Lucian walked toward Emily with slow, steady steps, his eyes fixed on her face. She quickly lowered her gaze to her files, pretending to reread the same page she had not even registered. Her heart pounded so loudly she feared he could hear it.
He stopped right beside her desk.
"Emily."
Just her name spoken softly made her shoulders stiffen.
"Hmm?" She lifted her head and forced a small smile. "Is something wrong?"
"Yes." His eyes narrowed, studying her closely. "With you."
Emily blinked quickly. "Me? I'm fine." She answered and lowered her gaze.
"Are you?" Lucian tilted his head slightly. "Because you don't look fine."
Her breath caught.
She should have known he'd notice. The man had the emotional sensitivity of a brick when it came to anything outside his circle.
But it is amazing how he could read the room when it came to her—every micro-expression, every shift in her tone, every heartbeat out of rhythm—he saw it instantly.
