Chapter 164 - Chapter 164: High-Speed Regeneration

Chapter 164: High-Speed Regeneration

A blue drop card appeared. Kaito Shirogane swiped it into his inventory.

[You have obtained a Drop Card (Blue) x1]

It had all happened so fast. Orkins's outstretched hand was still frozen in mid-air. Old Hank was still wailing in the sewage, his shoulder impaled. Barnaby was still hesitating with his rifle. And the once-arrogant Priest, Satori, was now a corpse.

Cindy, who had fallen from his grasp, was caught by Kaito and dropped to the ground. The little girl finally came to her senses. "It was that bird-knight priest…"

She had just gone outside and had seen a vicious, giant bird. Before she could run, she had been caught by Satori. As he'd carried her down into the sewer, she had bitten him and shouted a warning. She hadn't expected that, in the blink of an eye, the big guy would have already defeated the terrifying priest.

"Big guy, you…" Cindy was now finally beginning to realize that the person she had rescued was no ordinary man.

Orkins's expression suddenly changed. He strode forward. "That bird-man is down! Which means he will definitely show up!" He grabbed Satori's corpse and started heading for the entrance. As he passed Kaito and Cindy, he muttered, "Little girl… you've done well these past days."

Leo and the others froze, understanding his intent. The one-legged Leo gritted his teeth and hopped forward, tumbling down from the clean passage into the sewage. "Orkins! Let me do it! You're still strong! You still have a chance…"

Barnaby, at Leo's side, also wanted to speak, but Leo held up a hand to stop him.

Kaito watched as these crippled plot characters fought over the "honor" of going on a suicide mission. He simply grabbed Orkins's clothes and yanked. The giant man stumbled back and fell into the sewage.

"Save your useless good intentions," Kaito said, his voice cold. "This era has no stage for you."

He picked up Satori's corpse himself and walked toward the tunnel exit. There was no way Kaito was going to hide in a sewer for the next ten days. When the second wave of Reincarnators arrived, his situation would be even more disadvantageous. This mission was a pure, bloody team battle. The newcomers wouldn't be his allies; they would just be another group of red-named enemy players.

These first ten days were the time the Nexus had given the weakest side to "seize the plot's momentum." He had to go out, understand the island's power structure, and maybe even find a way to bring in outside forces to maximize his own profit.

Orkins watched him go, his expression changing, but he said nothing more.

[Your actions have earned the recognition of the plot character Orkins. Your reputation with Orkins has increased. Current: Friendly (8/100)]

Kaito paid no attention to these plot characters, who were, in his eyes, useless. They likely held some plot clues that could lead to side quests and rewards, but against Enel and the other, stronger Reincarnator teams, he had no time to waste on such things.

As he reached the exit with the corpse, he heard hurried footsteps behind him. The little girl, Cindy, was tugging on his pant leg. "Big guy! I'm going with you!" Her eyes were full of a firm resolve.

At this age, Kaito thought, she probably doesn't even understand what death is. But he did need a guide who knew the local area. He nodded, and climbed up to the manhole.

The sound of frantic wing-beats was coming from nearby. It was Satori's giant, pink-spotted bird mount, [Fuza]. Kaito hurled Satori's corpse into the air. The body flew dozens of meters. The fat bird let out a piercing cry and flapped clumsily into the sky, trying to catch its master.

Kaito, in that moment, grabbed Cindy and, with a light leap, jumped out of the manhole. He kicked the cover back into place and even gave a whistle to the stupid bird in the sky.

Cindy clung to his clothes as they quickly disappeared around a corner. The members of the God's Guard, who had been drawn by the bird's cries, arrived only to see a single back vanishing into the marketplace. They heard someone shout, "It's terrible! Lord Satori is dead!"

Chaos immediately broke out. They tried to track Kaito, but it was impossible.

Kaito, carrying Cindy, moved with incredible speed. His senses were sharp; he could hear every conversation and footstep within a thousand meters. His brain was beginning to adapt to this flood of information. His Spirit attribute, now at the limit break, had greatly enhanced his processing power.

Cindy, nervous, pointed him down several streets until they finally reached a half-collapsed district. The houses here all had small courtyards, and the outer walls were made of a strange, glowing stone. It had clearly once been a wealthy area, before it had been destroyed by the aftershock of some attack.

Cindy stealthily led him into one of the courtyards. She expertly found a key hidden in a flowerpot and opened the door. "This used to be the security chief's house. Roro and I used to sneak in here to play. But now…" The little girl's mood drooped for a moment, but Kaito paid her no mind and walked inside.

The room was well-furnished. Kaito ran a hand over a table; there was no dust. He watched as Cindy habitually picked up a broom and began to sweep. He guessed that she wasn't as "young" as he'd thought. She was a child who had already learned to be nostalgic.

"Tell me, Petty Officer Cindy. Who are the famous guys in this country?"

Kaito was looking out a corner of the window. In the collapsed section of the street, he could see a number of massive, green leaves. They were so large that he had at first mistaken them for tarps. The wind didn't even stir them. He leaned out the window, but the view of the vine they were growing from was blocked by a mountain.

"Big guy, that's a forbidden zone!" Cindy warned. "Captain Coby said it's very dangerous there. If you get too close, you'll attract his attention…" She went back to her sweeping, her mind elsewhere.

"Famous guys…" she said, remembering his question. "On the east street, there are some guys who look like gorillas. There used to be a lot of them, but many have left in the last two years. On the west street, a lot of pirates are hiding. They all surrendered, so they weren't killed. Captain Orkins says two of them are pretty strong."

She counted on her fingers, but none of the information she gave was surprising. The only useful bit was about the "forbidden zone." If his guess was right, it was likely related to the city of gold or the giant beanstalk. But if getting close to it would attract Enel's attention, now was not the time to investigate.

The numbing sensation in his right arm was growing stronger. He suddenly clenched his fist. He could feel it. The charred skin began to flake off, and new, pink flesh was already growing underneath. He could feel his blood beginning to flow faster. He was losing some kind of energy, but in exchange, his arm was rapidly healing.

His Hamon began to flow again. Kaito flexed his fingers. His body was as good as new.

[Based on the lineage ability of Human - Perfect (Mythical, Myriad), you have activated the bloodline trait: High-Speed Regeneration.]

[High-Speed Regeneration (Scarce): A supernatural trait. Any injury can be rapidly regenerated by consuming blood and ki. Your body is not affected by damage to vital points.]

Cindy turned around, blinked, and realized she wasn't seeing things. The big guy's blackened right arm… had somehow healed. "Big guy! You can heal lightning injuries?!"

Kaito knew what she was thinking, but before he could speak, the little girl suddenly rushed forward and hugged his leg, great tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Petty Officer Cindy begs you! Please save Captain Coby!"

Kaito looked down at this tiny, doll-like creature, and for the first time, he felt a strange, special power radiating from her.
