 20th century I'm used to, with the addition of what seems to be mana-fueled technology that's more advanced than what I had on Earth.

'Hmm, I don't know how this society works, so I don't know if I'll be able to work at 15, though I don't have any identification papers or proof of my age, so I don't know what I'll do...'

I continue walking around for a while before someone in a uniform calls out to me.

"Excuse me, young man?"

I turn around to face a brown haired woman who seemed to be in her late 30's, maybe early 40's, wearing a sleek black and gray suit with a pin with an insignia of a fortress seemingly protected by an eagle with it's wings spread out on her chest.

"Yes, Miss?" I ask, trying to stay respectful of the unknown woman. She seems friendly, sporting a slightly troubled expression, but I've lived long enough to know that looks can betray.

"Um, where are your parents?" She asks, seeming worried. I decide to probe for information before telling an unknown woman that I don't have any.

"Before I answer that, what's that symbol on your chest! It looks so cool!" I say, playing the part of a 15 year old, a slight plan forming in my mind if things go well.

The insignia is probably something well known I'd guess either government or large organization-related, given the respectful glances I've seen people shoot the woman since I turned around, and my lack of knowledge can be excused by playing the amnesia card.

So far so good, she seemed surprised at my response.

"You don't recognize it? This is the insignia the U.S. Government adopted after the Mana Apocalypse 10 years ago. You look 13 or 14, so your parents should have taught you about the history of the country before and after the M.A. hit already..."

'The U.S. Government, huh, that means that I'm in America, or at least this world's version of it. It's also possible my transmigration took me to the future of the world I was already in, though...'

Seeing me lost in thought the lady bore a more concerned expression and began speaking again.

"Did your parents not teach you? And can you answer where they are? Do you know?"

I'm wary of the woman, given her affiliation with the government, so I decide to treat carefully. The amnesia card could work, but it's risky, if they do DNA tests and find no relatives exist in this world I could end up in danger, I should get out of this situation and learn more before deciding whether I take that risk or not.

"Ohh! Right! Yeah, they told me about the insignia, I'd just never seen it in person so I wasn't sure! They're waiting for me at home, I just got a little caught up in my thoughts while walking, I should head home now, they must be worried."

I lie with practiced ease, watching the woman's expression shift from worry to understanding, both belief and relief written across her face.

"Well, if you ever end up lost while caught in your thoughts again, here's my card, my name is Julia Grace, give me a call and I can come give you a ride, this area is known for having the occasional loose monster, so be careful on your way home, your parents must be worried sick."

I bow my head slightly, grateful for the kindness, and accept her card.

"Thank you, Miss Grace. I'll be careful." I say, turning around.

Feeling her eyes still on me, I walk with purpose, pretending to know exactly where I'm going, before I turn a corner confidently and find myself out of her sight.

What greeted me when I turned the corner was an alleyway with an all-too-familiar sight.
