Chapter 51 - Chapter 51 Working Things Out

The changing room before the Northbridge match was filled with tension. Northbridge was known for its strict, almost stifling, defensive style. They didn't win by large margins, but they seldom lost. Coach Shaw's pre-match speech was short and direct. His gaze rested on his two disconnected forwards. "Northbridge won't give you anything. You have to earn every opportunity. If you don't play as one team today, they will tear you apart. Don't make me say 'I told you so."

On the field, the disconnect was painfully clear. The fluid partnership that had been Crestwood's greatest strength was gone, replaced by confusion. When Ethan had the ball, Callum either made a selfish run into a crowd of defenders or stood still, waiting for a pass to his feet. When Ethan chose a better option, Callum would throw his hands up in exaggerated frustration.

The Northbridge defense, well-trained and clever, easily contained them. They let Crestwood's attack implode on its own. Mason grew more frustrated in midfield, winning the ball with his usual intensity, only to see the next attack fizzle out due to a lack of teamwork. The first half ended without a score, but Crestwood looked outmatched.

Coach Shaw's halftime speech was explosive. "I see two teams out there!" he yelled, slamming his tactics board against the wall. "A defense and midfield playing for Crestwood, and a couple of players playing for themselves! Fix it, or I will."

The second half began, but the message didn't get through. The play remained disjointed. Northbridge sensed the discord and became bolder. In the 65th minute, they took advantage of a misplaced pass, launching a quick counter attack. Their striker finished calmly, putting them ahead 1-0. The shock of trailing, facing their first defeat of the season, rippled through the Crestwood players.

As time ran out, desperation set in. With five minutes remaining, Mason won a hard tackle and passed the ball to Ethan. He looked up and saw the familiar, frustrating scene. Callum was making a solo run, demanding the ball, despite being closely marked. To his left, the winger was racing into open space.

Ethan chose to play as a team. He ignored Callum and passed the ball to the winger, whose strong shot was expertly saved by the Northbridge keeper. The ball sailed into the air and came down just inside the penalty area.

It was chaotic. The rebound fell perfectly for Callum, but the angle was tight with two defenders closing in. He could try to be the hero. For a moment, Ethan saw him tense up, ready to shoot. But then, Callum hesitated. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Mason, who had continued his run, unmarked and charging toward the penalty spot.

In that moment, a decision was made. Instead of striking the ball, Callum made a simple, selfless pass to Mason. Mason met it with full force, driving the ball into the back of the net.

The celebration was pure relief. The team swarmed Mason, whose goal had saved them from loss. In the chaos, Callum didn't watch the goal; he looked straight at Ethan. There were no words, but in that shared glance, they silently acknowledged each other.

They had managed to secure a 1-1 draw. It wasn't a win, but as they walked off the pitch, the chilly barrier between the two friends had started to melt.
