Chapter 167: More Evil Than Evil, a Cruel Solution
As night fell, a few figures, reeking of filth, crawled out of the sewer.
The massive Orkins stood in the tunnel, watching as the Marines, each of them missing a limb, left the shelter they had been hiding in for so long. For the first time, a strange expression appeared on his ferocious face. His mouth moved a few times, but in the end, he only whispered, "You have to live… you… useless bastards…"
Roshio glanced at Leo and Barnaby. He knew that his order was, in effect, a death sentence for all of them. But sometimes, a life had to be sacrificed for something else. He gave them a nod and then quickly walked off in the direction of the temple. He was taking the most dangerous path for himself, intending to be the first to make contact and hopefully increase the others' chances of survival.
Barnaby and Leo also knew what he was doing. They exchanged a look, smiled, and then turned and ran. Leo only had one leg, but he was fast. All they hoped for was to find a Transponder Snail. Such a thing was most likely to be held by a local merchant guild, a newspaper office, or a gang.
Leo hopped toward the west street. He didn't even stop to think how he, with only one leg, could possibly persuade the wild and arrogant local gangs to help him. At this moment, he was just filled with a sense of mission. He hopped for two kilometers and finally arrived at a dirty, run-down street.
But the sight that met him made him freeze.
Under the moonlight, a slender man was standing in front of a group of unconscious or dead gang members, his hands still dripping with blood. He seemed to hear Leo's approach and turned his head. The silver moon cast a cold, bright light on his face.
It's him! The one who killed the Priest Satori!
Kaito Shirogane saw the one-legged Marine but ignored him. He turned back to the gang members he had just easily dispatched and smiled cruelly.
"Run, you insects. Run with all your strength. Before I kill you all, run off this island…"
Slice!
With a casual flick of his fingers, the force from his fingertip, like a sharp blade, instantly sliced open the throat of the man at his feet. Blood sprayed everywhere.
Seeing this, the other gang members' courage completely broke, and they began to flee in terror.
Kaito glanced at Leo again, then tapped his foot. His figure instantly became a blur. More blood sprayed, and screams of terror quickly ignited the entire district. In the distance, a large group of men, led by a Priest, began to converge on the area.
But Kaito had already moved across the rooftops to another street, disappearing into the shadows, his breathing and heartbeat completely silenced. He was now a ghost, walking in the unseen corners of the city. He looked at a tavern in the distance, still noisy even at this late hour. He knew this was likely the pirates' base.
Enel didn't care about these pirates. As long as they didn't openly defy him or speak ill of him behind his back, he was content to let them live like insects beneath his feet.
Kaito walked to the tavern door, listening to the boisterous shouts inside. His lips curled. He pushed the door open and looked at the men inside.
"Hey! Hey! Why are you all still drinking here?!" His voice was loud, making the carousing pirates freeze and look at the stranger.
A man in a loose white fur coat, a skull tattooed on his chest, was the first to turn. He frowned and put his hand on the cutlass on the bar.
But Kaito, as if he hadn't seen him, continued. "I heard there's a psycho killer on the loose in town! The gangs have already lost a dozen men!"
Hearing this, the others went back to their drinking. These pirates cared for no one but themselves.
"The gangs?"
"Haha! Just a bunch of punks!"
"If it weren't for that man, we would have taken care of them a long time ago…"
The group went back to their feasting.
But a blond-haired pirate, who had been passed out on the bar, slowly raised his head. The alcohol in his system had been burned away by a faint, but sharp, killing intent. He turned his head and saw that the man standing at the door was still dripping blood from his fingertips.
Bellamy's eyes instantly cleared. But Kaito had already closed the tavern door.
He suddenly tilted his head, looked at the blond pirate, and said, "Ten seconds. Give me ten seconds."
Bellamy opened his mouth, and his arm instantly turned into a spring, the air around it vibrating. But in the next instant, his vision went blank.
[Setsuna]!
SPLAT!
A black shadow flashed past him. A spray of blood hit him in the face. He turned his head and saw that his first mate, Sarquiss, now had a massive gash on his shoulder. The cutlass he had just placed on the bar was gone.
"Look out!" Bellamy finally shouted. But the sound of blades cutting through flesh had already become a continuous roar.
Slice-slice-slice-slice…
The series of slashes suddenly stopped.
Kaito's figure, which had been a blur, now solidified, as if many after-images had all merged back into his body. He exhaled a ragged breath, looked at the now-chipped and broken cutlass in his hand, and tossed it to the floor.
"Hah. So it only took three seconds…"
Because he couldn't make fine-tuned movements while in [Setsuna], he had simply grabbed the cutlass and spent a few seconds wildly swinging it in the center of the tavern. The entire room was now thick with the smell of blood. The bartender was on the floor, paralyzed with fear.
"AAGH!" he screamed, looking at his captain.
Bellamy "the Hyena," captain of the Bellamy Pirates, a man with a bounty of over 50 million Berries.
But Bellamy just stood up from the bar, his face cold. He had seen it clearly. This man's speed was close to the speed he himself could achieve after using his Spring-Spring Fruit to build up a massive amount of kinetic energy. And not just his speed. That killing intent… it wasn't something you could get just from killing a few men. Bellamy had killed plenty of people, and he took pleasure in hurting others. But this man, who had just walked in and started killing for no reason… he was on another level of dangerous.
"You bastard. Do you know what happens when you touch my crew…?"
Kaito had no interest in listening to him. "Shhh, Bellamy. Don't shout. I spent a whole ten seconds convincing myself to leave you alive."
He tapped his own forehead, his smile so wide it looked manic. "You probably don't know how much of a struggle ten seconds is for me." He wasn't lying. The decision to kill his own "master," Mercenary Tao, had also taken him a full ten seconds of thought. For a man who felt no guilt, no regret, ten seconds was a very, very long time.
He casually tossed a piece of gold onto the bar. "Now, I'm giving you two choices."
"First: take this gold, which I got from El Dorado. Run. Run back to Mock Town. Get out of this sea area. And tell everyone where El Dorado is…"
Hearing his increasingly manic tone, Bellamy's expression turned completely cold. He was now certain. This man was a complete and utter madman.
Bellamy swung his right arm down, and it instantly turned into a spring. He pulled it back, building up a massive amount of tension. "Go be crazy somewhere else!"
BAM!
The punch landed squarely on Kaito's chest, a solid, powerful blow.
BOOM!
Bellamy watched as the ground beneath his opponent's feet shattered. He looked up and saw a pair of eyes, filled with a cruel, mocking smile.
"So, you choose option number two."
BAM!
Bellamy raised his hands to block, but the fist was already on his chest.
CRASH!
The wall exploded, and Bellamy was sent flying out of the tavern.
Kaito walked out a few steps after him. "The second option, of course, is to stay on this island and become my prey, just like that other gang that wouldn't cooperate…"
Bellamy stood up. His body was incredibly durable. A fall like that hadn't seriously injured him. But he now realized just how powerful his opponent was. His own punch had had no effect at all. And this man's speed and strength were terrifying.
"Are you a Devil Fruit user too?!" he asked instinctively.
Kaito didn't answer. He just took a step forward, his breathing now free and unrestrained.
BOOM!
The ground shook. Kaito vanished, reappearing in front of Bellamy. He threw a punch, but this time, Bellamy reacted. He was used to using his own fruit to move at high speeds. He was surprisingly well-adapted to Kaito's [Fire Kata] footwork. He instantly bent his knees and leaped seven or eight meters into the air.
But Kaito's center of gravity flowed like mercury. He tapped the ground and shot up like an arrow, kicking Bellamy out of the sky.
BOOM!
"Wrong answer, Bellamy," Kaito said as he landed. "I thought you were a smart man. I thought you would take the chance to run back to Mock Town and contact your master, the Warlord of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo."
Bellamy, on the ground, heard this, and his expression changed. Kaito saw the change in his heartbeat and his breathing, and the mocking smile in his eyes deepened.
"I hear that 'Heavenly Yaksha' used to be a Celestial Dragon. He would definitely be interested in El Dorado… And you, Bellamy… you wouldn't lose Doflamingo's trust just because you were defeated by me…"
This made Bellamy's pupils contract. He suddenly remembered. He was allowed to fly Doflamingo's flag, but he was not allowed to lose. If he failed, his master would take everything away. In that moment, the pressure from the man in front of him, combined with his terror of Doflamingo, finally broke the fear of the "god" of this island. Perhaps… if enough of us try to escape at once, I really do have a chance…
"LOCK DOWN THE PORT! SOMEONE IS TRYING TO ESCAPE!"
At that exact moment, an alarm sounded. A large number of the God's Guard began to converge on the harbor.
Bellamy made his decision. He bent his knees and became a blur.
BOOM!
The tavern bar was shattered. The next moment, Bellamy shot out at an even faster speed. After a few more ricochets, he was gone.
Kaito calmly walked back into the tavern, to the side of Sarquiss, who, thanks to this world's incredible vitality, was not yet dead. He slowly crouched down.
"Sarquiss. Do you have a Transponder Snail?"
"Ugh…" Sarquiss was gasping, his strength fading from the massive blood loss.
Kaito's fingers slid over his face, finally coming to rest between his eyes. "Call someone. Anyone outside this island. I'll give you ten seconds."
Sarquiss's eyes were filled with despair. He knew that the moment he used a Transponder Snail, its radio waves would attract the attention of the terrifying monster on this island. But if he didn't… the man in front of him would kill him. The cold touch on his forehead felt like ice.
He slowly pulled a Transponder Snail from his fur coat. Kaito watched him make the call, and then, with a flash, he was gone.
A moment later, a dragon of blue-white lightning, roaring from the sky, swallowed the tavern whole.
