In the morning, the caretaker opened the door, and Riley was happier than usual. She had already been delayed for her work. However, she also forgot to check on Jian, her best friend. Among all the bullies, Riley had a close friend named Jian. As Jian was prone to getting sick, Riley gave him special attention.
Riley went to Jian's bed. He looked pale than usual. Nobody in the orphanage used to approach him due to his illness. Jian had been waiting since yesterday for Riley. Upon seeing her happy and humming a song, Jian asked, "What happened? Why are you so happy? And why didn't you come to meet me yesterday?"
Riley answered while passing water and medicine to Jian, "Hey, Jian, you know what? I saw fairy lights last night. I'll definitely ask the fairy to cure you."
Silly her, she truly believed in fairies, Jian thought to himself. To avoid breaking her spirit, he pretended to believe and caressed her head, saying, "Alright."
Jian was much more mature than his peers—silent and distant. He had a twin brother whom he had lost, and now he was here in the orphanage. He had prayed a lot to angels, but the fairy had never been able to bring back his brother. So, he didn't believe in it. He missed his brother dearly and refused to talk to anyone. Due to his health, he usually stayed in bed.
The warden sometimes took out her anger on him because his health issues affected the orphanage's income. Both of them were caught up in unfortunate circumstances. Over time, Jian and Riley became close friends. Riley had also once promised Jian that one day she would find his brother. She believed that when she left the orphanage, her parents would help her find him.
After giving Jian some fruit, Riley left, humming her song and being happier than usual.
Ethan overheard their conversation and wondered how she could see the "magic light." He thought something was unusual about her, but he couldn't sense it. She smelled like a normal human—so how could she see his light? The magic was actually Ethan's contracted dragon, Sion. No one could sense his presence except Ethan.
Ethan was now absolutely worried. What if Riley told the whole orphanage that she had seen the light, the "fairy light" as she called it? Sion, the demon's strongest dragon, would surely be mad if he knew he had been mistaken for a "fairy." Ethan smirked and left.
Riley finished her chores and went to bed. It had been a day since she last saw the necklace her parents left her. Due to the day's tasks and fights, Riley was afraid that if she kept it nearby, she might lose it or make it dirty. Upon opening her secret box, she realized the necklace was gone. Tear after tear streamed down her face. "Where is the necklace?" she whispered.
She searched everywhere—every nook in the orphanage. It was night, and she was still looking in the woods, the garden, everywhere. Ethan noticed her but ignored her. She asked every maid, caretaker, the other kids, and even the warden, but couldn't find it anywhere.
With teary eyes, she sat near the garden, crying silently, praying, "Hey fairy, will you please find my necklace for me?" She looked around, but no light appeared. No fairy came.
Her sobs grew louder. Ethan, sitting on a tree branch at night, waiting for a message from his fellows, noticed her crying for the fairy light. She eventually fell asleep on the ground beneath the tree. Ethan couldn't help but help her, placing her gently in her bed without anyone noticing.
He wondered why he was doing this for a crying child, but something felt different within her. He felt a strange sense of calm when he was near her.
