Elias woke up to sunlight burning through Kenzie's blinds and a pounding headache that felt like it was personally trying to end him. For a few minutes, he lay still on the couch, watching dust dance in the air.
He groaned into the couch pillow, remembering the nonsense he spouted the other day. "I'm the worst kind of idiot."
Kenzie's fluffy white cat, Winston, stared at him judgmentally from the armchair. Elias sat up slowly, rubbing at his face. He hated that he'd made a scene about the thing with Cassian. Hated that he'd gone to Kenzie acting like some confused teenager. He was supposed to be surviving—no, more than that. He was supposed to be finding a way home.
How had he forgotten about that?
His mind flashed back to the day he woke up in this world; confused, terrified, and standing in the Bean 'N' Bark cafe.
The story wasn't real. None of this was real. So if he wanted to get out, maybe… maybe he had to help it end the way it was supposed to.
