Chapter 39 - 39

A command from the High Table?

Russell was stunned for a moment, then burst out laughing.

"Hahaha… A command from the High Table? Winston, you really have the nerve to say that?"

Hearing Russell's laughter, Winston knew things were starting to go south.

"Winston, I'm asking you very seriously now, and you'd better think carefully before answering."

"Are you threatening me?"

Russell's tone became extremely cold.

"No, that's not what I meant!"

"What I mean is, the client might go directly to the High Table to get you to take the job."

"Since you're not interested in the contract, I'll recommend someone else to the client."

Winston answered without hesitation.

"If you do that, that would be for the best."

"I've been quite satisfied with our cooperation over the past two years, and I hope we can continue to cooperate according to our initial agreement. What do you think?"

Russell's tone was no longer cold, and he spoke slowly.

"Of course!"

"You just got back, so I won't disturb your rest."

After saying that, Winston hung up the phone.

Russell frowned as he put down his phone, his good mood from just getting home completely gone.

He was now considering whether or not to abandon his identity as a direct assassin for the Continental Hotel.

In the past, being a direct assassin for the Continental Hotel had indeed brought him a lot of convenience.

But now, this identity brought more trouble than benefits.

Two years ago, the reason he chose to join the Continental Hotel after gaining some reputation in the assassin world was not only because the Continental Hotel could provide him with a lot of help, but also for a very important reason: the promise Winston made.

It was rumored that he was recognized by the Continental Hotel and became a direct assassin because of his outstanding strength.

But the truth was, Winston's promise was the main reason he joined the Continental Hotel.

Winston promised him that as long as he was willing to join the hotel, he could not only utilize the hotel's resources to the maximum extent but also maintain the greatest degree of freedom.

As long as he didn't openly violate the hotel's rules, he could enjoy all the rights of a direct hotel assassin.

It would be even better if he was willing to take on some internal hotel contracts when convenient.

The reason Winston offered such terms to attract him was simple!

Because he possessed supernatural abilities!

There were many assassins in New York, and quite a few people with supernatural abilities.

But there were only a few assassins with supernatural abilities.

Cross and Mr. X from the Fraternity could barely be considered assassins with supernatural abilities.

But compared to Russell's simple and brutal supernatural physique, abilities like curved bullet and adrenaline control seemed rather ordinary.

Winston recruiting Russell to join the Continental Hotel was ostensibly to enhance the hotel's strength.

But Russell knew that the reason Winston offered those terms to recruit him was mainly for himself.

Winston was currently the manager of the Continental Hotel in New York, which was already a high-ranking position in the assassin world.

But everyone had ambitions.

The position of a mere New York Continental Hotel manager could not satisfy Winston's ambition.

He wanted to secure a seat on the High Table.

Using conventional means, Winston wouldn't be able to get a seat on the High Table even if he worked until retirement.

Therefore, Winston could only consider using some unconventional means.

Russell was the unconventional means he chose.

Russell wasn't sure exactly how he would operate.

But if nothing unexpected happened, Winston would definitely leverage his strength and identity.

Although he knew Winston was up to something, Russell didn't say anything about it.

Just as he said earlier, he was quite satisfied with the cooperation over the past two years.

As long as Winston didn't go too far, he didn't mind Winston using internal contracts to hire him to eliminate certain people.

Other direct assassins might obediently carry out the hotel's internal contracts and the High Table's commands, but Russell had no such intention at all.

Whether it was an internal hotel contract or a command from the High Table.

He would only take the job if he was interested.

If he wasn't interested, he wouldn't take it even if the High Table's Adjudicator came in person.

At worst, they could just part ways, it was no big deal!

The High Table and the Continental Hotel seemed powerful, but they weren't that difficult to deal with if one really put their mind to it.

Let alone him, even his dog-loving former colleague who had gone home to get married could find a way to make the High Table and the Continental Hotel a mess if he was desperate.

Since his dog-loving former colleague, who was just a normal human, could do it, he certainly had no problem.

After thinking carefully, he decided to temporarily keep his identity as a direct hotel assassin.

Although he now had his own private channels and network, they were still quite inferior compared to the hotel's.

Since Winston hadn't openly turned hostile yet, continuing to cooperate was not out of the question.

After making his decision, he searched online for the latest news about Daredevil.

He was now a little curious about what Daredevil had done to make Kingpin specifically commission him to kill Daredevil.

Compared to the news about Tony, the news about Daredevil was significantly less.

Except for New York citizens, people from other places basically had no interest in Daredevil.

Popularity determined the quantity and timeliness of news reports.

As a superhero who basically only appeared at night and was active in Hell's Kitchen, the latest news about Daredevil was already from a week ago.

Similar to previous news, the latest news about Daredevil was that he had busted a certain gang and rescued a group of trafficked women.

The news was very short.

There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the entire case.

Russell scrolled back through other reports about Daredevil, but still found no issues. They were all common reports of superheroes fighting crime.

That's not right!

It wasn't like Daredevil had only been fighting crime in Hell's Kitchen for a day or two.

And it wasn't the first or second time Kingpin had wanted to kill Daredevil.

There had been many contracts to kill Daredevil before.

But the rewards for those contracts weren't high, basically only a few hundred thousand dollars or one or two million dollars.

If Daredevil hadn't completely enraged Kingpin, Kingpin would never have offered the hefty reward of fifty million dollars.

The news online didn't reveal any problems, so Russell logged onto the underground forum on the dark web and searched for information about Daredevil.

After searching for information about Daredevil on the dark web's underground forum, Russell finally understood why Kingpin was so determined to commission him to kill Daredevil.

Daredevil had broken into Kingpin's office in Fisk Tower, killed all the bodyguards around him, and severely injured Kingpin.
