Chapter 1 - Part 1-Chapter 1

Lorian gazed at his former bedroom, containing his belongings but now is a half-empty room with a few aesthetic decorations here and there. He walked over to a window near his bed and watched his parents as they excitedly placed his suitcases and a few boxes into the car.

All he could ponder was how things concluded like this after all the effort he put into convincing his parents that he didn't need to go to a boarding school filled with creatures he rather not associate with.

Lorian slammed the door shut as he entered the house in anger, the souls of the dead trailing behind him were frightened. Ezra, Lorian's cat came out of her hiding place in the kitchen to take in the unannounced chaos that made the atmosphere tense.

"Lorian, Lorian!" Lorian's mother called out as she came into the house. "This is the seventh school that's expelling you. Your father and I have told you countless times to control yourself."

Lorian entered the kitchen. His mother followed behind with his father who tiptoed along, afraid that even the littlest sounds would elevate the situation. "Are you even listening to me? Lorian, Sylas Cassio Shadowbane." Her voice boomed.

The souls shrieked and hid themselves. They are easily affected by strong emotions. "Caro, you're scaring the spirits," Marco, Lorian's father, says as he places a hand on his wife's shoulder.

"Maybe we should try listening to Lorian's side of the story first, yeah?" He whispered as he slowly looked into his wife's eyes, trying his best to calm the storm. She was reluctant but nodded.

"Good." He faced Lorian, who was now leaning on the kitchen counter with Ezra in his arms. Solemn attempting to detach himself from the argument.

He sighed and rolled his eyes "Why are you guys even mad? You had no doubt any school would ever want someone like me to stay. Everyone can tell there's something different about me, and I hate being around such unintelligent people who think they possess a molecule of power over me. I'd rather be homeschooled." He spoke coldly.

Marco was aware Lorian would remain implacable to the decision, but either way he spoke, "But figlio, you realize you won't be able to have friends if you are homeschooled-"

"I neither need nor want any friends, I'm doing just fine on my own, plus Ezra is a great companion," He softly strokes Ezra, earning a meow of agreement from her.

"Lorian, Ezra is a cat; she doesn't count, and you know there's nothing better than having someone that understands you, who will be by your side no matter what." He looked at a picture of his younger self and four other people around him. "Just like your Godmother and I." His gaze was back to Lorian.

"You won't understand Dad, you're nothing like me." Lorian scoffs.

"We are more alike than you think, figlio." He nodded to his wife. She took it as a hint to step in.

"You know your father and I were talking and we think maybe you just need a change of environment. A place where you can be you with no restrictions, a place where you can find others who are as different as you are."

She walks over to a drawer and brings out an aged frame. She smiles at it her fingers tracing out the image before lingering for a bit. She feels a wave of nostalgia.

She looks at her husband and back at Lorian "We've decided to enroll you into Eldrich Academy, a boarding school filled with various kinds of monsters and creatures beyond your expectations, even necromancers just like us."

"No. I'm not going." In a hurry, Lorian walks past them heading towards the stairs.

"Lorian, there is no school who's going to accept you after that little stunt you pulled and in the middle of the semester too," she says in frustration.

"It's not like I even wanted to go to school anyway after what happened five years ago." He goes up the stairs.

"Sylas, you are going there no matter what even if I'll have to drag you there myself!" She yells, "Marco, where did he get that kind of attitude from?" She says defeated as she rubs her eyebrows, stressed and tired.

Marco wrapped his hands around her waist and kissed her cheek "You can't deny it; he's just like you when you were a teenager." She gave him a look "Me? No way I was never like that."

He chuckled "Whatever you say, amore mio."

*Present day*

Lorian took one final glance at his room before walking out the door accepting his fate, and hardly ready for this terrifying new adventure but either way he had to face the music.

When he went outside his parents were already done placing everything inside the car, a huge grin on their faces. "You two, if you wanted to get rid of me so badly you could've just said so." Lorian grumbles.

"C'mon now, don't say that we're just ecstatic for you experience what me and your mother's school was like. Maybe make some new friends...or a..boyfriend or a girlfriend, perhaps?" He raises a brow in amusement.

Lorian just ignores him and gets into the car Ezra already comfortable on her seat right beside him, awaiting his entrance.

Lorian picks her up and places her on his laps and whispers "Guess this is it, Ezra." His parents got into the car; they check everything in case something was forgotten before hitting the road to the prestigious establishment of monsters.

"Okay we are almost there, you excited Lorian?" Lorian's father says as he looks into the rearview mirror, but Lorian didn't reply back. He was too busy entertaining himself in his thoughts while gazing at his reflection.

Their car passed through a barrier that protects the school being discovered by humans, and right after stood a very tall, large silver gate. At the other side, there stood two guards that would have looked like unordinary humans if not for the wings on their backs; they are harpies.

Lorian's father stops the car at the front of the gate and one of the harpies walked over to him "State your busy here please?" he firmly says.

"Oh a...hi, hi...um we're just dropping our son at the school, it's his first time here," Lorian's father gives him a bright smile.

The harpy turns his gaze towards Lorian's mother then to Lorian and stares at him for a good while Lorian stared right back surprised and fascinated by this winged man he only read about in books.

The harpy looks back at Marco "Necromancers, huh?" he stated out of boredom.

"Yup!" Lorian's father proclaimed. "Your acceptance letter please?"

Lorian's mother gives the letter to Marco who hands it to the guard. The guard checks it before giving it back to Lorian's father.

"William, open the gate!" The harpy orders.

The other harpy named William presses a button and the gate opened letting them through.

"Thank you and have a nice day!" Marco cheers.

"Yeah, whatever."

He drove pass the gate and onto a bridge before arriving at the front entrance of the school where other cars were parked and students were getting their belongings into the school or waving goodbye to their parents.

Lorian couldn't stop looking at all the different monsters walking about from water nymphs, elves, witches, vampires, shapeshifters, harpies, faeries, incubuses, espers and so on. There were so many of them Lorian didn't think even existed or even knew about.

Marco looked at Lorian and chuckled "Now you see why we think you'll love it here?"

Lorian looks at his father "Just because there are non-humans here doesn't mean I hate it any less, father." He tries his best to mask his excitement.

"Whatever you say son."

"Okay, Lorian go get your stuff out of the boot. We should make our way to the reception, get some paperwork done and your schedule with your room number." Lorian's mother says.

Lorian reluctantly got out of the car with Ezra leaping out of his lap to the ground. Lorian glances around and stared at the large and old fashioned but yet properly taken care of blue and silver Victorian structure except for three modern buildings with flat rooftops.

There was a water fountain in the form of a statue of a person, probably the founder of the school holding what seems like a big goldfish with water running out of its mouth. It was a very odd sight for Lorian.

He turns his gaze away from the strange water fountain. The school was surrounded by large trees; it was located in a forest. There were different varieties of flowers adding more beauty to the school.

Lorian carried his suitcases out of the boot. His parents, carrying some boxes and Ezra quietly following behind.

They made their way to the reception at the right side of the school near the main entrance. Lorian's parents spoke to the blonde-haired receptionist with two brown cat ears sticking out of. She wore a purple suit that complimented her bright yellow eyes.

"Here, his room number is 304. You can take the door over there," she points to a dark oak wood door behind her

"It leads to the dormitories. There is another set of doors at opposite sides, the right leads to the girls' dorms and the left to the boys'," she opens her desk drawer and brings out a key with the numbers 304 tagged on it.

"Room 300 starts from the third floor, there are a hundred rooms per floor, here's his schedule," she handed over

Lorian's class schedule to he's mother "a student will be assigned to give your son a tour later. That's all thank you." She politely says.

"Oh, no thank you." Lorian's father replies.

"Let's go Lorian."

They went through the door the reception lady said and made their way to the boys' dorms. They climbed a flight of stairs leading to the third floor before searching for room number 304.

They at last found the room after a few minutes of searching; it was a dark oak wood door just like the one they went through but it had the number 304 on it.

Lorian's father knocks on the door, but no one replied so he cautiously opens it to find the room empty.

The room walls are sapphire with two beds at the opposite sides of the room and nightstands beside them. The bed to the left was already made with two suitcases and a number of boxes around it, the flooring as well is dark oak wood. "Seemed like the founder most have really liked that type of wood." Lorian thinks to himself.

An ash curtain covered the window behind it. Next to the left bed was another door that led to the bathroom while to the right stood a large dresser, but this time it was made of red mangrove wood.

Lorian took the only free bed to the right. His parents placed his boxes around the bed with his suitcases. Ezra walked around the room, analyzing it in cause of any dangerous items.

"I think that should be all of it," Lorian's mother says in relief, she turns to a quiet Lorian going through his boxes checking if anything's missing.

"Lorian, the receptionist says someone will bring your uniform later and you'll have to go to the main hall in the evening, do you understand, Lorian? Lorian?"

"I really don't want to be here right now mom; can't I just go back home with you guys?" He pleads.

Lorian's mom sighs and glances at her husband for help "Figlio, we already agreed that if things don't turn out great for you here, we'll get a tutor to homeschool you, but your mother and I really think you'll like it here, okay?" Lorian's father reassures him.

"Fine, but I give it three months and trust me I'll be out of here." He glares at them.

"Is that supposed to be a promise? Under no circumstances should you get yourself into any trouble," Lorian's mother warns sternly "As a reassurance I'll be leaving Will with you."

Lorian groans "Please no, just leave Ezra with me instead."

"We can't, there's a no pets policy here so we can't leave Ezra with you."

"You have your phone, so try to call us as often as you can and we'll call to check up on you, ok?" Lorian's father says, he walks up to Lorian to embrace him in a hug.

Lorian's mother joins with Ezra purring on them "You know we love you, right?" She whispers.

"I know."

"Aren't you going to say it back?" Lorian's father pouts.

"Do I have to?" Lorian sighs.

"Well, of course." Lorian's father exclaims faking hurt.

"Fine, ti amo anche." He murmurs, a hint of sincerity in his voice. They let go "Ciao and don't forget to call, si?"

Lorian's father says as he picks up Ezra from the floor.

"Yes, dad I know and bye." They left the room and closed the door.

Lorian lays on his new bed, he stares at the ceiling and sighs "I guess this is my new life now, hopefully it won't turn out like the others."
