Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: I'm Here to Report Something

The classroom door was gently pushed open, and a female teacher with a neat ponytail walked in with steady steps.

"My name is Sae Chabashira. I'm the homeroom teacher for Class D, and I teach Japanese History."

Standing at the podium, Teacher Chabashira's sharp gaze swept across the room. "The opening ceremony will be held in an hour," she said concisely, her voice as crisp as her ponytail. "Also, this school uses a fixed class system. You all will be spending the next three years together."

Sae Chabashira casually flipped through the school handbook, her fingertip tapping on a key clause. "This is a boarding school, and leaving the campus without permission is strictly forbidden. Furthermore..." Her gaze suddenly became meaningful. "Starting today, you will be using the new 'S-Point System'."

At her signal, the students took out their newly issued student ID cards. After downloading a dedicated app and scanning a code, the screen showed a balance of 100,000 points.

"Points are automatically transferred on the first of every month. 1 point is equivalent to 1 yen," Teacher Chabashira said flatly. "Within this school, there is nothing that cannot be bought with points. Anything available on school grounds can be purchased."

The classroom immediately erupted in gasps of amazement. Students whispered to each other, their faces filled with disbelief—after all, receiving 100,000 yen out of thin air every month was a fantasy for a normal high school student.

Kiyomizu raised an eyebrow. This school was indeed different. It was the first time he'd heard of a school paying its students. What truly concerned him was Teacher Chabashira's meaningful phrase, "anything can be purchased."

(That kind of phrasing... sounds suspiciously like the setup for some kind of adult-rated game.)

Sae Chabashira's finger rapped heavily on the podium with a dull thud. The classroom fell silent instantly, all eyes on her.

"Listen up," her voice suddenly jumped an octave, her sharp gaze sweeping over the students who were excitedly discussing the points. "Everything at this school... is determined by merit."

She paused deliberately, watching the varied expressions of the students below: some were confused, others dismissive. "These points," Teacher Chabashira held up her own teacher's terminal, the screen flashing with numbers, "are the school's evaluation of you. Remember, acquiring points from others through any form of fraud or coercion is strictly prohibited."

Her tone turned frigid as she spoke the last few words.

Chabashira turned and briskly wrote a string of numbers on the blackboard, the chalk scratching crisply. She then added a social media account with a stylish flourish. "This is my contact information. Remember to add your names as a note." She paused, her fingertip tapping the board. "For daily matters, just send me a message. You can also find me in the office. If it's an emergency, you can call me directly."

The sound of key presses filled the classroom as students busily saved the information on their phones. Kiyomizu also unlocked his screen and saved the number. His finger hesitated over the LINE icon—in Japan, it was indeed the more common way to communicate. He tapped the screen, and the friend request was sent with a soft "ding."

Kiyomizu subconsciously looked up at the podium. Teacher Chabashira was leaning against the desk with her arms crossed, her wrists bare under her uniform cuffs. Her phone was clearly still resting quietly in a pocket somewhere.

His gaze grew pensive as Chabashira's words echoed in his mind—meritocracy, points as evaluation, the ability to buy anything on campus...

(Is the evaluation standard based on exam scores? What about sports? Club activities?)

More importantly, the cruel logic behind this point system began to surface: if points equaled evaluation, then they must fluctuate. They could increase, but they could also be taken away. In an extreme case, would reaching zero points mean expulsion?

This system of using points instead of cash for campus consumption did achieve a certain kind of fairness. Students from poor families would no longer be embarrassed by financial constraints, and those born with a silver spoon could no longer rely on family wealth for special treatment.

It seemed this school was much more interesting than he had imagined.

"Well then, I wish you all a wonderful school life."

The moment Sae Chabashira finished speaking, the sound of her high heels clicking on the floor faded into the distance. Before the murmuring in the classroom had fully died down, Kiyomizu was already up and out the door.

In the hallway, his footsteps quickly caught up to her slender figure. Just as he closed the distance to three steps away, Sae Chabashira suddenly stopped without turning around. "Question time is over."

Kiyomizu came to an abrupt halt. Question time? He carefully recalled the scene in the classroom—after explaining everything, the homeroom teacher had simply observed the students for a moment before briskly dismissing them. There had been no so-called question time. Was it intentional, or an oversight? It seemed she had no intention of volunteering any more information.

"Teacher," he narrowed his eyes slightly, "I'm not here to ask a question. I'm here to report something."

Only then did Sae Chabashira slowly turn around, a hint of surprise on her face. "What is it?"

"Actually..." Kiyomizu said with a serious expression, "After the interview last time, I accidentally overheard a conversation between two interviewers in the restroom. Because of Rokusuke Koenji's arrogant attitude, they deliberately lowered his intelligence and judgment scores, giving him a C-rank." He paused. "One of them even said, 'A conceited student like that belongs in Class D.'"

"...Why are you only bringing this up now?" Sae Chabashira paused for a moment, her sharp eyes scrutinizing him.

"Because I only found out today that he's my classmate," Kiyomizu's answer was flawless. When he first heard it, it was just a conversation between strangers, so there was no need to meddle. But now that it involved a classmate, the situation was different. The excuse perfectly fit the logic of a typical student.

"...I understand. I will report this to the school administration." Sae Chabashira nodded slightly.

Kiyomizu smoothly changed the subject. "By the way, does this school have a student council?"

"It does," Sae Chabashira replied calmly. "However, it's not easy for a first-year to join. You need the student council president's approval."

"What's the student council president's name? And which class is he in?" Kiyomizu asked, feigning casual curiosity.

Chabashira paused for half a second before answering: "Manabu Horikita... Third-Year Class A."
