CHAPTER 1

The quaint village Amosu struggled to thrive amidst limited resources, evident in its dilapidated infrastructure. Despite its financial challenges, the village boasted a primary school, a secondary school, and even a university – an uncommon find in such an impoverished community. A hospital stood within its border as well, albeit with rudimentary facilities

With university fees out of reach for most youths in Amosu, many resigned themselves to lives without higher education. As a result, the village's university attracted students from far and wide, all seeking better opportunities

Ekene, an 18-year-old native of Amosu, faced a difficult childhood marked by his parents' separation and his mother's abandonment when he was only eight. His father had disappeared after the separation, leaving Ekene without a stable family life. Taken in by his uncle, Ekene's school fees were covered until he completed high school. However, the steep university fees were beyond his uncle's means

Like many others, Ekene accepted his circumstances and concluded, "Maybe, this was how far I was meant to go,"

He decided to work as both a farmer and a hunter. During the day, he tended to his uncle's farm, growing cassava and maize. At night, he set out to hunt, though with limited success compared to his farming endeavors. The grueling routine left Ekene sleep-deprived and weary, but he persisted for two years

One evening, as Ekene prepared for another night of hunting, his childhood friend Grace burst into his compound

"Ekene!" She called, panting from exertion

"Who is pursuing you?" Ekene asked with concern

"Ekene, I came with big news," Grace replied

"What is it?" Ekene inquired

"Divine Gift University is offering scholarship opportunities for students to apply," Grace revealed, still catching her breath

Ekene's eyes widened with interest. "Are you serious?"

"Yes, I was on my way to the school to get my form. I thought you might be interested, so I decided to inform you," Grace explained

"Of course, I'm interested. Let's go together," Ekene replied eagerly

"Alright," Grace agreed with a nod

Ekene quickly secured his home and joined Grace on her way to Divine Gift University, the only university in Amosu village. Together, they purchased the scholarship form and as fate would have it, both Ekene and Grace were awarded the scholarships.
